I SPY STAR FALLS A suave sophisticated actor whom we admire in many TV series and movies dies on a jogging trail. Robert Culp falls and hits his head while he takes a walk outside his Hollywood Hills home. Lt. Bob Binder of the Los Angeles Police Department says that a jogger finds his body and calls 911. Doctors at the Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center pronounce Robert Culp dead at 79. We fondly remember Robert as he co-stars with Bill Cosby in the classic 1960s espionage-adventure TV series I Spy that runs from 1965 to 1968. The fellow actor and comedian tells The Times on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, He was the big brother that all of us wish for. Culp receives Emmy-nominations and scores new fans for his role as Bob in the 1969 movie Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice. In a six-decade career, Culp first becomes famous as the star of the TV western Trackdown on CBS from 1957 to 1959 where Robert is Texas Ranger Hoby Gilman.

LONG TIME HOUSTON MORNING RADIO TEAM CALLS IT QUITS Hudson & Harrigan begins as a radio morning team show on Top 40 KILT-610 in 1967 with Mac Hudson and Paul Menard. Over the years several others fill the roles of H&H. In 1974, one of my absolute favorite H&H morning team shows is Mark Stevens and Jim Pruett. Stevens and Pruett move it on over to Album Rock KLOL FM for decades. But Fred Olson and Randy Haymes spend the longest time together as H&H even after the format switch to Country. Jeff Garrison, OM of CBS Radio-Houston, is a triple-biller as CBS VP of Country Programming and PD of KILT FM. He has his work cut out for him to replace H&H. In the meantime PM Drive DJ Rowdy Yates is to fill in until Jeff locates a permanent replacement. Send your best stuff to Jeff Garrison at jlgarrison@cbs.com. Good luck.

MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Subject: JRRR 3-25-10. Jim...thanks for publishing the entire email from Mike Simpson recalling his days as a Dallas News "scanner-freak". What a terrific story of a young kid with a passion and how he was able to "wedge" his way onto one of America's truly great stations, KLIF of the 60's. Somewhere in all of our backgrounds I think we all have a Mike Simpson story. The KLIF newsroom in that era was competitive and creative. That Frank Haley would see the glimmers of a news-hound and Brad Messer would figure a way to get him on the air, were testaments to that amazing "machine" of information and even entertainment to augment the on-air personalities and the music of the day. Michael O'Shea (KLIF circa '67-74), Bellingham, WA
KLIF-1190 is where I'm fortunate to be behind the mic in the news department in 1972. This is right after Gordon McLendon sells The Mighty 11-90 to Fairchild. KLIF's News Director Ted Agnew hires me away from KBOX-1480. Radio good guy Michael O'Shea is the Program Director.
FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Thanks Jim, seems like Fairchild owned KOB for a time, sound familiar, can't remember, I think they had KOB when they filed for Chapter 11 the first time, they just did it again just before the first of the year. Did you get my e-mail last month about the TV antenna falling off the tower on our 10,680 foot mountain here, took out KOB, KOAT and several FM for several hours. It took down power lines. I think I sent it to you. Take care. Frank
JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Subject: Fess Parker. Jim, Although born in Dallas while my dad was serving in Europe during the war, I mostly grew up in California. I remember my 6th grade class going to Disneyland when it first opened. The highlight of the day for me was seeing Fess Parker with his coonskin cap! I was 11 years old and that mental image is totally clear to this day. Naturally I knew he was from Texas. I can still sing many versus to the Disney TV series! My first visit to the Alamo, I thought of Fess Parker. It's been nice reading about him even though sad that we lost another one who can never be replaced. He had a good long run. JC

EVELYN PATE-ALLEN (Kemp-Tool, TX) Subject: Fess (Parker). Joan looked up his bio. and he was in the Marines. That was the years we never knew what happened to him. So my baby sister Joan was right. My apologies to every one.
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Subject: 16 Candles Out. Jim: Two more stars are dimmed: (1) Ron Banks, vocalist w/group, "Dramatics," Dies in Detroit, 3/4/2010; they charted in 1971 & 1972 with: "Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get" & "In The Rain." (2) Johnny Maestro (Mastrangelo) famed lead doo-wop singer with The Crests & later Brooklyn Bridge, died at his FL home on 3/24/2010 @ 70. The former charted "Sixteen Candles" @ #2 in 1958; his latter group charted "Worst That Could Happen" #3 in 1969. His last performance was Jan 17 in CT, "The Ultimate Doo-wop Party." BOB & Sonny Lee
THE CRESTS a Manhattan, NY R&B vocal group with Johnny Maestro (Mastrangelo) as lead singer also scores with these Top 30 hits Six Nights A Week #28-1959, The Angels Listened In #22-1959, Step By Step #14-1960 and their last tune to register on Billboard Trouble In Paradise #20-1960. A member of The Crests, Patricia Van Dross, is the older sister of R&R soloist Luther Vandross who in a duo with Mariah Carey has the half million selling hit Endless Love #6-1990. Luther has three other Top 10 hits. James Ancrum replaces Maestro in The Crests as he leaves in 1960 to go solo with Model Girl #20-1961 and What A Surprise #33-1961. In the late 1960s, Johnny hooks up with Long Island vocal unit the Del-Satins who evolve into the Brooklyn Bridge to become what we Oldies DJs like to refer to as one-hit artists with Worst That Could Happen #3-1969.
DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) I wanted to let you know that I joined the Texas Radio HOF this year as a lifetime member. I am going to nominate you for the work that you have done and continue to do. I appreciate your hard work more than you will ever know. I also appreciate the contributions you made to the biz. I personally can't touch what you did in terms of talent, but I know the real thing when I see it and on April 7th I will put your name in the hat. Jeff Cunningham, DC

KAREN COOK (Houston, TX) Hey Jim I haven’t written in quite a while, but I wondered if you attended the 2009 awards show in Austin? My husband "Shotgun" and I didn’t get to go, so we didn’t get to catch up. It’s a good thing I can still go to Jim Rose Remembers to see what’s happening. I am going to submit Shotgun’s name to be listed in the hall of fame this year, so we will definitely be there for this year’s event. Here is a photo from my most recent interview at guitar center. I have written a book and this was a shot from the video. I thought it might help you remember who I am. You meet so many people. Hope you are doing well, see you soon. TRIVIA ANSWER: At one time the Gloucestershire airport in England blasts Tina Turner songs on its runways to scare away the birds.
BOB CROWLEY (DFW-Arlington, TX) For the end of the column, this quote from Lloyd Shearer: 'Avoid angry, abrasive people. They are generally vengeful. Avoid zealots. They are generally humorless. Resolve to listen more and to talk less. No one ever learns anything by talking'.
DUKE ELLINGTON (April 29, 1899-May 24, 1974) You've got to find some way of saying it without saying it.
