ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

BOSS RADIO INNOVATER PERISHES In 1965, Gene Chanault teams with legendary programmer Bill Drake to create powerhouse Boss Radio on KHJ-930 in Los Angeles, CA. The Drake-Chenault format takes Top 40 radio by a storm in the 1960s with DJ liners and special jingles. In 1974, Drake and Chanault launch a music automation company that distributes radio programming via reel-to-reel tape. Chenault takes care of the business end of the company. Drake produces the music programming. Eventually, Drake-Chenault distributes their formats by satellite. In 1986 Wagontrain Enterprises buys Drake Chenault. In the summer of 1987, Wagontrain re-locates the operation to Albuquerque, NM. Another radio legend, Robert W. Morgan, hosts Drake-Chenault's syndicated radio specials The Top 100 of the Sixties and The Golden Years. Both programs document the history of Pop music. The Golden Years covers 1956-1972. We probably remember most the 52-hour special, The History of Rock & Roll, that chronicles the course of Rock music from its beginning roots. Bill Drake dies in November 2008 of lung cancer. Gene Chenault dies at 90 on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 of lymphoma complications.

CARLY REVEALS WHO IS VAIN
We fondly remember singer-song writer Carly Simon's 1973 hit You're So Vain that is #1 for three weeks and sells over a half million copies. Carly never reveals who the vain person is. Over the years the most prominent person in that role is Mick Jaggar of the Rolling Stones. Mick does sing back up on the tune. Another leading contender for the vain title in her song is Warren Beatty. Warren takes the ball and runs with it because in interviews he proclaims that the song is about him. Beatty even thanks Carly for the vain nomenclature because he is so vain, but it isn’t about him at all. In the new recording of You’re So Vain from her new album due out this week, Never Been Gone, Carly Simon ends the a 38-year mystery that surrounds the subject of her classic song. She reveals that the one-time head of her record label, David Geffen, is the one who is so vain in her song. At the time Simon argues with Geffen who she claims spends most of his time promoting his other act Joni Mitchell and not her. This revelation leaves NBC's Dick Ebersol in a quandary because in 2003 he bids $50,000 for Carly to tell him personally who the vain person in the song really is. He promises to take the secret to his grave. Now we all know.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Subject: The fire, etc. Dear Jim, Sorry to hear about the fire and the discomfort. Thank God you and Lacy are safe, and I take it you didn't lose anything. The smell of a fire is difficult to get rid of but if you didn't have smoke damage, it will go away.

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego-San Marcos, CA) Hi Jim, fires are scary. I'm sure u and Lacy were put thru a little hell the other nite during the fire even though it was cold outside. I hope things worked out for you. Been reading about a lot of good people passing on. God and Peace be with them. Please take care of yourself. Keep up the good work. Beware of a fire prone apartment building. CC

CHAD EVERSON (Princeton, MN) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#783) February 26, 2010 [Friday]. Fire is bad! I am glad both you and Lacy are fine! Chad Everson; President, Theodore Media LLC (

ROBERT REYES [BOBBY] (San Antonio, TX)
Subject: glad you're ok. Jim...am so glad you and Lacy are OK! I'd hate to think if I would ever have a situation like that (fire next door) with my condition...thank GOD things were not more damaging on your side and you were able to get back to your place...tell Andy Waldrop I said HEY! ...thanks for placing the info from Jay Pennington about Augie Meyers in your newsletter...when I saw Augie last summer at the Harvey Kagan benefit, I chatted with Augie briefly about if Post Polio Syndrome had affected him and he said along with that and the kidney problems were giving him discomfort! ...we've all got to keep the faith! ...all the best to you and Lacy, Jim, and keep the newsletter going for us and have a good weekend!! Bobby Reyes

CHET MAXWELL (San Antonio, TX) Subject: John Trotter. Hi Jim, I would like to add one short item to Red Jones' note about John Trotter. Between the times that John worked with Charlie Trub at KRIO in McAllen and his stint in Abilene, John spent a while working with us at KBOX in Dallas. He was one of a kind...a tremendous talent even in his later years. I'm glad that you and Lacy escaped from your harrowing experience with that apartment fire without injury.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Safety First. Hi, I am glad you are safe. I used to remember seeing the KIXL transmitter at Military Parkway behind Hancock Fabric. I used to walk down to see it. It was right before the dry area of town was wet. The other transmitter sites visible in the area was KLIF 1190 towers near Scyene across from Colonial Baptist Church. I am not sure whether those were ever used. Also when I went to John B. Hood, KSKY 660 could be heard over the phone at times. They had their transmitter at Jim Miller and Bruton. I also used to see towers off of the Dallas/Fort Worth Turnpike. I am not sure who they were operated by, I was thinking it was KFJZ 1270 but I maybe wrong. I have a copy of Mr. Bus Driver, Bruce Channel. I figured it was a response to the Letter. Couldn't catch a plane so had to hop a bus. Maybe the Next Plane To London. Junior's head is hard as rock every dime is off to the Jukebox Man. There was a Pawnshop at Oaklawn and Lemmon Ave. He had lots of 45's that he got from old jukeboxes.

FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: Hi Jim. Very sorry to hear of the fire Jim. I hope you and Lacy will not be forced to move once they start rebuilding the apt. next door. Very glad that the two of you are safe and sound. It was good to see Mike Simpson on here, I had not spoken to him since we went chasing down a pirate radio station up near Ponder. His email stopped working with a change in the Cowboy broadcast changed stations. Another Ham radio guy like me. Maybe we can connect again soon. Mike Shannon, if you'll accept an old radio guy who never worked Dallas radio but grew up in the glory days of Dallas radio, I'd like to come to one of the lunch get togethers. Always enjoy the column, Jim. Bob Tomlinson+

BLAKE LINDSAY (Dallas-Addison, TX) Hi Jim! Jennifer and I are sure happy that you and Lacy are both safe and injury free. That apartment fire next door certainly sounds like it was an adventure for you. Just punchin' in again Jim, to tell you how much we appreciate your three informative weekly columns. Thanks for your caring efforts with a subject we are very interested in. Thanks also, for including your current life stories in the news for us. I observed this week, the big boost news talk stations received in Arbitron ratings. Healthcare debate and other issues are impacting the numbers. Those PPM's seem quicker and more precise to deliver reality just like we expected. Talk with you soon Jim. Your Friends, Blake and Jennifer Lindsay, Blazin' Blake Productions
