CHINESE RECEIVE A PIG IN A POKE China Radio International (CRI), which is run by the Chinese government, leases KGBC-1540 in Galveston, TX with hopes of sending its broadcasts to the Houston market to become the first U.S. radio station to broadcast CRI programming 24 hours a day. Much to the surprise of the KGBC staff it begins to broadcast CRI programs on New Year's Eve 2009. The FCC officially lists KGBC as a Galveston-Houston radio station but in reality its signal does not cover the Houston market. Before he resigns on February 12th over a policy dispute after five months at the network Mark Shorey, a consultant at CRI headquarters in Beijing with 20 years of experience in radio, says It was the dumbest thing they could have ever done. CRI believes that they are broadcasting in Houston and continue to announce this fact on the air and on their Web site. Glenn Richards, former KGBC morning show producer, says that the radio station's signal is strong as far as the 610 Loop but the signal fades en route. George Lee, whose Electric Theater Radio Hour they remove to make room for CRI, says that if a listener drives from Galveston toward Houston, the signal usually begins to fade near Santa Fe: It's a small market station, and it was never intended from the day it was built to broadcast to Houston. Gabriel Arango, President of Siga Broadcasting Corporation says in a January 6th interview that he signs a letter of intent for a five-year lease with a well-known California broadcaster. In 2002, when he buys KGBC he upgrades its broadcast power from 1,000 watts to 2,500 watts.

RADIO HOST RUNS FOR TX HOUSE Blake Farenthold, morning talk host on Clear Channel KKTX-1360 (ex KRYS) Corpus Christi, TX is one of two finalists in a four-Republican primary who run against incumbent Solomon Ortiz (D-TX) to represent the Corpus Christi area in the US House. To be a candidate in the race Blake resigns from KKTX. This gesture may be only symbolic. It appears that the seat is safely in the hands of the Democrats because they send Ortiz to Washington, D.C. continually since he first wins the seat in 1982.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Dear Jim, I read Mike Shannon's response to there being no broadcast museum in Dallas in today's issue, Friday, February 26. There should be. I was excited to hear many years ago from Ken Carter that there was. At KIXL's location on South Akard which I believe was owned by Hymen Chiles at the time we moved into the building was a huge old record collection going back at least as far as the big band era, and it remained under lock and key while we were in the building. Initially there was other equipment, but it was moved during our move into the building or shortly thereafter. I particularly recall equipment that played the very large wax records, and I enjoyed the walk through history by our Group Engineer during the move. All of us felt so blessed that we had parking behind the building. Even though that building was old, it had some wonderful features which included a huge production studio, and the building was convenient to everything downtown. I'm sorry to say I don't know very much about the history of KIXL but I'm sure it would be fascinating. Mike probably knows much more than I. Hymen or perhaps Ken Dowe would know more about the contents of the old building. J.C.
ALAN ETTER (Washington, DC) Subject: Jim...I’ve been searching for audio clips of the old 7-Eleven radio spots – from the 70s and 80s – they were hysterical and among the best ever – ‘Oh Thank Heaven for 7-Eleven’ was the theme – can you help me out? Thanks! Alan Etter; Vice President; University Relations & Public Affairs; University System of the District of Columbia; Washington, DC (

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: 7-Eleven commercials... Alan (forgive the familiarity, but I assume that anybody who loved our 7-Eleven spots is a friend). I was in 'The Gang of Five' that developed the 'Oh Thank Heaven for 7-Eleven' slogan in 1967, as a member of The Stanford Agency, the in-house ad group for The Southland Corporation (7-Eleven). We had a reprehensible amount of fun, almost shameful to accept a paycheck kinda existence at the agency, with a group of writers (including our boss, Bob Stanford) that had more sheer, raw creative talent than I've ever been surrounded by in my life (I stayed in a state of awe from '67 to '81, when I made the jump to Southland's public relations department. Not as much fun, but absolutely necessary experience for my future position with another c-store company. I have a number of our oldies-but-goodies in MP3 format...how many MBs can your server handle in one swallow? Best...Dan McCurdy
TONY LAWRENCE (DFW-Arlington, TX) Hello Jim, As you can see you were one step ahead of me more than once: KPLT Paris, Texas 1961-1967 (I was in school and couldn't get away); KDOK Tyler/1967-1968; KLTV-CH7 Tyler/same time as KDOK (we had to stay busy); KKDA Grand Prairie 1968 (Part of the switch from KPCN); WFAA (820/570) Dallas/1969-1973 (On air during the last switch April 30, 1970) Met and worked with (Bud) Buschardt, one of the most decent people I have known; WFAA-CH8 Dallas (booth announcer) same time as radio; WRR-1973 (took over from Jim Lowe/left due to format change...what else is new?); KRLD 1973-1976; KPBC 1976-1979; TSN 1979-1991 (TSN moved from Fort Worth to Dallas); 1991 Back to Paris to buy into KPLT (big mistake, you can't go back!) and KPLX/KLIF 1992-1996 (was part time during my 11 years at TSN). There are those who would say we moved around a lot but those were the days when you could change stations with a phone call.

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio. Hi again Jim and Lacy! As for Charles George, he mentioned the old KIXL tower on Military Pkwy behind Hancock's. I went on a hunting expedition of sorts a few months back, just to see that tower and who it belonged to. Nowadays, it's all fenced off, although a little-used concrete bridge just beyond the fence links you to the tower site. I tried to reach the site from each side, but it's pretty well protected today. (I even had the traffic chopper fly me over it one day just to survey!) The tower is still standing, and, per the FCC, still belongs to 1040AM, but that's now KGGR using the former KIXL frequency. KSKY's towers on Bruton are supposedly no longer in use, but they are still lit at night, and the property looks much the same as it did when I lived just down the street from there nearly 40 years ago! Thanks and take care...Mike Shannon, Dallas, TX
