ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

BLUESMAN RECEIVES HONOR Legendary Houston blues musician, Lightnin' Sam Hopkins comes to life on March 15, 1912 in Centerville, TX. In the 1920s he moves to The Bayou City and lives here until his death at 69 on January 30, 1982. A statue of Lightnin' Hopkins stands in Crockett, but the only public marker that ties him to Houston is his headstone in Forest Park Cemetery. Houstonian Eric Davis visits Hopkins' grave with his daughter, but discovers his faded headstone covers with grass. To his astonishment Eric declares, This guy has done so much for the blues internationally and locally and regionally it was kind of sad for me to see that there's nothing in Houston to honor him. This leads Davis, who is a Lightnin' Hopkins fan for more than a decade, to form a campaign to fund a historical marker to honor the late Bluesman. In fall 2010, the Texas Historical Commission honors him with an historical marker at the corner of Dowling and Francis in the Third Ward. This is very appropriate because in the old days as he rides a city bus up and down Dowling Street Hopkins sings and plays his guitar to entertain riders. Soon Lightnin' Hopkins' place in Houston history is for the entire world to see and admire.

SUPER BOWL XLIV REIGNS SUPER IN RATINGS
Washington, D.C. struggles with 3 feet of snow. This slush fund of white frost may have a lot to do with Sunday's Super Bowl XLIV being the most watched TV show in television history with 106.5 million viewers. Our eyes glue to TV sets as Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints enter their first Super Bowl ever and defeat the lion-hearted Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts 33-17. The streets of the French quarter fill with jubilant fans. This surpasses the former most-watched TV program ever, M-A-S-H's show finale in 1983 with 105.9 million viewers.

TRAFFIC COPTER LANDS IN HIGHWAY Metro Networks fixed-wing aircraft that covers traffic for CBS Radio all-news KYW-1060 Philadelphia, PA quickly becomes its own breaking news tie-up on Monday, February 1, 2010. A low oil pressure indicator forces pilot Frank Bove to make a brave landing of his spacecraft in the middle of the New Jersey Turnpike. Neither Bove nor reporter Mike Lankford suffers injuries in the mishap.

RED JONES (Carrollton, GA) Subject: your columns. Enjoy reading your material although I don't know many of the people. 61 years in the business and still on the air. So many of the guys I worked with are gone. I'm 78 and still have a ball doing mornings on 50,000 watt WKNG in Georgia. Pull my own music (traditional country and bluegrass) and have complete control of my show. No management (been there done that) no meetings. 10AM and I'm on my way back home. New marriage and life is good. Red Jones, (KILT, WQXI, WFOM, Ga. radio Hall Of Fame, WKNG.) Anyone on the air longer?

CHERI FALCHETTI (Pittsburgh-Kittanning, PA) Hi Jim, This is going back to the 1960s. My Mother and I lived literally across the street from the radio station (KNUZ-1230) off of Chenevert. "Boot Eye Boot Boot" was literally the first word I could spell! (that's awful isn't it?) Anyway, I left Houston in '93, moved to Pennsylvania (north of Pittsburgh actually). Yes, weather shock as well as culture shock! But I do make the trip to Houston as often as I can. I'm the only one that escaped. I still have family in Texas. Cheri

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#775) February 08, 2010 [Monday] Jim: You are a great link in the chain of communications, so thanks for mentioning the sudden passing of a great radio talent in Paul Williams. The problem with leaving an area after working there several years, you lose contact with those men and women who helped make their radio station a success. It's unfortunate that we don't keep in touch with past associates as I always remember personal notes that Paul would send now and then. Had it not been for your JRRR, I would not have known about him and others with whom you keep us informed. Sally is a sweet lady and my condolences to her and all of Paul's family. We never know when the ultimate Station Manager, the Lord, will call us upstairs, but no doubt He has some clients he wants Paul to take care of. God be with you. Gary DeLaune

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio February 03, 2008 [Wednesday] Issue #773. Jimbo...may I echo several things in your February 3 issue? First, a sincere 'yo también' to Frank Haley's comments about Kenny Dowe...he was a great compadre during my Charlie & Harrigan daze at KLIF during the mid-60s, an unsung radio-guru who has the record to prove his broadcast moxie...and yes, I believe Gordon would agree, an heir-in-spirit to the Great One. Never had the pleasure of meeting Michael O'Shea, but have heard nothing but kewl things about him during his tenure after Ron Chapman and I went our separate ways from The Mighty 1190. Don Keyes is another one of those quiet heroes who made the McLendon national phenomenon the unique entity it was from the 50s through much of the 60s...as national program director, he was an able helmsman for Gordon for many years, sadly passing from the scene several years ago. Finally, the ending quote from the incomparable Tennessee Williams, "Life is partly what we make it, and partly what it is made by the friends we choose," is closely paralleled by Kurt Vonnegut in a salient statement he made in 1994 during a lecture series in San Angelo that I was privileged to hear...(when asked about the marriage of pessimism and hope in his novels)..."We don't know what good news is, or what bad news is. We only pretend to. We learn very early to echo the enthusiasm of those around us." Your 'radio-as-it-was pal,' Dan McCurdy, Sherman, Texas - KLIF, KBOX-Dallas; WMEX-Boston; 2004 Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee; advertising/PR freelance writer, voice talent

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Jim, Radio people are often over-wordy...no surprise that you have to cut down or edit some emails. Actually, I'm not watching TV now but I'm checking out a website. The son of one of my old regular WFAA MusicRadio listeners has created a website for 57 Nostalgia Place. When he was a young boy, he and his dad used to listen to the show. He says the show became the basis of his knowledge for pop, Rock’n’Roll, and old top 40 music. Address is
www.57nostalgiaplace.com if you ever have a chance to take a look. His dad taped the show almost every week. No telling what is likely to pop up. Best, Bud

TRIVIA ANSWER: Gladys Knight's Pips name comes from her manager/cousin James [Pip] Patten. Later on, Gladys mentions that it stands for Perfection In Performance.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Subject: Recent demise. Learned that we have lost two more from our music-biz: (1) The third of four original "Chi-Lites" has died. Robert Lester on 1/22/2010, leaving Marshall Thompson as sole survivor of this R/B group, known for hits, "Have You Seen Her" & "Oh Girl" from '71-72 era; & (2) Shirley Collie, born in Mo 1931 & died 1/27/2010. She was known for her country hit, "Dime A Dozen" in '61 & duets w/Warren Smith & Willie Nelson. She had been married to the late DJ, Biff Collie, of Houston & Long Beach as well as to Willie Nelson. BOB & Sonny Lee

WASHINGTON IRVING (1783-1859) Sweet is the memory of distant friends! Like the mellow rays of the departing sun, it falls tenderly, yet sadly, on the heart.
