CNN VET SWITCHES NETWORKS ABC TV announces that CNN veteran and international reporting star Christiane Amanpour takes over its Sunday morning chat show, This Week. Many insiders see this as a big morale booster for ABC News after word from division head David Westin that a massive downsizing is forthcoming. It is a major loss for CNN where she spends two decades as one of its most well-known correspondents. The seasoned reporter fills the void that anchor George Stephanopolous leaves when he moves over to Good Morning America that he now anchors with Robin Roberts. Christiane officially joins ABC News in August 2010. Up until then Jake Tapper fills in as temporary host on This Week.

He always gives them money but never expects anything in return. The Chilton tribute includes original members Jody Stephens and Andy Hummel, Evan Dando, Mike Mills from R.E.M., Jon Auer, along with Susan Cowsill (The Cowsills) and the Watson Sisters.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Subject: Wednesday's JRRR. Well...some folks got worked up, and I enjoyed it. Dan McCurdy talks about how things should be local to really get big numbers. Too bad that won't happen again! Even in our little town of Mena, AR there is very little local programming. I also finally know where the name Chet Maxwell became so familiar, in my radio days in Dallas during the 70's at KBOX. David Perkins writes about Ft. Worth being a much better place to live than Dallas, and there is certainly one thing I must say about Ft. Worth, it was always a much better place as far as concerts and getting big crowds!!! For years and years, it didn't seem to matter what the concert was in Dallas, it was very difficult to get those huge crowds. One other comment, it was those people who said something positive who made a huge difference in many, many broadcasters’ lives. So many never even knew how important a remark was. One of these days, I'll just send a list of all the guys, and they were mostly all guys, who did or said something encouraging and made such an impact in my life. They deserve to be named! Try to get some rest! JC

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: Fess (Parker). My sister, Evelyn Pate Allen's husband J.D., was best buddy with Fess in High School. They were separated during the war when Jim joined the navy and Fess the marines. Jim used to tell some great tales of the two of them growing up. Including the famous chicken ranch. After Jim had his stroke, his son visited Fess at the winery and took a VCR tape of Fess telling him the same stories his dad had told him. The tape is nearly two hours long. They were both football heroes in high school and Jim kept a scrap book of paper clippings, tickets to the games and such. Also, news clippings the two of them had sent home to the local paper, while away in service. Evelyn still has the scrap book and it is quite interesting to read. It also has photos of them in their football uniforms. Both were mighty handsome fellows. Jim and Fess were both lucky to have come home from the war. Many of the guys from San Angelo did not make it home.
EVELYN PATE-ALLEN (Kemp-Tool, TX) Jim, my Jim played Jr. & Sr. football for the San Angelo Bobcats. I have several pictures the San Angelo sports writer Blondie Cross took of both teams. F.E. [as he was called back then] was so much taller than he rest. Several things in a scrapbook. Jim's mom has a good picture of Fess (Parker) that was dressed as a hillbilly. He was in most of the school plays back then. Jim spoke some of the plays they made at an Odessa & Angelo game. When my husband had his stroke and loss of memory, paralyzed on right side, my son was living in San Diego. He had heard so many tales of those school years I don't think James really believed his Dad. He got in touch with Fess to see if he would consider a personal interview. He explained Jim's condition and thought hearing and seeing Fess on a video would jog his memory. Fess told the same stories we had been listening to for years. At times a glimmer of recognition shows a little. VERY LITTLE. Evelyn Pate Allen [yes I’m Sam's big sister]

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Hello Jim: Fess' (Parker) first movie was in 1952, so early 50's doesn't give much time; perhaps that's where he learned the hotel biz, later becoming millionaire. Don't know of this gap b/w University TX & Hollywood, if any. Best to you & Lacy. BOB & Sonny Lee
TRIVIA ANSWER: On April 19, 1987 The Simpsons begins as a series of TV shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show. On December 17, 1989 it premieres as a series. On January 14, 1990 regular TV broadcasts of The Simpsons begin on Sundays.
MIKE SIMPSON (Dallas, TX) Greetings Jim! It all started this way: Circa 1966 - I was a scanner-freak even before they actually even "scanned". Listening to Dallas PD, Fire, the DPS, and all of the suburban municipalities, I picked up on traffic accidents, drownings, fires, etc. immediately...and somehow had discovered the super-secret KLIF news hotline number. Frank Haley was the news anchor working evenings, and Frank and I developed a rapport based on the accuracy of the tips this goofy 16 year old kid was feeding him. KLIF was scooping rival KBOX big-time on street news! Eventually Frank allowed me to start doing short "voicers" by phone on the various stories I uncovered. As time went on, more and more KLIF newscasts included pieces authored by "Mike Simpson, KLIF 20 - 20 News", leading then McClendon National Program Director Bill Stewart to ask KLIF News Director Brad Messer "Who the **** is this "Mike Simpson" guy?" Brad told him I was "some kid from Bryan Adams High School who must listen to a police scanner 24 hours a day and feeds us great leads!". Bill Stewart's response was "Well, either HIRE him or get him OFF the air...he's not covered by our liability insurance." Next thing I know, I find myself sitting in Brad's office at Triangle Point, getting hired to drive a KLIF mobile unit for 4 hours a week on Saturday nights...at $1.60 an hour. I was on CLOUD NINE!!! I wasn't NEARLY good enough to go live from the mobile unit, and running into Ron (Jenkins) McAllister about 20 years ago at a Dallas Cowboys game, he reminded me of a drowning I covered out at North Lake one time where it took me about 20 takes to get through the read without stumbling! Sorry for the length...but your newsletter took me back into a great past. I look forward to reading every word in the future. Thanks, Mike Simpson
HOMER SIMPSON (April 19, 1987-p) Operator! Give me the number for 911!
