ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
ONE OF HOUSTON'S MOST BELOVED RADIO BROADCASTERS IS GONE Paul Williams is one of if not the finest people that I know in radio or anywhere else. He and Sally stop by our table at the Houston Radio Reunion last year. Take their picture and we chat for a long time. So good to finally see them in person after so many email conversations since 2005. We chat by email almost every single day. Paul and Sally have reservations at the JRRR table at the recent Texas Radio Hall of Fame but never make it to the event. At least I do have a snapshot of them from last year's HRR. Paul is such a wonderful person, plus a fantastic radio communicator. In the Sizzlin' Sixties he is known as the Wild Child on KNUZ-1230. For years Paul is Senior Account Executive at Univision Radio here in Houston, TX. Paul Williams' radio history includes KGKB [Tyler, TX] 1956; KDOK-1330 [Tyler] 1958 - Tall Paul; KILE-1400 [Galveston, TX] 1960; KNUZ-1230/KQUE FM [Houston, TX] 1960-1973; KTRH-740/KLOL FM [Houston] 1973; KRBE FM [Houston] 1975; KILT-610/KILT FM [Houston] 1980; KODA-1010/KODA FM [Houston] 1983; KPRC-950 [Houston] 1987 and Univision Radio [Houston] 1992 to the present.

FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Subject: Paul Williams. Jim, I'm still in a state of shock. Paul Williams was one of the finest radio talents I've ever known. I'm so sorry he's gone. Another great loss to our group. He and Chet Hancock worked closely together in sales at KTRH, when I was doing news and talk there. He will be missed for sure. Frank Haley Albuquerque

JOE FORD (Houston-Shenandoah, TX) Subject: Paul Williams. Jim, I just got a call from Chuck Scott telling me Paul Williams died! Terrible news. Don't know any more at this time but maybe you can find out what's going on? Chuck had no other info. Perhaps Walt (Hammock) is the one to talk with. I called Arch (Yancey) and told him. I'll try Dave Ward and see if he knows. You know, Jim...I see Paul from time to time but really don't know much about his personal life. Chuck said they found him at his apartment. I knew he had Lupus and some heart trouble but that's the extent of my information. Very sad. Paul was a great guy and will be missed by all who knew him. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry. Joe Ford Voiceworks; Shenandoah, Texas
WALTER HAMMOCK (Houston, TX) Subject: Paul Williams Passed away today. I have no details other than that. Just that I am very sad at the passing of a wonderful man and radio legend in Houston. I really don't know any more that what you have in your email. I've heard the funeral service will be in Tyler and that they found him today...apparently some copy was missing and when Paul didn't answer someone went to look for him and found him dead. Sad day indeed.
CHUMBE SALINAS (Benavides, TX) Subject: Paul Williams. My condolences to the family and friends of Paul Williams. My friend for over 35 years. I loved him! May God bless his soul and may he rest in peace! Adios, mi amigo! Goodbye to the Wild Child! Until we meet again! Chumbe Salinas

ARCH & JANET YANCEY Subject: Paul Williams. Paul and Sally are very good friends of ours. We are greatly saddened at the news of his death. Back in the '60s Paul and Arch are roommates at Preston Villa Apartments. They are joined later by Dave Ward. To this day all three have remained good friends. We have many fond memories of Paul and Sally Williams. We send our sympathy to Sally and Paul's family and will keep them in our prayers.
JAN CASE (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: Paul Williams. I just can't get my head around the fact that now Paul is gone, too. He just came to my husband's (Ed Case's) Memorial Service on January 9th and looked fine! Soon the entire KTRH Sales staff will be in Heaven. Chet is gone, Max is gone, Ed is gone, have no idea where Dino is and Max Cohen is gone, too. They were surely a wonderful and unique group of individuals. I wonder if Max is having Sales Meetings up there?! An entire generation of Houston radio people is gone from us and we are all diminished by their passing.
CHET MAXWELL (San Antonio, TX) Hi Jim, Paul's death is a real shocker. I have met Paul, but I didn't know him well enough to make comments about him. I suggest Jerry Mueller (Miller). I think that they worked together at KNUZ. Each time one of our contemporaries passes on, it makes me realize that I am on borrowed time on this beautiful planet of ours. Give Lacy a hug for me. Chet
JERRY MILLER [Mueller] (Houston, TX) Subject: Paul Williams. In the late 60's while I was still DJ at KNUZ, Paul was there in Sales. We, my wife Maudie and I, would go to Paul and Sally's home and play board games, especially one game called Grand Prix. We had lots of good times together there... and Paul, Dave Ward and me at Stubby's for beer and shuffleboard! Geez, I had no idea Paul had any kind of health problem. What Happened?
TRIVIA ANSWER: In August, 2008 ABBA's Gold album rises to #1 on the UK album chart for the 5th time since its release in 1992. This makes it the oldest ever UK #1 album to return to the top of the chart 16 years after release.
LYNN WOOLLEY (Temple, TX) Jim, I am very saddened to read of the death of my friend Darryl Beeson. Darryl and I worked together at WFAA 570 a long time ago and had kept in touch. We talked on a somewhat regular basis and he was always trying to get me to come to DFW radio lunches that happen from time to time. He left me a voice mail a few weeks ago that I neglected to answer because I was too busy. I really wish I hadn't been that busy. Lynn Woolley, The Lynn Woolley Show (www.BeLogical.com)
IRISH BLESSING May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be ever at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face and the rain fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, may God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
