ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

ROCK 'N' ROLL PIONEER PERISHES Dale Hawkins' summer 1957 hit tune Suzy Q mesmerizes me the very first time that I hear it on The Mighty 1190 KLIF in my home town Dallas, TX. The guitar solo rumbles with an unforgettable wail. Later on I discover that it is 15 year old James Burton who is the fella who plays that fantastic guitar solo. Young Dale Hawkins records Suzy Q at the studios of 50,000 watt clear channel KWKH-1130 in Shreveport, LA. See legendary radio DJ Chuck Dunaway's email below for a surprise message about that incredible recording session. As we know James turns Ricky Nelson's late 1950s songs into memorable Classics. In the late 1960s, Burton joins Elvis Presley on some of his most Rocking tunes like Burning Love. The now legendary Leonard Chess buys Hawkins' recording of Suzy Q and signs him to a Chess records contract. Dale is the 3rd entertainer to appear on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. He is the 1st white artist to perform at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem and the Regal in Chicago. In the late 1950s, Hawkins' guest hosting of CBS TV's The Big Beat becomes permanent with a new title, The Dale Hawkins Show. RCA signs him to be A&R Director of its West Coast Division. Hawkins is a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. Delmar Allen Dale Hawkins comes to life in Goldmine, LA on August 22, 1936. In later years Dale receives a diagnosis of cancer. He passes away in Little Rock, AR on Saturday, February 13, 2010. Dale's mom, Estelle Taylor Phillips, and dad, Delmar Skipper Hawkins, precede him in death. Dale's survivors include his sons, Jeffrey and Jay Paul; brother, Jerry and wife, Pat, of Bossier City, LA; sister, Linda Snider and husband, Grady, of Alexandria, LA and his loyal companion, Flo Murdock. Dale has 3 grandchildren: Marshall, William and April. Dale Hawkins' memorial services are at 10:00 am Thursday, February 18, 2010 at the North Little Rock Funeral Home. His burial service follows in Riverside Cemetery in St. Paul AR. Renowned Tyler, TX record producer Robin Hood Brians talks with Hawkins 2 weeks ago. He says that Dale was at peace with his creator and ready to make the journey.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Good to hear from you Jim…"Here’s another ‘cottin-pickin’ hit!!" Yep, classic Major Bill. I can recall him with exactly those words. What you say about others making fun of Major Bill also hit home. I recall the same. But his down to earth approach was so refreshing, and let’s face it…he did produce some of the very biggest of the ‘62 to ‘66 era. I’m trying to recall the other record reps to "make the Monday-Tuesday" rounds. I mentioned Merlin Littlefield, Ernie Phillips and Ed Spacek. Ed was another not like the rest…coming from small town south. His sister Sissy was just getting started in acting in those days. He was so proud of her, and I recall would bring in photos and posters of her early "B" movies. Then one day I recall he actually brought Sissy in. She had a record out, might have been ’69 or ’70. She was so personable. That southern charm. I never heard what became of Ed, but Sissy went on to win multiple Oscars and is still playing Academy Award parts. Best wishes for health and happiness… Michael O’Shea

CHUCK DUNAWAY
(Houston, TX) Jim: I paid for Dale’s (Hawkins) session at KWKH...it cost me $50. James Burton, Stan Lewis’ nephew, did the session for nothing. I was in the studio when it (Suzy Q) was recorded and sat on a couple of boxes of newsprint. I had Dale signed to a contract and got Jerry Wexler and Atlantic interested in flying Burton and Dale to NY to re-record the tune. Stan Lewis knew Dale and I were both underage so he got Dale’s mother to sign a contract for Dale and Stan gave the tune to Chess records. He told me if the tune hit he would buy me a new Cadillac. Never saw the Cadillac but a black DJ in Shreveport named Washington wound up with a piece of the tune. Chuck

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Subject: Author seeks help. Jim, I received an email from David Browne, a contributing editor at Rolling Stone, and an author currently working on a book about the year 1970 in Rock & Roll. Perhaps your readers can help with his question about a meeting in October of 1970 at the White House. A group of radio executives were summoned to a meeting concerning drug references in music. Were any of your readers involved or do they know of someone that attended? David would appreciate an email at brownebag@gmail.com if anyone has information. I told David that the best place to start communicating with radio people is your newsletter and since I was a regular reader, I'd pass his message along. Thank you for anything you can do. Bud
