ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

RON SCALERA, R.I.P. CBS reports that its Executive Vice President and Creative Director of the CBS Marketing Group dies at 49 on Wednesday, April 21, 2010 in Los Angeles, CA. Leslie Moonves, President & CEO of the CBS Corporation, has these words: It is a day of profound sadness, shock and loss at CBS. We have lost a gifted colleague and a friend whose work graced the air of CBS every day, and whose engaging personality touched our lives. The creativity, energy and passion Ron put into his work will be sorely missed – from his brilliant on-air work and upfront presentations, to new and innovative forms of promotion. One of the true good guys has left us far too early and we grieve with all our hearts. Ron joins CBS in 1997 as SVP/Creative Director of Advertising and Promotion. He helps make CBS America's Most Watched Network. Scalera launches several successful TV series. Ron Scalera's survivors include his wife Elizabeth and children Rachel (13) and Michael (10).

JIM & JO TRAVIS (Hot Springs, AR) I was still in radio up until April 15, 2008. I was working at KCWM in Hondo (TX). It was almost like not being in radio. The music was so old that even I did not remember the songs. They went all computer. I have been looking for a gig. It would seem no one really needs a 68 year old DJ. They are probably right. Check out my Web Page www.JimWWTravis.com When were you at KVET? I was there off and on for 18 years. I got fired in 1990.

1973 is the year that an offer comes in from the PD of KVET-1300 in Austin, TX for me to vacate the AM Drive/PD/MD position at KBER FM-AM in San Antonio. So nice to be out of the limelight for awhile. But after my first morning on the air on the drive back to the Alamo City on I-35 a car quickly changes lanes in front of me. Right front bumper strikes their left rear and sends my auto into a spin. The crash slams my stomach against the steering wheel that causes tremendous pain. Elizabeth, my girlfriend at the time, rushes me to the hospital in San Antonio. Doc says that I have internal bleeding. The KVET PD hires someone to sub for me but the thrill is gone. Never do go back to KVET. Head east back to my hometown Dallas for a stint on Top 40 KFJZ-1270 from 1973-75 that ends up with me on the air from 9am-noon. Next comes Top 40 KXOL-1360 from 1975-76. The flip to Country places me on the air from noon-3pm. Those were the good ole days, my friend.

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego-San Marcos, CA)
Jim...what in the world is going on? Do these people have so little compassion they would be so rude...unbelievable. What in the world? I'm so sorry. Well I get the cold treatment frequently when I'm in Houston. Even from own family. They find it hard to believe that I'm experiencing difficulties and rarely contact me unless they need something. I've sent Xmas to them every year for my entire life and rarely get anything in return. But isn't the joy supposed to be in giving. Anyway stay in touch Jim. CC

WHERE DO YOU READ JRRR? Tell us how far away from Houston, TX that you read JRRR. Got a news tip or a question? Send your full Name, City, State and Country of residence to

CHET MAXWELL (San Antonio, TX)
Yeah, that wasn't a pleasant experience. I'm sorry that it happened to you. I hope that you and Lacy have a nice weekend to make up for it.

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Well, I still believe in you. You contributed to this business for many years. You work yourself to death to do this newsletter and they all want free ads, but offer no help. You are nominated for the TRHOF. I am not going to let them forget you. Don't feel disgusted. I have felt like the 5th wheel at radio gatherings in the past and I was in management for the stations. The only thing you can do is remember that you are better than them, although not as prosperous. God bless and keep your chin up. You are quality people. Jeff Cunningham, DC Kyle, TX (

TONY LAWRENCE (DFW-Arlington, TX)
Subject: Great memories... Thanx for the great work you put into JRRR. In almost every edition I am pleasantly surprised to see the names of the radio people who write to you. Many of them I have worked with and they bring back great memories from long ago although it seems like it was yesterday. The stories are fantastic too. Finally I have found folks who write in a language and about a time to which I can relate. Although retired I also noticed that I am not the only "old fart" radio person still alive. I hope Bud's picture in
http://57nostalgiaplace.com/ is an old one because he looks the same, if not better, as he did in 1969 at WFAA. Many of us now look older than Christmas. However, Bud always did live a healthier life than the rest of us. Tony Lawrence / Arlington, TX.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Louden Wainwright III is the fella who has the song
Dead Skunk In The Middle Of The Road that reaches #16 in 1973.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio Issue 807. Jim: I was fortunate to book & M.C. a show w/Roy Orbison in Charlottesville, VA in mid-60's; also with Glen Campbell there (who turned 74 on 4/22/10 & now lives in Malibu); also brought "The Guess Who" to University of VA for sold-out show at peak of their career w/Randy Bachman. Thus your JRRR for April 23 did hark back some great memories. BOB & Sonny Lee

WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE (1564-1616)
There’s hope a great man’s memory may outlive his life half a year.
