ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

WE LOSE THE KNACK The lead singer of Power Pop Rock group The Knack, Doug Fieger, dies from cancer at 57 on Sunday, February 14, 2010. We remember Doug as he sings the 1979 major hit tune My Sharona that emerges during that dreaded disco heyday. My Sharona holds onto the #1 spot on Billboard's Pop chart for 6 weeks. In the midst of all of that disco clatter it really stands out as we proudly spin the tune on KULF-790 here in Houston, TX. In a 1994 interview, Doug tells The Associated Press that the inspiration for the song comes from his girlfriend of four years: I had never met a girl like her - ever. She induced madness. She was a very powerful presence. She had an insouciance that wouldn't quit. She was very self-assured. She also had an overpowering scent, and it drove me crazy. In 1978, Fieger forms The Knack in Los Angeles, CA. The group quickly becomes a staple amongst the Sunset Strip Rock clubs. A year later My Sharona dominates America's airwaves. In 1994, My Sharona re-enters Billboard's Pop chart when it releases as a single from the soundtrack of the Ben Stiller film Reality Bites. In 2005, My Sharona receives more attention when George W. Bush declares that he has the song on his presidential iPod. Doug battles cancer for six years. In 2006, he undergoes surgery to remove two tumors from his brain. Doug Fieger's survivors include his sister, Beth Falkenstein, and a brother, attorney Geoffrey Fieger of Southfield, MI. Geoffrey hits newspaper headlines when he represents Jack Kevorkian, who promotes assisted suicide. A memorial service in Los Angeles is in the planning stages for friends and family.

SINGER'S BUS CRASHES
Two passengers in a pickup truck die on Saturday morning, February 13, 2010 when their vehicle runs head-on into Country singer Trace Adkins' bus that carries members of his band. Trace is not on the bus at the time of the smashup. Cindy Chadwick of the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office in north Louisiana reports that five of Adkins' band members receive treatment for minor injuries from the accident. After he finds out about the crash Trace races to the scene. He says on his Web site This is a real tragedy. Two people have been killed and I don't even know their names. So out of respect for their families, I prefer not to comment too much at this time.

BOB MILLER (Detroit, MI) Subject: Knack lead singer Doug Fieger dies of cancer. Paul Egan / The Detroit News. Doug Fieger, who pursued his childhood dreams from suburban Detroit to a brief stint at the top of the pop music world with his band The Knack, died Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010, after a lengthy battle with cancer. Fieger, who wrote and sang lead vocals on the 1979 hit "My Sharona," was 57. Jim, Doug Fieger (The Knack) was Jeff Fieger’s brother as you probably already know. He's the guy that represented Dr. Kevorkian and is a big time lawyer around here. The snow isn't as bad as usual. I think you folks got slammed worse than we have, thanks to the jet stream going south. Bob Miller

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Subject: Snow. Lacy would do well up here. From what I read her breed (Akita) comes from a very cold area in Japan with mucho snow. However, I doubt that you would last.

Jim, It's still snowing here. Hasn't stopped (snowing) since about 3 this morning. I'm not going outside but it looks like there are about 6 or 7 inches on the deck now. Friend told me it is our biggest snow since 1964 or so. Hurry Spring! I'm cold with a T-shirt, heavy flannel shirt, and sweatshirt on. We're having power issues. Power is off and on. Time to put computer to bed. Good night. BB

MARY HELEN DOLAN (Houston. TX) Subject: Death Notice for DAVID "Paul" WILLIAMS Message: Just wanted to share this with you. I was shocked to hear the news. Please visit the Death Notice for DAVID "Paul" WILLIAMS.

BOB CROWLEY (DFW-Arlington, TX)
Subject: Denny Ezba. I saw the question about Denny Ezba. Unfortunately, Denny passed away in 2001. He suffered from brain cancer. I recall when I worked the evening shift at KMAC in the mid '70s, Augie Meyers had a show two nights a week. One night he showed me an album he was putting out on his 'Texas Re-cord' label, called 'Denny Ezba, Songs From 10,000 Years Ago'. Then he introduced me to Denny. We got to talking, and I invited him to perform live on my show. I thought it would be him and a guitar. He showed up with Augie's band! They set up around a single RCA ribbon mic, and played for about 45 minutes. It was spectacular. Frank Rodarte's saxophone was especially scintillating. Denny would back away from the mic, and Frank would put his horn right up under it. The balance was perfect, with the bass in one corner, the lead guitar in another, and the drums back against the wall. Good times. About 8 years later, when I was covering the acid spill in the Medina River, Denny called me to correct some information about Ph level. Seems he was teaching chemistry at St Phillips College by then. The last time we spoke was in 2000. He was friends with Stephen O Sellers and called TXN, where Steve and I were working at the time. Denny's style of music and the whole regional music business model were swept away when the Beatles landed in America. It's a pity, 'cause he was pretty good. Bob

MIKE SIMPSON (Dallas, TX) Greetings Jim! My final full-time job in radio brought me to KFJZ and the Texas State Network, where I was the afternoon drive news anchor for Mark "Markie-Baby" Stevens, who of course went on to be one-half of the famous Steven & Pruitt team. After that, I did a couple of "fill-ins" back at KVIL on Ron's show as part of the morning team, but my interests were already shifting to the engineering and technical side of radio. It didn't take long to figure out I could make lots more money SELLING the microphones than I could TALKING into one!. So I started a business called MIDCOM, Inc. in the mid-70's, handling all facets of broadcast equipment and services. At our peak just before 9/11 we had 13 employees and occupied a large facility in the Studios at Las Colinas soundstage complex. MIDCOM continues today, serving primarily as a remote broadcasting facilities provider, most recently completing 19 years handling all-things-technical for the Dallas Cowboys Radio Network. Other current clients include Sirius/XM satellite radio, ESPN, and Westwood One. Thanks, Mike Simpson

BILLY THORMAN (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#778) February 15, 2010 [Monday] Just a note to say, I'm glad you got a new pup. It's been so long, I had forgotten about it until I saw Lacy's name in your sign off and it brought about a warm feeling of happiness for you. Weather here has been cold and snowy. About 8-10 inches. The most snow in 37 years.

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Beach Boys specify on their concert contracts that sell-outs must be reported to all industry related newspapers and magazines.

MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Subject: JRRR 2/10/2010. I thought Barbra Streisand owned, "The Way We Were" until I heard Gladys Knight sing it. One of the best records of all time. Mike

LILY TOMLIN (September 1, 1939-p) I worry that the person who thought up Muzak may be thinking up something else.
