TEXAS MONTHLY CHANGES HANDS
Emmis Communications Corporation CEO Jeff Smulyan makes a second attempt to buyout his employer with an offer of around $90 million. Jeff's company, JS Acquisition and private asset management company Alden Global Capital, jointly make an offer to purchase all shares of Emmis which has its base in Indianapolis, IN. The Emmis group owns Texas Monthly magazine and half a dozen Austin area radio stations. This latest offer is the second takeover attempt by the former Seattle Mariners owner. In 2006, he proposes to acquire all public shares but later withdraws over disagreement with Emmis' board of directors' terms.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Hi, Jim and Lacy, Just be your own man, Jim, and do the work that's so important to you and all of us on your list. You've had so much experience in the business...and to have such a clear memory and fresh recollection of everything associated with your career is downright amazing to me. I would hate to see this one experience, painful as it is for you, spoil your perspective of who you are, where you've been and all you've done, which is more probably than any of the rest of us can claim. Stay "tall in the saddle, Partner". Tom

CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego-San Marcos, CA)
Hi, Jim. I’m sorry for the imprudence of our fellow man. Hope all is well otherwise. I used one of the jokes the other day about the Super Bowl. It was well received. I had to keep the audience entertained while I tuned My guitar. Had a new tuner and it didn't work as expected. Anyway sorry about the slight by our fellow radio folks. Take care of yourself & Lacy. I'll be in Houston for a few days in July and happy to treat you to lunch if you answer your phone. CC

ED STERN (Uvalde, TX)
Subject: Andy Cook Obit. Jim: Attached is an obit for my good friend Andy Cook. For many years Andy was part owner and GM of KINE/KPUP in Kingsville. He also spent a number of years working for the NBC-TV outlets in Laredo and Corpus Christi. Andy was also the voice of the (then) Texas A&I College Javalinas. While I have hundreds of antidotes about our relationship, I think one of the funniest is the following: I can't remember the exact year, but it was the year A&I won a national championship game that was to be played on a Saturday night in Kingsville and Andy was to call the game. On the night before I invited Andy and his date to the KEYS Christmas party. About 6 a.m. Saturday morning I received a call from Andy: "Brutha, guess where I am." Ed: "In bed with ------.? Andy: "No, I'm in the Nueces County jail. Got picked up for a DWI on my way back to Kingsville. Can you come pick me up? My car was taken to Robstown for impoundment." After all the hassle of getting his car out and sending him on his way to Kingsville around 9 a.m., with a massive hang-over I might add, I wondered how in the world was he going to manage to call a nationally broadcast football game that afternoon. I couldn't wait to hear it. I listened to one of the best called football games I had ever heard. The true mark of a professional. May he rest in peace. Ed Stern

J.R. KENNEDY (Houston-Pearland, TX) Subject: Red Jones. Jim, I read with interest Red Jones' memories of KILT in the early 60's. Wonder if he or you or anyone else knows what happened to Bill Slater? I remember when he stayed on the air 24/7 for a week to break the record for continuous broadcasting. Seem to remember it was staged at Mike Persia Chevrolet in the downtown area. Also, seem to remember when one of the jocks at KILT sat on top of a flag pole for 2 weeks at Gulfgate shopping center.

JOHN & VICKY PICKERING (Houston, TX) Subject: The Picks/Pickering Brothers. In 1984, MCA sent us more Buddy Holly solos and The Picks put backup vocal harmonies on them by overdubbing just like they did in 1957. We released them on our own label and these 60 or more songs have been released and are on hundreds of CDs outside the USA and on Amazon, et al. You'll find them on "Elvis and Friends" and "Legends of Rock 'n' Roll, etc. on Internet search engines. John and Bill recorded "Words" when they recorded in Nashville as The Pickering Brothers in 1970. It can be found on "The Bee Gees and Friends" CD listed as "The Picks". Bill Pickering died 6 months after the 1984 recordings were done. Vicky (and John) Pickering (www.buddyhollyandthepicks.com) / (www.myspace.com/thepicksbuddyholly

BOB RILEY (Houston-Cypress. TX)
Did you ever serve in the US Army at Fort Bliss, TX ? One of the guys I was with was Jim Rose. He was our unit's scrounger / loan shark. Just wondering. Bob Riley Cypress TX

FORT BLISS, TX never is my military home base. But, I do come very close to becoming an Air Force pilot in the U.S. Navy in another locale. Radio helps me see the world all across TX since 1964.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX)
Hi, I lost the e-mail with your address. If you don't mind I would like it, since I know it is time to send a subscription fee. Since my other memberships have come due like the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts, Railroad Museum, and Museum of Nature and Science. FidoNet and BBS's were not as fast but they did not clutter the screen with advertisements like on the Internet. I find I don't even see the advertisements, just go get the information I want. When your Newsletter arrives it is the first to be read. Thanks, for letting me be a subscriber, since I have always liked Radio. I was just not aware of who they were at times. Like I always think of you being at WFAA (1967-68) with Bobby Brock and Mike Marshall, since I would call the three of you with requests. You all were nice to take my requests. Others I liked to listen to Dave Thomas, Jim Thomas doing oldies on KFJZ, Tom Donovan on WHAS 840 used to love to hear him spin records and talk about the music, Captain Jay on WJR 760 I liked how he played Jazz and MOR music. 73, Charles George, KC5RAI
