ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
ABBEY ROAD FOR SALE OR NOT FOR SALE THAT IS THE QUESTION The Beatles record most of their albums including their last LP at Abbey Road Studios in the wealthy northwest London suburb of St. John's Wood. Private equity operation Terra Firma Capital Partners buys the Beatles' music company EMI in 2007 but now it experiences financial difficulties. As an aid to its quicksand quagmire Terra Firma places Abbey Road's prestigious building on the market. Abbey Road Studios are a centerpiece of the UK recording industry since the 1930s. Abbey Road makes its name from composer Edward Elgar's classical recordings. It gains worldwide fame through the Beatles, who name one of their albums Abbey Road that has a prominent photo of the band as they cross a road outside the building on its cover. Britain's National Trust charity who safeguards many of the country's historic buildings considers whether it should step forward. Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, who is one of the UK music industry's most wealthy people with an estimated worth of £750 million ($1,150 million). His spokesman tells CNN that he may have an interest in a purchase of the famous building: He first recorded there in 1967 with Tim Rice. Andrew has since recorded most of his musicals there, from 'Jesus Christ Superstar' to his new musical 'Love Never Dies'. In 2009, the EMI group rejects an offer of $46 million for the studios. It now has a change of heart and removes the for sale sign from in front of Abbey Road Studios building. The EMI group says that it may benefit from a plan to revive the Abbey Road Studios. Only the Shadow knows for sure. Stay tuned to this Bat channel.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Subject: Really enjoyed the latest. Dear Jim, Always enjoy reading about the history of radio, but especially enjoyed your latest. By the way, KIXL call letters were used in Austin when my former boss Dick Oppenheimer began his first "group". I haven't asked Dick lately if the call letters are still in use in Austin, but I believe they are. KMGC began at the old KIXL building on Akard Street in Dallas before building the new station next to TM Productions and Programming. Both were part of Starr Broadcasting Group at that time. There was a huge collection of old broadcast equipment and records stored at that location when I was there. I would be very surprised if some of those things are not in the radio museum in Dallas now! I remember when KNUS became KLUV, KNUS was immediately snapped up by a station in Colorado. Good call letters remain good call letters, it seems. Surely there is still a KFOG in San Francisco! We're having thunderstorms and rain today after so much ice and snow here in Mena, but we're supposed to get more freezing temps beginning early next week. Hoping this finds you well, JC
KIXL call letters long time at 1040 move from Dallas to Del Valle, TX near Austin on 970 with a Religious format.
JOHN D. LEVAN (Springdale, AR) Subject: RIP Dale Hawkins. Hey Jim, Love your newsletter. Please put me on your email list. Thanks, John D. Levan - Rockabilly Hall of Fame (

JAY PENNINGTON (San Antonio-Boerne, TX) Subject: For the email section of your newsletter. Thanks! Hi Jim, I was reading that Augie Meyers is in need of a kidney...he is currently doing dialysis each night while he continues to perform. He is on the donor list for a kidney but in May he turns 70 and at 70 years old they take you off the donor list. So Augie is in a life race right now. From the article I read "Anyone interested in donating a kidney to Augie Meyers should call Diane Tarpey at San Antonio's Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital. The phone number is (210) 575-4483. There will be no financial cost for a donor. All expenses would be covered through Augie's insurance plan." The full article is in Sam Kindrick's online publication at www.actionmagsa.com/sites/default/files/issues/ActionMag-Feb2010_LO.pdf on page 3. Please pass the word along to help Augie and also please keep him in your prayers. (www.penningtontechnicalarts.com/KEXL)

LARRY SCOTT [Dallas-Terrell, TX] Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#780) February 19, 2010 [Friday] I always look forward to the report. I remember someone asking if anyone knew a Mr. Laird. He was a car dealer in Houston and sponsored Tilman Franks, Country Johnny Mathis and Jimmy Fautheree on radio. He bought them white suits to wear on personal appearances. When Hank Williams came to KWKH he didn't have a suit so Tilman had his suit altered to fit Hank and that's the suit Hank wore in his early promo pictures. By the way, Tilman wrote "Poison Love" that Johnny and Jack recorded. As a way to say thanks to Mr. Laird he put Laird's name on the song.
MIKE SIMPSON (Dallas, TX) Greetings Jim! This 16 year old kid who once blissfully stood in the middle of shootings and mayhem like a deer-in-the-headlights, driving Sam Pate's mobile unit on the weekend...well this "kid" turns 60 in a couple of months. This "kid" (and I still AM a kid in my own mind!) has managed to make a decent living "doing radio" for more than 40 years. I suppose some day I need to "grow up" and get a REAL job!!! By the way, after re-reading the above I realized I left out an important item well worth mentioning: I was honored to be able to visit with the late Sam Pate, apparently only a few weeks before his death. It was at one of Mike Shannon's "DFW Radio Lunch" gatherings. I'm not sure Sam had any idea who I was, but I expressed my sincere thanks and appreciation to him for getting me started in this crazy business. It's been a wonderful ride! Who would have ever guessed a 16 year old high school dropout could have ever been so privileged and blessed to be included... Sorry for the length of the above...but your newsletter took me back into a great past. I look forward to reading every word in the future. Thanks, Mike Simpson
