T-BONE DEPARTS A bass player whom we know best for his work with Rock duo Hall and Oates dies at 58 from a heart attack on Saturday, February 27, 2010. Over the years, Tom T-Bone Wolk is a regular in the Saturday Night Live band plus he plays bass for the likes of Billy Joel, Carly Simon, Bette Midler, Laurie Anderson, Robert Palmer, Elvis Costello and Shawn Colvin. T-Bone produces the 1991 Willie Nile album Places I Have Never Been. Recently, Wolk appears online as the bass player in Daryl Hall’s Live From Daryl’s House show. Since 1981, Wolk is the fella with the hat who plays bass guitar with Daryl Hall and John Oates. He originally got the gig after playing bass on the first gold rap record, 'These Are The Breaks' by Kurtis Blow in early 1981. This gave him the chance to audition for the Hall and Oates band; now 23 years later he is the resident musical director and often times co-producer of their records.

THE 82ND ANNUAL ACADEMY AWARDS is on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, CA. 2010’s most nominated films are Avatar and The Hurt Locker with nine nominations each. Country-crooner actors maintain a good track record at the Academy Awards. Jeff Bridges stands a good chance to join the winning crowd with his starring role in Crazy Heart. A movie where he plays boozy singer Bad Blake, a guy who shows his years along with the mileage but he still puts a lot of soul in his music. Jeff has previous wins at the Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild Awards. He is the best-actor front-runner for Crazy Heart. Six past performers who play Country singers receive nominations for Oscars. Three of them win: Sissy Spacek for best actress as Loretta Lynn in 1980's Coal Miner's Daughter; Robert Duvall who co-stars in Crazy Heart for best actor as fictional singer Mac Sledge in 1983's Tender Mercies (one of my favorite movies) and Reese Witherspoon for best actress as June Carter in 2005's Walk the Line about the life and legend of Johnny Cash. Joaquin Phoenix star of Walk the Line receives a nomination for best actor for his role as Johnny Cash, but he doesn't go home with the trophy. Same for Jessica Lange with her nomination for best actress as Patsy Cline in 1985's Sweet Dreams (another of my favorite flicks). Movies with a Country flavor have a .500 batting average. Country music has a better track record than other music genres at the Oscars. Here's hoping that Jeff Bridges wins a new Oscar for Crazy Heart.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What is the inspiration for former Beatle Paul McCartney's tune Good Day Sunshine? The answer appears below.

PAT MCGOWAN (Chandler, AZ) Subject: George Lester. Hello Jim, Enjoy your updates. Been a LONG time since my Houston days ('67-'74) but interesting to see what's happening. Years ago was a neighbor and friend of George Lester (KIKK, KENR, KTRH, etc.) Years later established an email "stay in touch". Have not heard from GL in well over a year, and am wondering if he is OK and still with us. Any knowledge of his status? Thanks! Pat McGowan (ex KENR weekends, ex KUHT, KTRK, KVRL) Patrick McGowan - NCP 3 New Century Productions
GEORGE LESTER and his wife live in Elkhart which is in east central TX near Palestine. Hear from him frequently until his email address begins to bounce over a month ago. Hope everything goes well with George Lester.
RED JONES (Carrollton, GA) Subject: Bob Grant Email. Bob Grant was asking about John Trotter. John worked a number of stations around the country. I first worked briefly with him at KAKC Tulsa as I was coming out of the Army where Chris Lane was also on the staff. When I was PD at KILT Houston I hired him as morning man and gave him the Honest John moniker. Great talent. Then he worked at KRIO McAllen Texas for awhile then moved to Abilene Texas where he passed away. Sad loss. Red Jones
CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego-San Marcos, CA) Hi Jim, I noted an item from Larry Scott the other day. One of the coolest people I've met in broadcasting, always cordial and a standup guy. Worked with him on an account back in 1973. I was doing commercials for a local dealership sponsoring Porter Waggoner & Dolly Parton. He left the scene here a couple of years later. When I left LA to return to Big H, he kept me company outside Las Cruces on into Fort Stockton on some station out of Ft Worth/Dallas all niter. Good to know he's hanging with us. Take care. Keep up the good work. CC

LARRY SCOTT [Dallas-Terrell, TX] Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#780) February 19, 2010 [Friday] A few years back the call letters were changed from KTER to KPYK. I haven't heard (Reverend) Warren (Daniels) in awhile. I used to get a kick out of listening to him on Saturday evening. I think he still preaches in Rockwall. His wife Linda died a few years ago and his two boys are in and out of jail. Most of the time in jail. Seems they can't leave drugs alone. Take care.
MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: For JRRR! Hi Jim and Lacy! First, thanks to Mike Simpson for the mention in the last JRRR. Always a lot of fun at our quarterly DFW Radio Lunch Bunch events, and you never know who might show up! Sam Pate was an absolute gem, we were blessed with his presence, and he is sorely missed. Next Lunch Bunch is coming up in March. I'll send you details to post. Also, Joyce Webster wrote you about the old KIXL in Dallas...for one, I wish we DID have a repository for old broadcast equipment in Dallas. Once upon a time, we had the Texas Broadcast Museum, which later moved across town and became the National Museum of Communications. It's been gone for at least 10 years now, and the contents are rumored to be sitting in a public storage warehouse in nearby Irving, gathering dust. One of the broadcasting "finds" once contained there was the original, massive Voice of America console. I do have my own little radio repository at the house (what radio person doesn't?) and part of that collection is the original green metal building sign from KIXL Radio, originally located at 1401 S. Akard in Dallas. Kind of a long story, but it's out of the elements now and waiting for a permanent home one day in a SOLVENT and PERPETUALLY-FUNDED local broadcast museum! Thanks, Mike Shannon
