ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

SOMETIMES IT HAPPENS IN PAIRS Two of America's top entertainers - one in radio the other in TV and movies - pass away in the last few days. Radio Ink reports that legendary New York radio air personality Ron Lundy dies at 75 on Monday, March 15, 2010 in Mississippi from a massive heart attack. Ron spends 30 years behind the mic in NY radio. Many NY listeners remember Lundy’s famous sign-on from 1965 to 1982 on Top 40 WABC-770, Hello, love, this is Ron Lundy from the greatest city in the world! When WABC flips to Talk in 1982, Ron moves over to cross-town Top 40 WCBS FM (101.1) where he remains on the air until he retires in 1997. How can we ever forget Peter Graves in his role as Jim Phelps the head of an elite team of spies in TV's Mission Impossible that runs until 1973? Peter dies at 83 in his Los Angeles, CA home on Sunday, March 14, 2010. If he lives Graves will be 84 on Thursday. Sandy Brokaw, his publicist, says that he suffers a fatal heart attack after he returns from brunch with his family. He is born Peter Aurness in Minnesota as the younger brother of James Arness star of TV's Gunsmoke. Peter studies drama at the University of Minnesota before he heads west to Hollywood. In 1980, Graves becomes a comedian of sorts in his role as Captain Clarence Oveur in the film Airplane! In the 1990s, he hosts the A&E documentary series Biography. Peter wins an Emmy when he hosts a Judy Garland special on A&E. Graves continues to work steadily. He scores roles in films that include 2002's Men in Black II. In October 2009 he receives a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Peter Graves' survivors include his wife of 60 years, Joan Endress; three daughters, and six grandchildren.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Jim, Guess I remember Chet from having to deal with management people. Anyway, I remembered Chet's name, and that IS something these days. Give Lacy a great big tummy rub for me! We people of the night sure have to stick together! I have to tell you about the response I had from the 40sh women in my family when I told them about your story on Carly telling the name of the guy from Your So Vain. Good memories. Okay, my friend, you keep on keeping on! And, as my Irish daddy, Danny Doyle, would have said, "Call me anything you want just as long as you call me in time to eat." I sure miss him on St. Patrick's Day because we had so much fun with it, but...I've tried to pick up the mantle and make it fun for my mother, my sis and my kids and grand-kids. THAT is what my daddy would have wanted, and I know it. Tomorrow I'm making an Irish potato soup to share with my mother, and my oldest brought me from Iowa's Dillard's the neatest Irish green shirt to wear on St. Patty's Day. I may have to wear it over long johns, but I'm wearing it! And, may the Luck of the Irish be with you! (Sometimes I wonder WHAT luck of the Irish...seems to me Ireland hasn't always had such good luck.) Optimistic, though...JC

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego-San Marcos, CA) Subject: Chinese Radio. What would the Chinese want with an American Radio station that barely gets out of Galveston County. Would it be to broadcast locally. NO.NO.NO. How about eavesdropping...listening to what's going not so much for military information but the kind of work that's being done on the oil rigs off the Gulf Coast. Originally Foreign govs. could not own American air waves. That was a great idea, but what do we have here? The Chinese censure and hack google, now they have a listening post where hi powered listening devices can be utilized as broadcast equipment and our dumb government which is run by a bunch of incompetent affirmative action educated idiots, can't smell the a** holes coming. I'm sorry my country is in such terrible shape. I mean think about it, how many Chinese speaking Texans are there? Maybe we could move to China and start a country music station. H*** we'd never get passed customs! A paranoid patriot.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX)
Subject: DFW Radio. Hi, I always figured if a station had a number I could call without being charged for Long Distance and they could be heard clearly they were in the Dallas Market. I know that is stretching it, since I called KRRV 910 when they had a number as well as KYAL 1600. Also KDSX had a number where I made requests. Some announcers seem to pop up at every station in Dallas and Fort Worth like Rick Vanderslice(sp). KNOK had studios at least offices by the Forrest Theater, since they had a console that could be seen in the window. I am not sure whether it was used much. KBUY was interesting though they got wiped out in my part of town at night by KXEL with Religious programming. I do like the Art Museums in Fort Worth, and also their downtown is alive compared to Dallas. I like to take the TRE to go to the museums there and to see the water garden. I have never had a radio I hated, just some I liked better than others. I used to enjoy collecting the coverage maps and other materials that I could get from Radio Stations. When the locals had programming I did not care for my radios seem to land on KELI 1430 or WKY 930. Also I enjoyed listening to John R. on WLAC 1510.

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#790) March 15, 2010 [Monday] Jim, John Hale here...sorry not to have written in a long time, but my computer one morning several months ago decided it didn’t know me, and it’s taken a longer while than I’d like to get it back up and running. It was cool to see Russ Knight’s email in the issue. I listened to and idolized him in his KLIF days while I was growing up in central Texas. I’ve got his ’62 Cruisin’ series CD, and every time I listen to it, I miss the really great radio from back in the day. It’s a shame that broadcasting is rapidly becoming a lost art. IPods will never replace real talent behind the mic. Hey, it’s great to be able to read the column again! John Hale

TRIVIA ANSWER: Jesse Belvin (Guess Who? #31-1959) who is 20 years old dies with his wife in an auto accident on February 6, 1960.

MARK CARRILLO (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Texas Radio Hall Of Fame. If you look at last year’s inductees of the Texas Radio Hall Of Fame and like me, didn’t recognize but one name, spend the $15 and become a voting member. We’ll never get more deserving folks from outside of Dallas or Houston or wherever these guys came from (I’m sure all very deserving of this honor) if we don’t join. Click on this www.texasradiohalloffame.com/. Join and let’s get some folks WE’VE HEARD OF in to the Hall Of Fame.

BOB EDWARDS [Peabody Award-winning member of the National Radio Hall of Fame] (May 16, 1947-p) The Louisville stations were loath to hire beginners, so I had to go across the river  at a tiny station in New Albany, Indiana, which is right across from the river from Louisville, Kentucky, where I grew up.
