ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
DENNIS HOPPER 1936-2010 A legendary movie actor who battles prostate cancer, Dennis Hopper, succumbs to the disease at 74 on Saturday May 29, 2010 at his home in Venice, CA. Some of our favorite movies have Dennis in them. Hopper directs and co-stars with Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson the cult film Classic Easy Rider (1969). What teen from the Fabulous Fifties doesn't remember him in the James Dean flick Rebel Without A Cause in 1955? While still in his late teens, his second picture with Warner Brothers is Giant where once again his co-star is James Dean. Another of my favorites, Apocalypse Now (1979), has Dennis as a co-star along with Martin Sheen and Robert Duvall. Yet still another Classic movie True Grit (1969) Hopper's co-stars include John Wayne, Glen Campbell and again with Robert Duvall. His great film list goes on and on. Dennis Lee Hopper comes to life in 1936 in Dodge City, KS. He spends his younger days with his grandparents on a nearby farm. He and his family movie to San Diego, CA where he plays Shakespeare at the Old Globe Theater. Dennis is a two-time Academy Award nominee. In March 2010, he receives the honor of a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame. Dennis Hopper's survivors include his fifth wife, Victoria Duffy (32 years his junior). Dennis has 4 children by 4 different wives, 3 daughters and a son. He also leaves behind 2 grand daughters.

RANDY KENDRICK (Charlotte-Concord, NC) Subject: Moved and some bad news. Hi Jim, I am still enjoying JRRR very much. A few months ago, I moved from the Denver, Colorado area to the Charlotte, North Carolina area to take a much needed job. The bad news is that it turns out that my spleen had grown to ten pounds and had to be taken out last week. The worse news is that the pathology shows I have lymphoma. I am still in shock at how suddenly life has changed for me. I am likely facing quite a battle ahead. I am still recuperating at home from my surgery. Next step is a bone marrow biopsy. This is a very bad turn, but I have no choice but to fight for my life. Hope all is good in your world, old friend. Randy Kendrick; Concord, NC
RANDY KENDRICK is a newscaster on Top 40 KULF-790 here in Houston, TX during my time as a DJ there from 1978-80. No finer broadcaster or person can be found anywhere. Randy is top notch in every category, plus he's a good friend. JRRR asks that we pray earnestly for our radio brother Randy Kendrick's full and complete healing.
BOBBY COPELAND [J.] (Knoxville-Oak Ridge, TN) Subject: Judy Lynn. Country singer Judy Lynn dies in Indiana (AP). Jeffersonville, Ind. — Country recording artist Judy Lynn Kelly has died in Indiana at the age of 74. Relative Kay Kelly Cook says Kelly died Wednesday at her home in Jeffersonville after suffering congestive heart failure. Kelly was born in Boise, Idaho, and got her big break in her teens when she was hired to fill in for Jean Shepard during a touring show of performers from the Grand Ole Opry. In 1952, she was part of a show with Gene Autry. She performed under the name Judy Lynn. In 1980, she retired from show business and became a minister. She worked mainly in Las Vegas and was known for her flashy form-fitting outfits. Oh yes, she sang too. Ha. Gene (Autry) played three show dates in Tennessee in 1952 and she was probably added as a local artist to the program...

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Subject: Judy Lynn. Jim: Here is some trivia RE: Judy Lynn sent to Bobby (Copeland) & Thot you'd be interested also. Bobby: THx for this copy. Let me add some bits on Judy Lynn Voiten (birth-name); Born Boise, Idaho on 4/12/36. She had 6 chart records, starting in 1962. (She also toured w/T. TX Tyler in 1952). She had been a cheerleader for 3 years & was named Miss Idaho 1955, & onto Miss America pageant. Earlier in 1952, she was named Queen of Big Snake River Jamboree in Idaho & in 1954 won title of America's Champion Girl Yodeler. She was also a rodeo performer before becoming an ordained minister. She was married to John Kelly who also became her manager; don't know if he is living. BOB
TONY WILLIAMS (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Not a singer? Jim (Prewitt) may know or a thing or two about fishing...or at least catfish whiskers...but singing...forget it. Why I can sing anything from rockabilly to opera, especially after I get lathered up real well. But "Rainy Night in Georgia". Wow. I would not even attempt that. Brooks’ voice is like hot maple syrup dipped in melted butter. Jim, yes, please add me to your email list. That would be great. One of my all-time favorites...a little bit of magic that always weaves a spell for me. (www.youtube.com/watch?v=wMPa7LOosSE&feature=fvst) Best wishes, Tony Lyndell Williams; Richardson, TX

TRIVIA ANSWER: Elton John's first Top 10 hit tune is Your Song which lands at #8 around Christmas 1970.
CHUCK JOSEPH (Houston, TX) Joel A. Spivak was my hero as a teenager to get into radio! My dad had a grocery store and when I got home from school I would put my apron on and work in the store. My dad had a radio on in the store tuned to KILT and I would listen to Joel A. Spivak. What a great talent he was and I thought what a great job he has. One day the Shrine Circus was in town and Joel A. was talking about doing the trapeze act on a dare as a promotion and he did!! That did it for me I said I'm going to do afternoons on KILT one day and have a great fun job like Joel A. Spivak. I did follow my dream and wound up doing afternoon drive at KILT am & fm. I worked there from 1974 off and on till 1994 and had fun for 20 years. I also was I guess like Joel A. a rebel of sorts and they fired me 6 times and rehired me 6 times but it was the most fun job and the happiest time of my life! So thanks for being my radio hero Joel A. Spivak you inspired me to follow your lead and realize my dream!! Thank you and I wish you much happiness in your life!!! I'm retired now and a very happy man with a lot of great memories!!
