ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

1970S ROCK MUSICIAN PERISHES Los Angeles, CA session musician brothers Lolly and Pat Vasquez also appear on TV's popular music show Shindig. The brothers change their last name to Vegas. In 1968, Lolly and Pat form the Swamp Rock group Redbone which is a slang term that means Cajun or a person of mixed race. The members of Redbone are part Native American. Jimi Hendrix who also is part Native American is the one who urges the brothers to form Redbone. Members of the group include Pat Vegas (lead vocals, bass), Lolly Vegas (lead vocals, guitar), Peter DePoe (drums) and Tony Bellamy (guitar). Lolly writes the song Come and Get Your Love which rises to #5 on Billboard's Hot 100 in April 1974. Their only other tune to hit the Top 40 is The Witch Queen of New Orleans which peaks at #21 around Christmas 1971. Lolly suffers from bad health since he has a stroke 15 years ago. Lolly Vegas passes away at 70 in his sleep from lung cancer in Reseda, CA on Thursday, March 4, 2010.

OK CITY RADIO DOES THE SHUFFLE
At 2:00pm Monday, March 8, 2010 Tyler Media moves Country KKNG FM (King Country 93.3) Oklahoma City, OK to 97.3 which is the former home of KOJK FM (Jack FM). This shift slips King Country from a Class C 100kw signal to the weaker Class A 1kw rim shot. All KKNG FM air personalities exit the building as well as morning hosts Bill Thomas and K.C. Shepherd. KKNG FM also removes all currents and recurrents from its play list and flips to Classic Country. Last week, Tyler Media registers the new Web sites 933TimFM.com and TimFM933.com. Some of us question the Tim FM name tag for Oklahoma City because of the possible confusion with Timothy McVeigh's 1995 bombing of the government building.

TRIVIA QUESTION: What is the inspiration behind The Turtles' #1 hit in 1967 Happy Together? The answer appears below.

PAT MCGOWAN (Chandler, AZ) Hey again Jim, We have LOTS in common, here's some background for you. I am Univ of Houston grad, Radio-TV '67-'71. Very active in KUHF with Robb Ritchey from San Antonio and Milt Dooley (still at KPRC Ch 2). Robb's mentor was George Lester, worked for him at KBER. I first met GL when I went to SA with Robb for the weekend in spring '68. I remember visiting the on air control rooms of KBUC and KTSA. Pretty big stuff for an 18/19 year old kid. Fast forward to fall '70. I had finished a summer relief tour at WGN Ch 9 Chicago. Robb was Ops Mgr/PD? at KENR, still a daytimer, in the Dow Center. Charlie Temple was GM, Jim Rankin mornings, Jackie Ward PM drive. I became Robb's Sunday morning guy and put together a Gospel music show in and around the taped PSA shows. Actually started to get request postcards which freaked out Charlie (maybe we can sell this) <You can't sell this, it's Public Service time> (Any way around that?) <NO> Later while working at Ch 13 or Ch 26 moved to the new Fairfax subdivision in Spring. George and then wife (Kathy?) were neighbors. We'd walk the kids in strollers together. He was at KIKK then. I moved back to Chicago in '74, lost touch with him. Googled and reestablished contact in '06. Have heard from him every so often. Then the email address bounced, just as you have experienced. I have some old KENR stuff and pics, (including the horse trailer remote studio). If I can find them I'll pass along to you. And yes, add me to your list. I run high end network television mobile units. Should Houston appear on the schedule (you never know), let's get together for some Goode Bros BBQ! Pat

GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Subject: Short radio story. Jim, This is about as short as I can get it and still make sense. I hope it will work. George When I was working at KRGV in Weslaco in the late 50s a story making the rounds was about one of the Spanish speaking announcers at the radio station in Harlingen. His name was Martin. (pronounced Mar-teen). He spoke with perfect diction in a rich baritone. It was almost like music. He was a genuine folk hero on both sides of the border. When he got off work he often headed for Matamoras, Mexico just south of Brownsville, Texas. There he would meet with friends for a night on the town. One evening, when they all were feeling no pain, Martin invited them to come to the radio station so he could show them around. One of his rather inebriated friends climbed the radio tower. He slipped and fell to his death. They decided to place the deceased in the trunk of the car and quietly slip him back into Mexico. When they stopped at the border the officials noticed their nervousness. They were at a loss explaining the dead body in the trunk. It was probably only because of Martin's great popularity that he didn't end up in jail. The whole thing eventually died down and Martin continued his radio show as if nothing had ever happened.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] Subject: B & B Show. Jim: I was shocked to learn that Bill Austin has retired from the show "Beth & Bill" on "KEZ" Phoenix after all these years. I knew them both while living in Phoenix & they had the top-rated morning radio show for years in the Phoenix-metro. Surely there is a story buried in that headline! BOB & Sonny Lee

BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Jim, Barry & Mary's "Lunch With Lawyers" show is every Sunday from Noon-1:00PM central time on KNTH AM 1070 Houston, Texas A presentation of Bass Communications.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Alan Gordon says that he writes the melody to The Turtles' hit Happy Together from an open string pattern by a band mate to tune his guitar.
