BRUCE ELROD [President, Cash Box magazine] (Ridgeway, SC) IN MEMORIUM - CASH BOX MAGAZINE - DAVE LANE 1941-2010 Dave Lane, Cashbox Magazine DJ 2006-2008 passed away this morning from a stroke. Dave truly loved Cashbox and he will be missed by the staff that knew him. Dave really enjoyed being a DJ and served many stations in his illustrious career. His family was with him at the end and had to make the decision most of us wish we never have to do, but I know Dave is in a better place having a hearty debate with St. Peter. Bruce Elrod (www.cashboxmagazine.com/index.htm)

DAVE LANE -
On Friday night, June 11, 2010 Cash Box President Bruce Elrod gives us a phone call with the shocking news of the passing of our friend Dave Lane. Dave is both a contributor and friend of JRRR. Until 1997, Dave Lane is a DJ on KQUE FM here in Houston, TX as well as in other radio markets. The passing of our friend Dave Lane saddens all of his many fans.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Subject: Arkansas. Dear Jim, Flash flooding in the early morning hours at Albert Pike Campground in Montgomery County...about 45 miles from here...has taken several lives. Channel 4 KARK TV out of Little Rock and Fox News are covering a report of 6 to 10 deaths at an RV and tent campground on Lake Ouachita at a point where two rivers converge, some of the dead are children. Emergency Management personnel are searching for missing now. Apparently 6 or more inches of rain occurred sometime around five o'clock this morning. I'll let you know if I learn more about this. The latest death toll is now definitely confirmed is 18 with approximately three dozen people still missing and the search continues. It is a very beautiful wilderness area, and people love to take their families there to camp along the river. Terrible thing. They keep referring to our mountains as hills. It is what they call a wilderness area, no good roads going in...that kind of thing. The reason people go is because it is remote...clean air, clean water, beautiful trees. Really, really tragic. Most of the people so far are from Texas and Louisiana. THAT much I know for sure. It's really rugged out there. JC

JOEL SPIVAK [A] (Washington, D.C.) Sure I'd be happy to get the newsletter. I have nothing but fond memories of Houston, and I don't think I ever met anyone in Broadcasting quite like Gordon McLendon. Thanks Jim.

JIM BELL (Houston, TX)
PART I Subject: Houston radio veteran Jim Bell says he has retired after 45 years in the broadcasting business. I'm grateful for Jim Rose's radio newsletter that's read by so many people, because it lets me tell a lot of people of my retirement all at once. I started out in radio in 1965, working for Jeff Thompson at KMSC FM in Nassau Bay, directly across NASA Road One from the Johnson Space Center. In those days, before LBJ died, it was the Manned Spacecraft Center. Note the initials and our call letters. The old KMSC frequency now belongs to KMJQ - Majic 102. Jeff taught me everything I know about radio and that kept me going over the next four and a half decades at stations up and down the dial. I've worked with some of the best and worst people in radio, at some of the best and worst stations. I've tried TV a couple of times over the years, but I didn't last long in that field and I returned to radio, where I belonged. In the late 60s my first news job was chasing cops and police cars for the late Richard Dobbyn at KIKK AM and FM. That was an experience, let me tell you. Stay tuned for Part II of Jim Bell's retirement message in the Wednesday, June 16, 2010 issue of JRRR.

MIKE SHANNON (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) OUCH! Sorry to hear about all of that! I used Go Daddy just briefly once; got good reviews and a couple of friends had good things to say about it. Problem I had was difficulty in posting more than one thing at a time to their FTP server. If I'm posting station logos or photos to my website, that could take EONS to do, one at a time. Thankfully, they were very nice about everything, and even sent me a refund of my unused time (I didn't even ask for that...I was shocked to say the least!!) Don't know if it's too late, or if you're open to suggestions on this, but I use a company here in Dallas called Virtbiz (www.virtbiz.com) who has been wonderful for the 7+ years I've had them. Cost is very reasonable, 'bargain factor' is very fair, service is top notch, and I usually hear from the owner of the company when I have any problems. They also handle all the stations in the local CBS cluster here, and all the offshoots (individual show pages, blogs, etc.)--Mike (www.knus99.com/)

TRIVIA ANSWER: In March 1974 at the Moscow University, George Hamilton IV becomes the first Country singer to perform in Russia.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Free Speech. Hi Jim, the problem is many of the talk show people cut off any person with views different than theirs and are just plain rude. Not just about Politics either like a Radio Host who interrupts callers with advice before even letting the person finish. I find we have lost the ability to let a person talk about issues and we just get sound bytes. I think History may show Nixon to be a better person than many in the Republican Party or Democratic Party. Nixon learned how to use the Media after... Unlike Dan McCurdy I think we should institute the Fairness Doctrine, but the money will still find a way around this. Problem is too much power in too few people. Worse is when truth is mixed with lies so as to be deceptive. However; even Andrew Jackson had to deal with his wife still being married to her former husband. Also Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton had issues that led to a duel. Problems come we try to clean up the past. I also know that it is easier to express ideas of contempt if you never have to face the person. Charles George

WILLIAM ORVILLE DOUGLAS (1898-1980) Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us.
