ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

DIAMOND JIM DIES The Fort Wayne News-Sentinel reports that former 1960s air personality on Top 40 WOWO-1190 Ft. Wayne, IN Diamond Jim Brady unexpectedly dies at 67 at Lutheran Hospital on Saturday, March 6, 2010. Fort Wayne is the birthplace of James Ellenwood Jr. Over the years local listeners hear Diamond Jim's voice on several other radio stations in the market. Brady is also an announcer on CH21 WPTA-TV. The name Diamond Jim Brady has historical roots. Edward Arnold portrays the legendary gambler in the Universal Pictures movie Diamond Jim that releases on September 2, 1935. The film covers his romance with popular entertainer Lillian Russell. Diamond Jim Brady dies in 1917 which is almost 20 years before the film is shot. Edward Arnold, who plays Diamond Jim, actually meets Brady twice when Arnold is a young actor who begins his career in the theater. A press release indicates that Ellenwood loves to fish, smoke cigars and collect items that he finds interesting, but his greatest joy is to spend time with his family and grandchildren. James' survivors include his wife, Gwen; three daughters; a brother, Michael Lee Ellenwood of Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson. His memorial service is at D.O. McComb and Sons Pine Valley Park Funeral Home on DuPont Road in Fort Wayne. Diamond Jim's family asks that in his memory contributions go to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

BREAKING NEWS FROM CLEAR CHANNEL
No, there's not another severe earthquake upon which to report. All during 2009, Radio station owners and managers cut both employees and benefits due to what they call a down economy. Like oceans and beaches there are ebbs and flows. Maybe the tide is about to change because Inside Radio reports that Clear Channel SVP Bill Feehan tells his staff that 401(k) contribution matches begin on April 1, 2010 and is retroactive to January 1st. Mr. Bill says his decision comes from a prediction of better times for 2010.

STALKER RECEIVES SENTENCE ESPN reporter Erin Andrews' stalker who also shoots nude videos of her through a hotel room peephole faces his sentence in a Los Angeles courtroom. The 48-year-old Chicago-area insurance executive, Michael Barrett, pleads guilty to interstate stalking and agrees to a 27-month prison sentence. Erin's attorney says that she does not agree with the plea bargain sentence. Plus, Andrews asks that Barrett pay her $335,000 in restitution. Erin is a sideline reporter on ESPN's game telecasts. She, also, appears on the new season of ABC-TV's Dancing with the Stars.

JAY PENNINGTON (San Antonio-Boerne, TX)
Subject: a mention about KEXL and Ron Houston. Hi Jim. Last Friday I was interviewed on the subject of how one person can make a difference / how just a small positive comment by someone can positively greatly affect another person. About halfway through the interview I talk about what was the magic of KEXL, about how Ron Houston positively affected the whole town of Blanco, TX, I mention about other KEXL jocks such as Bobby Reyes and Nick St. John. I also talk about Augie Meyer needing a kidney and his race to get one before this May. Your readers might find it an interesting interview. (

CHET MAXWELL (San Antonio, TX)
Subject: Russ Knight. Hi Jim, Would you be so kind as to send me Russ Knight's email address? I would like to say hello to him. We worked together at KILT in the 60's, and again at KBOX in the 70's. And congratulations on the new Cash Box gig...to become their only Industry voice. WOW! They made a good choice. Thanks and best regards, Chet

BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Jim, Been meaning to tell you for a long that you are a wealth of information. I don't always write but your info on Merlin Olsen's passing and Russ Knight brought back many memories. Olsen was a great NFL player and he was a good man in what has become a prima donna sport. I used to listen to Russ Knight on my old Zenith radio when he was at KILT in Houston. Remember his jingle. I'd sing it but no one can hear me. Probably good. The Zenith was the size of a loaf of bread. What a great dial radio back in the day. DAVID PERKINS (Fort Worth, TX)
Subject: WBAP-FM. Hey Jimbo and Lacy (good girl...now tell your master to take you to see "UP.") Re: KMPZ-FM going to WBAP-FM. Oh great! Now my old country gold WBAP will sound twice as stupid. And while I'm riling up some folks, Charles George wrote a few weeks back about "Dallas" radio stations which included KBUY, KCUL and KNOK. To my knowledge those stations were NEVER in Dallas. They were in Fort Worth, an entirely different (and much better) city to the West of Dallas by 33 smiles. TRIVIA ANSWER:
Elton John's name is from Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean and his last name from bluesman, Long John Baldry.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, Texas) Jimbo, you write <<As Bob Dylan states, The times they are a changin'. JRRR predicts that this is a sign of more drastic changes on the FM dial as music radio becomes like dust in the wind.>> Sadly, YES...UNLESS folks with Real Radio chops concentrate on LOCALLY SERVING their cities-of-license with locally popular tunes, local information and LIVE local on-air entertainment. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN, DANO? It means returning to the days when RADIO WAS REAL, when radio was responsive to local folks' wishes...played local folks' favorite music (nationally popular, too, but more emphasis on LOCAL MUSIC SALES) and provided information and stories which have genuine local interest, angles and focus; contests which offer local payoffs for local participation. And LIVE local news and weather. Sound like the 1960s? Yes it does. It was the McLendon formula, (1) B-funny, (2) B-informative or (3) B-quiet (and play music). This is the ONE audience-building area in which the non-terrestrial sky-casters simply cannot compete. They are welded to the concept of BROAD-brush programming, generalities with NO local emphasis. Local TOWN-casters have no such restraints and are free to customize, literally tailor-make their station's sound, format and content to custom-fit the area in which they are broadcasting. REBORN LOCAL RADIO CAN generate listenership numbers that cannot be delivered by sky-casters...EVER! Here's Hoping it Happens (again)! GEORGE GOBEL (May 20, 1919-February 24, 1991) Did you ever get the feeling that the world was a tuxedo and you were a pair of brown shoes?
