ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

TV TEAM TOGETHER 20 YEARS There is much cause for celebration at WPXI TV CH11 in Pittsburgh, PA because their news anchors are a team for 20 years. In January 1990, Peggy Finnegan and David Johnson first begin as an anchor team on WPXI. In our current broadcasting atmosphere, it's highly unlikely for TV anchor teams to be together for five years much less two decades. Peggy and David anchor Channel 11's 90-minute news block at 5 pm weekdays. They are together locally as a TV news team for the longest time in Pittsburgh's TV history. Before Finnegan joins Channel 11 from a TV station in Syracuse, NY WPXI has a reputation as the local revolving-door TV station of the market. Peggy explains I never expected to be in Pittsburgh longer than five years, so in that respect, yes, I'm surprised that I'm here 20 years later. But I'm not surprised I'm with David. It's just such a natural fit. That part doesn't surprise me.

PALM SPRINGS RADIO SHUFFLE
The sale of two radio stations in Palm Springs causes a ripple effect on five local frequencies. On February 2, 2010 R&R Radio’s Classic Hits KDES FM (104.7) moves its programming to its newly acquired Beautiful Music KWXY FM (98.5). R&R buys KWXY FM for $7.5 Million as part of the sale of its KDES FM. KWXY’s Beautiful Music format replaces KPTR-1340's Progressive Talk. KPTR’s Progressive Talk ousts the former Conservative Talk/ESPN format on KGAM-1450. This is like a game of radio Russian roulette because it rearranges local radio talent, too. Next, RM Broadcasting’s Variety Hits KAJR FM (Jack FM 95.9) flips its mold to Soft AC as The Oasis 95.9.

TRIVIA QUESTION: What singer first performs the Flamingos 1959 smash I Only Have Eyes For You? The answer appears below.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Jim, When I was promoted to KLIF PD in ’70 I asked Ted (Agnew) to serve as news director. We were both there for the very unsettling period of ownership transfer from McLendon to Fairchild in ‘72. After seeing the futility of programming a legendary top forty station, now owned by a company that invented the Bazooka in WW2 and other war-machines in the Viet Nam era, I left Dallas for a new job as national program director for The Amaturo Stations in South Florida. I brought Ted with me as news director of WFTL, Ft. Lauderdale, where he did his magic for more years. I lost track of Ted a few years later when I went to PD WLW, Cincinnati. He was having health problems in the 70’s so my suspicions is that he’s not with us any longer, though I’ve never heard. What a unique talent. And how many unique talents we had at KLIF in those days! I was delighted to re-connect with one of them, Scott Hodges, at the 2008 TRHOF induction in Ft. Worth. Sincerely, Michael O’Shea, VP/GM Saga Communications, Bellingham, WA

MIKE SIMPSON (Dallas, TX) Greetings Jim! My first REAL job in radio news was when I was hired by Jack Shell and Ron Chapman as a member of "The Original Cast" at a new, upstart station called KVIL! Working with Hugh Lampman, I was the afternoon news guy 2-6 pm, then returned from midnight to 6 am, running the "A La Carte" system of manual-automation for Hugh's "second show" each day. After that I went on to work at WFAA radio "The BIG 57" handling news anchoring on weekends. From there on to KDSX in Sherman as news director, where I truly learned some skills and basics in reporting. After that a very brief stint at KIKN in Corpus, then on to Austin as morning news anchor at KVET. I had to change my name there to "Jay Douglas", since there was another Mike Simpson already working at KVET! I also served as the Capitol reporter for Associated Press' "Texas Sound", covering the House and Senate during the famous Sharpstown and stock fraud scandals involving high ranking state officials. Interesting times indeed! Thanks, Mike Simpson

JOE FORD
(Houston-Spring, TX) Jim, Just a quick note to say that the Memorial Service for Paul Williams was great. Very upbeat with wonderful stories from Dave (Ward) and Arch (Yancey), and some insightful tidbits from his daughter. I didn't have time to make the lunch afterwards but I'm sure the memories of this great guy were bountiful...especially after a couple of margaritas! RIP WPW! Joe

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) John Kinkade is an alleged broadcaster who said on yesterday's shows that the 50 million dollars that Wrestlemania is bringing into Atlanta was a hoax, because wrestling fans were on the low end of the spectrum and only 13% of them had college degrees, as opposed to about 60% of football fans. Now, what on earth that has to do with the price of tea in China, I have no idea. Kinkade is a goofy shock jock type that we have all come to loath. I sent in the following email and I stand behind it: "I heard what you had to say about wrestling fans. Nice, tough talk coming from a mouthpiece. My resume: 14 years in radio, including management at CCC. A degree in RTV with minor in journalism/science (chemistry physics). The minor was broad field due to the nature of my future studies. I have a total of 2 Bachelors degrees and a doctorate. I was board certified in pain management, disability analysis and forensics. I treated and evaluated over 10,000 people before my body gave out. I am 53, so all of that works to the advantage of a bully that wants to mistreat myself or my family. NOT. You talked about what a bunch of idiots wrestling fans were. Well, before I became a DC, I spent 2 years as a pro wrestler. The wrestling profession sends you that kind of money, you hold your hat in your hand, scooter. If you want to come to Texas to see what it is all about, I can get us a ring set up and see how long you can last with an old man. I am feeble and tired, so I ask that you do not hurt me too badly."
