ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
FIRE NEXT DOOR! Lacy and I have a fire last night in the apartment next door to ours. Firefighters force us out of our apartment around midnight Thursday morning. Appears that just about every Houston fire truck, emergency vehicle and fire crew work to put out the blaze in the apartment next door to ours. While outside I nearly freeze my rear off because it's now colder that it is for quite awhile. Lacy keeps howling woooo at all of the firemen as they race back and forth in front of us plus their bright lights, big hoses and several ladders. They let us back inside our home around 5 this morning. No electricity until around 1:40 pm Thursday afternoon. Try to wrap up in as much cover as possible because it's mighty cold inside with no heat. The heat now works overtime to warm us up. Our apartment smells like the fire is still burning. Guess that smell will be here for a long time. They're moving out the furniture next door right now. Thank God that we have no injuries but firemen dig holes in the roof next door to get to the electrical fire. A TV camera man stands outside in front of us as he films the fire fighters in action. Andy Waldrop says that he sees the video footage on TV this morning. Probably won't make the news in Dallas but it's big news to us.

JOHN SUMMERS (Los Angeles, TX) Subject: inquiry--Summers in L.A. Greetings from the Left Coast Jim! I'm looking for a hi-quality Beautiful Music/Easy Listening/MOR library...mixed instrumentals & vocals would be terrific. Really appreciate getting your updates. Adios from a former KLIF & KCLE jock. John Summers Los Angeles (661) 310-4483
jsummers93khj@hotmail.comRED JONES (Carrollton, GA) Subject: Bob Grant E mail. Bob Grant was asking about John Trotter. John worked a number of stations around the country. I first worked briefly with him at KAKC Tulsa as I was coming out of the Army where Chris Lane was also on the staff. When I was PD at KILT Houston I hired him as morning man and gave him the Honest John moniker. Great talent. Then he worked at KRIO McAllen, Texas for awhile then moved to Abilene, Texas where he passed away. Sad loss. Red Jones

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: re news. On this snowy day, cold outside but cozy inside, I enjoyed your email from Mike Simpson. It makes me feel proud my brother has a swell guy like Mike to remind me Sam has not been forgotten. Knowing Sam, I am sure he remembered you Mike. And having ridden with him in the mobile, I bet you held on real tight to the dash board when he made those u-turns to get that story. Sam's grandson Mack, about 10 years I guess, made the front page cover of a Dallas magazine. On the last anniversary of Kennedy's death, his mom took him downtown to the Memorial. Every time the guide would start to tell the events of that day, Mack would correct him and say "here's how it really happened." A reporter noticing Mack asked where he got the information. "My grandpa told me."

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: New Entry at Jim Rose Remembers Radio ...leave it to my colleague Bud Buschardt to bring those memories rolling back like so many neat little nuggets from the past! He mentioned Abnack Records and their Dallas office on Olive Street, with John Abdnor, a Ft. Worth insurance exec as head honcho, and his son John Jr. as contact guy. The Abdnors were really unsung groundbreakers during the '63-'65 musical frenzy in Dallas. KLIF was, as usual, at the epicenter of the action, and both Johns were regular visitors at Triangle Point, pushing their 'records du jour' to the DJs and the then current music director. One of the biggest successes they had was 'Western Union Man' by the Five Americans, ultimately taking the local group to Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand,' nationally broadcast from WFIL-TV in Philadelphia. Another lesser regional hottie of Abnak was Jon & Robin's 'Do It Again' (with a rather rakish after-title for the time) 'A Little Bit Slower.' I remember both John Sr. and his son as really nice guys, no pressure, easy sell, fun folks...unlike many record hawkers of the day. Dan McCurdy, Sherman, Texas - KLIF, KBOX-Dallas; WMEX-Boston; inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2004; retired Fortune 500 advertising/PR exec; freelance writer, voice talent
TRIVIA ANSWER: Legendary record producer Shelby Singleton does not want Lesley Gore to record any song that contains the word groovy.
MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: For JRRR! Hi Jim and Lacy! First, thanks to Mike Simpson for the mention in the last JRRR. Always a lot of fun at our quarterly DFW Radio Lunch Bunch events, and you never know who might show up! Sam Pate was an absolute gem, we were blessed with his presence, and he is sorely missed. Next Lunch Bunch is coming up in March...I'll send you details to post. Also, Joyce Webster wrote you about the old KIXL in Dallas...for one, I wish we DID have a repository for old broadcast equipment in Dallas. Once upon a time, we had the Texas Broadcast Museum, which later moved across town and became the National Museum of Communications. It's been gone for at least 10 years now, and the contents are rumored to be sitting in a public storage warehouse in nearby Irving, gathering dust. One of the broadcasting "finds" once contained there was the original, massive Voice of America console. I do have my own little radio repository at the house (what radio person doesn't?) and part of that collection is the original green metal building sign from KIXL Radio, originally located at 1401 S. Akard in Dallas. Kind of a long story, but it's out of the elements now and waiting for a permanent home one day in a SOLVENT and PERPETUALLY-FUNDED local broadcast museum! Thanks, Mike Shannon
MIKE SHEPPARD [Veteran radio DJ] My heart ... will always beat just a little faster when the word radio is spoken.
