ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
LEGENDARY METEOROLOGIST PASSES In the late 1940s, Don Kent becomes a member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). In 1960, he is one of the first recipients of the AMS Seal of Approval that indicates a level of excellence in his television weather forecasting. Don once says, I couldn't afford to go to college. We were dead broke, so I went over to the radio station and said I want to be a weatherman. And they said 'are you kidding?', and I said 'no.' They said try it and I did and I liked it! In 1951, Kent joins WBZ-1030 in Boston, MA. In 1955, he moves over to sister station WBZ TV CBS O&O CH 4 to become Boston's first TV weatherman. I had the best job in the world, yes that's right, and I had the best luck. I was at the right place at the right time. Only a weatherman can be wrong so much and still get paid. Jeff Kent, his son, tells the Associated Press It's amazing the impact he had on so many. All the meteorologists in Boston looked up to him. In 1983, Don retires from TV. After his retirement, listeners still hear his voice on several New England radio stations. Recently, Kent’s son, David, tells WBZ that his dad is in poor health. On Friday, he enters a New Hampshire nursing home. Don Kent dies at 92 early Tuesday, March 2, 2010 in a New Hampshire hospital. WBZ TV meteorologist Barry Burbank is a close friend of Don's. In March 2009, Barry writes a tribute to his mentor: The First Weatherman. WBZ TV's website contains former WBZ TV meteorologist Mish Michaels' interview with the veteran weatherman from March 12, 2009. (http://wbztv.com/)

ANOTHER SMOOTH JAZZ BITES THE DUST These days the Smooth Jazz format on radio takes a beating all across America. Its latest flip flop is Entercom’s KSSJ FM (Smooth Jazz 94.7) which switches at noon Wednesday, March 3, 2010 to Alternative Rock or Modern Rock as Radio 94.7. The KSSJ website says that the Smooth Jazz format becomes increasingly difficult to sell to advertisers and its audience size no longer sustains the station.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Who is the Beatles first manager? The answer appears below.

JOHN D. LEVAN (Springdale, AR) Hi again Jim, I am an old Rock-A-Billy guy. I'll be 72 in July. Started in 1954. Served in the U.S. Army and Nat'l Guard for over ten years. Was inducted into the National Rock-A-Billy Hall of Fame in 2004. Still do gigs occasionally. I was one of the founders of the famous "Tulsa Sound" with J.J. Cale, Leon Russell, ect. Worked with or for throughout my career for many different people, including Tommy Overstreet, Charlie Daniels, Ferlin Huskey, Hank Thompson, and on and on. You can Google my name and get info on me. Anyway, as I was saying I like what you do and thanks for the interest. The very best regards to you, John D. Levan - Rockabilly Hall of Fame (

(www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FB--Qq9ynw) CMT just voted it the #1 country city song. The live version Merle's release was recorded at the Muskogee Civic Center, with James Burton on guitar. It was a packed house, but, unfortunately, I was working a board shift at KMUS at the time and did not get to attend. Jim, have a great 2010... Connell Miller

TONY LAWRENCE (DFW-Arlington, TX) Hello Jim, My name should sound eerily familiar to you from way out of your past. Please pardon but my memory is certainly not what it once was. Too many years of radio can do that to a person. Although retired from radio since 1996 I think you will find why my name is familiar. Your name to me is almost as familiar as a family member. It's hard to be in the greatest business in the world and not remember the best. The problem with the business is that it consumes your time, life and soul to the degree that we sometime didn't see those who work around us. Also competition and ratings also created barriers (Hooper and Pulse). Thank you for adding me to your list. As an old fart I am still thrilled when someone even faintly remembers me from my 36 years in "the bidness" as Murray Cox called it. Tony Lawrence

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio. Hi again Jim and Lacy! Glad you both made it safely out of harm's way! Wow...there must have been some tense moments there. First, I want to invite current and former radio/TV/media people out to the first DFW Media Lunch Bunch of 2010 this Friday in Dallas (that's March 5) at 12:30PM. We'll meet at Humperdink's Restaurant, located on Northwest Hwy between Loop 12-Walton Walker and 35E-Stemmons Frwy. We'll hang out, visit with old friends, meet some new ones, do some networking, and enjoy some great food! Dutch treat, so each person pays for their own. Very informal and casual, come-and-go as you please, etc. RSVP not required, but it'd help to have a head count of sorts...just email me at mike@knus99.com. I can help with directions and more info if needed. If you've come out before, please note the NEW venue, which hopefully is more convenient for everyone. Thanks and take care...Mike Shannon, Dallas, TX
DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: New Entry at Jim Rose Remembers Radio. ...leave it to my colleague Bud Buschardt to bring those memories rolling back like so many neat little nuggets from the past! He mentioned Abnack Records and their Dallas office on Olive Street, with John Abdnor, a Ft. Worth insurance exec as head honcho, and his son John Jr. as contact guy. The Abdnors were really unsung groundbreakers during the '63-'65 musical frenzy in Dallas. KLIF was, as usual, at the epicenter of the action, and both Johns were regular visitors at Triangle Point, pushing their 'records du jour' to the DJs and the then current music director. One of the biggest successes they had was 'Western Union Man' by the Five Americans, ultimately taking the local group to Dick Clark's 'American Bandstand,' nationally broadcast from WFIL-TV in Philadelphia. Another lesser regional hottie of Abnak was Jon & Robin's 'Do It Again' (with a rather rakish after-title for the time) 'A Little Bit Slower.' I remember both John Sr. and his son as really nice guys, no pressure, easy sell, fun folks...unlike many record hawkers of the day. Dan McCurdy, Sherman, Texas - KLIF, KBOX-Dallas; WMEX-Boston; inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame 2004; retired Fortune 500 advertising/PR exec; freelance writer, voice talent
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Subject: Not dead YET!! Hello Jim, I changed my email address because I was getting a ton of junk mail and spam. It started when I let my email address be published in my column in Texas Escapes. I missed covering everybody when I sent out the new one. Sorry. I would prefer to keep this unpublished. Of course, if an old friend asks for it please pass it along to him. I hope everything is going alright and I will look forward to getting back on you subscription list. Thanks, George Lester
