SALEM REELS HOUSTON RADIO BACK IN Here's another sign of the times. In December 2007, Salem Communications files to sell KTEK-1110 Houston-Alvin, TX to Business Radio with a contract that boasts a $7.75M price tag. Now Salem buys KTEK back for less than half that price. The new contract fee is $3.7M. Salem pays $800K in cash, plus $1.26M in debt forgiveness. The remaining $1.64M is credit for BusinessRadio to use in programming time on certain stations that Salem owns. An LMA begins on March 8, 2010. The Salem radio cluster in Houston, TX includes Christian Talk KKHT FM and News-Talk-Info KNTH-1070 (formerly KENR-1070). Long-time Salem execs, Stuart W. Epperson and Edward G. Atsinger III, buy KTEK under the licensee name South Texas Broadcasting Incorporated.
BAN SAVAGE AGAIN On Tuesday, March 16, 2010 Britain publishes its first list of people that they bar from entry into the country for alleged promotion of extremism or hatred. Conservative radio talk host Michael Savage whose real name is Michael Weiner is on that list. Later, the British Parliament changes its mind after an outburst by his fans. So, Britain's incoming home secretary lifts the ban on Michael from its list. All's well that ends well. Right? Not really, because Savage now says that local TV stations in San Francisco, CA ban his new TV commercial that promotes his show on Pappas Radio KTRB-860 (Xtra Sports), in his promo TV spot he tells viewers, Don’t be a schmuck, listen every day.

CHAD EVERSON (Minneapolis-St Cloud-Princeton, MN) LOL! Jim, I think they have finally put the death nail in the Democrat coffin. They have finally shown themselves for the tyrants they truly are and socialist squirrel nuts they can hide no longer! It is going to be a lot of hard work, but the victory is ours! MIKE SIMPSON (Dallas, TX) Greetings Jim! It all started this way: Circa 1966 - I was a scanner-freak even before they actually even "scanned". Listening to Dallas PD, Fire, the DPS, and all of the suburban municipalities, I picked up on traffic accidents, drownings, fires, etc. immediately...and somehow had discovered the super-secret KLIF news hotline number. Frank Haley was the news anchor working evenings. Frank and I developed a rapport based on the accuracy of the tips this goofy 16 year old kid was feeding him. KLIF was scooping rival KBOX big-time on street news! Eventually Frank allowed me to start doing short "voicers" by phone on the various stories I uncovered. As time went on, more and more KLIF newscasts included pieces authored by "Mike Simpson, KLIF 20 - 20 News", leading then McClendon National Program Director Bill Stewart to ask KLIF News Director Brad Messer "Who the **** is this "Mike Simpson" guy?" Brad told him I was "some kid from Bryan Adams High School who must listen to a police scanner 24 hours a day and feeds us great leads!". Bill Stewart's response was "Well, either HIRE him or get him OFF the air...he's not covered by our liability insurance." Next thing I know, I find myself sitting in Brad's office at Triangle Point, getting hired to drive a KLIF mobile unit for 4 hours a week on Saturday nights...at $1.60 an hour. I was on CLOUD NINE!!! I wasn't NEARLY good enough to go live from the mobile unit, and running into Ron (Jenkins) McAllister about 20 years ago at a Dallas Cowboys game, he reminded me of a drowning I covered out at North Lake one time where it took me about 20 takes to get through the read without stumbling! Sorry for the length...but your newsletter took me back into a great past. I look forward to reading every word in the future. Thanks, Mike Simpson

CHRIS HUFF (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#793) March 22, 2010 [Monday] Hi Jim. Since everyone's doing it these days...I've expanded my website (www.dfwradioarchives.com) on to Facebook. I thought you might want to share the link since it's a great way for people to share their pictures and stories about DFW radio! EVELYN PATE-ALLEN (Kemp-Tool, TX) Subject: Fess. Jim, Joan made a mistake in saying Fess joined the Marines As far as I know he wasn't in the service. Sam Barrett was the one Jim lost track during the war. Those two names were mentioned so much that I can see where she thought it was Fess.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Peter Noone, lead singer of Herman's Hermits, once interviews Elvis Presley for the UK music paper New Musical Express.
GEORGE LESTER (Palestine-Elkhart, TX) Subject: SHORT STORY. (Thanks for publishing the last one. I hope people will like it. Here is another for your approval) In 1967 I was made program director at KBER in San Antonio. I had been in radio for 14 years and it was the first time I had been anything but a disc jockey. I vowed that I would be a fair and reasonable PD and not like some of the tyrants I had worked for. Everyone seemed to appreciate my way of handling people and things were going like clockwork until a new guy came aboard who seemed to be determined to screw everything up. Harrell Banks wanted to fire him but I kept asking for a little more time to try to straighten him out. When we did a remote it was the new guy’s duty to take everything back to the station at the end of the run. I got word that the remote had been extended another day so I called and told him to leave everything there (carts, records, copy, logs) because I would be opening up the next morning. When I got to the trailer I found that he had taken everything back to the station in spite of my instructions from the night before. By the time I drove back to get it and return to the remote site I was late getting on the air. After Harrell heard about it he said that was the last straw. He was history. This time I just smiled and remained silent.
BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA (August 4, 1961-p) I’m from the government, and I am here to help you!
