ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

LEGENDARY ROCK PHOTOGRAPHER DIES According to the Associated Press, distinguished Rock photographer Jim Marshall dies at 74 sometime in his sleep in a NYC hotel room on Wednesday, March 24, 2010. He spends more than a half-century to capture Rock-and-Roll legends on film. Marshall's pictures grace the covers of more than 500 record albums, plus extremely well-known artist photos that include Jimi Hendrix as he sets his guitar on fire at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, The Who during Woodstock on stage at sunrise, The Beatles backstage at their final concert at San Francisco's Candlestick Park in 1966, Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and many other memorable photos. Recently, Jim takes snapshots of Ben Harper and The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Many of Marshall photos are in several books. In March 2010, he releases Match Point in conjunction with celebrity photographer Timothy White. His appearance at a reception on Wednesday night is to promote his new book. Aaron Zych, manager of the Morrison Hotel Galleries, which hosts one of Marshall's last exhibits declares Jim's work is legendary. As far as music photographers, he is the godfather. Jim Marshall's survivors include his wife of 34 years, Karen James, and two daughters.

JEFF THOMPSON (Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: Thanks for including my KMSC staff guys. Jim: That was the hardest cut of all...since I REALLY wanted to include them. but to explain the film and its import took the full 200 words. Thanks, Jim, for your generosity. I'm sure Chuck, Jim and the others will appreciate the "tip of the hat" to their space news reporting service back "in the day." I hope lots of folks like you recognize them and want to hear this "back-story" to the space program...since these folks explained the complex and the unseen to the entire world. I think it's an important piece of history, though unfortunately, many dedicated space journalists have passed away in recent years. We're hoping to have one last reunion, like we did in 2001 before they're all gone. Thanks again for spreading the word to our old colleagues, including mine at KXYZ and KVVV-TV, as well as KMSC out next to NASA where we broadcast not only to Houston and the Space community itself, but also to the world, via UPI Radio International and for the Voice of America... Sincerely, Jeff Thompson

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego-San Marcos, CA) Subject: Open Mike performances. Hi Jim. I really enjoy reading about the Houston radio scene. So Many great memories. This month I've been doing open mikes in San Diego and Orange County. Great fun and I'm lucky enough to be received with lots of love. The audiences really go for "I Am Legend" and "Gators" from my CD SONG. So far I've done 9 different open mikes and I've found a bit of a performance niche for myself. This next week I'll do three more and plan on at least two or three a week. Thanks again for the good work. Hope all is well with you and the new lady. CC

JOYCE J C WEBSTER (Mena, AR) Subject: My cousin Jerry V. Logan's son finished his 3rd tour in Iraq and is now headed to Afghanistan, so he has strong feelings about our military, especially the Marines. His older son will retire with the California Highway Patrol.

JOHN & VICKY PICKERING (Houston, TX)
Subject: KTRH 80th Anniversary. Hello, stranger. We wanted to let you know that John Pickering was interviewed on KTRH Thursday, March 25th as a KTRH "Alumni". John's family, The Pickering Family - Mom, Pop, Bill, and John, sang live on daily radio programs at KTRH from 1948 to 1951. John was remembering some of the famous people who came through Houston and up to the radio station that was on the top floor of The Rice Hotel at that time. Before them Jimmy Short and the Short Brothers had a program and following them was Curly Fox and Texas Ruby. Roy Rogers, Dale Evans and Gabby Hays would appear. Also, Edgar Bergen who told teenager John when he asked where Charlie McCarthy was - "Well, son, I don't bring him to the radio stations!". George Morgan appeared and sang "Candy Kisses". Hank Thompson and Hank Locklin would make personal appearances with the Family Quartet in the Southeast Texas area. That training led to John and Bill being qualified to perform as professionals when they did the vocal backup work on Buddy Holly and the Crickets only group-sound album that was released while Buddy was alive, the 1957, "The Chirping Crickets" album. They performed on 9 of the 12 songs including "Oh Boy", "Maybe Baby" and "Tell Me How" and 6 others that are still released on compilation albums 53 years later. Thanks, KTRH for the memories. Thanks, Jim for keeping the memories recorded. Vicky and John Pickering. Houston, TX, USA (
