CONAN SHOOTS ON WB LOT
Conan O'Brien hosts his new TBS late-night show from the historic Stage 15 on Warner Brothers Studio lot in Burbank, CA. The location is home to three daily Lopez Tonight and Ellen series. Both TBS and WB are parts of the entertainment conglomerate Time Warner. Conan sighs I can't wait to interview the cast of 'Jersey Shore' on the same lot where they filmed 'Casablanca. Jon Gilbert, President of Warner Brothers Studio Facilities, says We are absolutely thrilled to have Conan and his team come to the Warner Brothers Studios to produce his new series, which we believe will bring a wonderful energy and lots of fun to our campus. There still is no title for O'Brien's new hour-long TV show on TBS.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Hi, Jim and Lacy, Just saw the email from Jeff Thompson on JRRR. Apparently Jeff has confused me with some other Tom Ellis, because I graduated from UT in January, 1958, and immediately went to work at KWED-1390 in Seguin, Texas. By that Fall, I was working as a news anchor at KONO-AM in San Antonio, and was not involved in his production at UT. No big deal, just thought I'd let you know. Tom

JEFF THOMPSON (Winston-Salem, NC) Tom (Ellis) mentions his college days stint at KVET in Austin. I think another of our classmates who was a DJ there is now a big PR and political force in Austin. Still another colleague, Larry Worhl also was also a fixture at KVET. Larry later won a Pulitzer Prize reporting on a disastrous tornado up in Wichita Falls, then he became a part of NASA's drive to the moon down in Houston, in it's PAO office. Coincidentally simultaneously, I built and ran the community Radio station, KMSC, which I named after the space center. Earlier, back In Austin, I was first at KAZZ-FM, did reports on KUT radio then helped get KASE on the air, and was program director there for a time. Plus at UT I was a paid intern at the school's FIRST TV studio...and I also hosted had a nationally syndicated radio show, "Behind the Scenes" interviewing EVERY celebrity, author, politician and music or movie star who came to town. (That set my course toward being a broadcast newsman in NY at WOR-TV, WINS and NBC News.) - JT

SAM LEE [Samuel] (Beverly Hills, CA) Subject: A Sandwich from 1957. Thanks, Jim. Glad you liked the item. I try to send you fun & funny stuff. I used to like Arby's myself, way back when. We have them here, but the quality of their food is not like it was in the old days. Do you remember the hole in the wall across from the KLIF bldg, with the great ribs? Also, from your writings I gathered something happened to you at an event that was unpleasant, but I was unable to figure out what it was or what happened. I put your name in again for the Texas (Radio) Hall of Fame. Maybe this year is your year. Stay well, and continue the great work you do keeping our history alive. God Bless. Your friend, Sam Lee, KLIF News (www.ZeitgeistCorp.org)

ED MILLER [Milton] (Austin, TX)
Jim, Not sure who worked afternoon drive news across from you at KPCN. As you recall, we had some of the best news talent the D/FW market held, including Ken Elliott, Jim Carroll, and Ron (Jenkins) McAllister. I think David Day was already gone to TSN by the time you got there. I worked afternoon drive news for a while, but may have already moved on up from News Director to Operations Manager by '67. There were sure some stories to tell about these guys. Hope you can remember which one it was and tell the tales you recall. Those were crazy days, with us newsmen hanging out with police dispatchers, ambulance drivers, beat cops, and triage nurses, and all of us news guys from every D/FW station always trying desperately to outrun Sam Pate in our mobile news units to the scene of the very latest disaster. Keep the old radio memories coming, Jim. -Ed

KEN ELLIOTT is the dynamic newscaster on my noon-3 pm DJ show on KPCN-730 in summer 1967 in Dallas, TX. KPCN is on a Mexican clear channel frequency that has a strong signal which covers north and central TX as well as into OK. New owners flip the call letters to KKDA-730 with an Urban Contemporary format.

TONY LAWRENCE (DFW-Arlington, TX.) Subject: 'ED MILLER [Milton] (Austin, TX) Jim Newton, Bill Mack, Joe Poovey, and Mac Curtis, Keep the old radio memories coming, Jim. They mean so much more to us every year. Thanks for all you do. -Ed.' Those are five names which will never be forgotten. God Bless your contributions boys. Bill and Mac are two of my heroes and nicest guys ever. My Dad went to his grave never understanding why Bill and I weren't working at the same station because he heard us together on 820 during the switch at midnight from Dallas to Fort Worth. Ditto Jim for all you do. Tony Lawrence

TRIVIA ANSWER: Lacy J. Dalton gets her stage name from a friend named Lacy, J for her own name Jill and Dalton from her singing teacher Karen Dalton.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) I like a Mexican restaurant that is by the apartments that Bud Buschardt says he used to live in off of Northwest Highway. I also have gone to the German Bakery there, I especially like the Sauerbraten. I had a friend Asa Pearson who had been a lawyer who lived in those same apartments in the 70's, I meet him because we shared the hobby of shortwave radio. DART has problems but I still find it much more useful to ride than DTS. DART goes places that DTS never even went. I only wish that Arlington, Grand Prairie and Mesquite would get Public Transportation. When I was in school I learned a song Cast Your Fate To The Wind. The guys at school would have me sing it at lunch time, I was at a dance and there was a band playing, and a guy goes up to the band and asks whether I can do my song. They go sure, so I sang it, even though it was Dance for Rock 'n' Roll. The other song I could sing everyone teased me about while having fun The Motorcycle Song. Me and my arrow...I used to love it when KFAD would play this about the Land of Point, etc. Take Care, Charles George

GEORGE WALLACE (July 21, 1952-p) Look at all the buses now that want exact change, exact change. I figure if I give them exact change, they should take me exactly where I want to go.
