ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

EX-BEATLE DIES The Beatles begin their success as The Quarrymen. The Quarrymen name comes from the school that they attend. The Quarrymen’s first recording is a cover of Buddy Holly’s That’ll Be the Day. Ken Brown is a guitarist in the band. Brown starts his career as a member of the Les Stewart Quartet where he plays guitar with George Harrison. Band leader Stewart refuses to go through with a planned residency. So, Brown and Harrison ask John Lennon and Paul McCartney to fill the open slot. They play seven Saturday night performances. But during the last performance Brown breaks his leg and can no longer play. Harrison, Lennon and McCartney kick him out of the band. On June 9, 2010 Ken Brown passes away at 70 in his home after a long battle with emphysema. At the time of his death Ken works on his autobiography, Some Other Guy.

AUSTIN, TX LOSES FORECASTER
Meghan Danahey KVUE TV ABC CH24 Austin, TX weather forecaster leaves the building for love. For the past two years Meghan delivers her weather forecasts during the breakfast and lunchtime hours on CH24. On Monday, June 21, 2010 she proclaims to the world on her Weather Corner blog that she exits the TV station because she finds love in NC: When I moved to Austin, I planned to stay for a long time. It was my hope to find love, happiness and longevity in this fantastic city. The good news. I found it. The bad news. I found it halfway across the country. Meghan says that she meets her future husband at a golf tournament in South Carolina in summer 2009 and that she will soon move to the Charlotte area. Danahey says that she does hope to continue her broadcast career. Meghan's last day on KVUE TV is on Friday, July 2nd. CH24 weekend weather forecaster, Albert Ramon, is her replacement on the DayBreak and MidDay newscasts. KVUE TV begins broadcasting on UHF CH24 in Austin, TX on September 12, 1971 as a full-time ABC affiliate.

TRIVIA QUESTION: Rock group ABBA has 16 songs on Billboard's Hot 100 chart but they do not speak English. How do they record the lyrics? The answer appears below.

MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN (Cincinnati, OH) Subject: WLW RADIO MAKING NEWS. And not necessarily in a good way. I was out of Cincinnati on vacation June 5-13. When I returned, I found out that long-time WLW Host Mike McConnell, who had the 9-12AM Mon-Fri shift, was relieved of that slot now that he has agreed to broadcast on WGN-AM in Chicago. As soon as WLW knew he had accepted that job, they said BYE immediately. Never gave him a chance to say goodbye to his regular listeners. WLW afternoon Host 12-3pm Bill Cunningham threatened to go to WGN Radio too, but has signed a new contract to remain on WLW. However he is taping a pilot to have a show on WGN-TV in Chicago. Today's newspaper has double WLW bad news. Cunningham’s TV show is being sued even before it airs. Apparently Bill made some comments while filming that show, that offended some Chicago residents. And WLW Extra Innings Host (after Reds games) Doc Rodgers has announced he has terminal stage 4 lung cancer. He's still on the air with WLW. Rodgers used to work in the Reds organization. He's been doing extra innings ever since former Red Tracy Jones left that slot to do the 3-6pm shift which he does with former WEBN DJ Eddie Fingers that was occupied by Gary Burbank until he retired!

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) Jim, thanks for passing along the info regarding J Buffett's concert on the Gulf Coast. When I was at KNUS I had the opportunity to go to Cancun on a promotion with him, but I was simply too busy to do it. Of course, it would have been work for me but I understand his entertainment on the plane was worth the trip! My oldest son and his sweetheart are proud "parrot heads", my number two son and his family recently attended a Wal-Mart Corporate concert in Bentonville, AR, where the Zac Brown band pretty much stole the show and they were the opening act!!! My daughter who is still in the Dallas area is a huge Country Music fan. Basically I've passed all the info to all of my children. I have four biological children and my sons' sweethearts are my children, as well. I'm very, very blessed. JC

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#833) June 23, 2010 [Wednesday] Hey Jim, I couldn’t agree with you more Jim. An experienced programmer who knows his music does NOT need an audience test to tell him what songs are burnouts. For that matter, if you’re playing oldies, they are already established hits so the only choice to be made is audience demographics, which can be adjusted by the specific music mix that’s played. I’ve always thought audience research is just another way for a radio station to spend money needlessly. That money would be much better spent paying for talent and promotions. Yours Truly, John Hale; Mobile Magic Music 512.336.8742 (33.Music) "We're at the best parties!"

ED MILLER (Austin, TX) Jim, We flew into Laredo in the afternoon, checked into a hotel near the International Bridge, and headed across the river for supper. After we ate, we caught a cab and headed out to the dark and mysterious walled compound surrounding Boys Town to get to work on our other hungers. Poovey wandered around talking to the young guys who were cigarette vendors. Ryder and I went on inside and began drinking and checking out the girls. They tended to be quite young and very cute to a couple of gringo horn dogs like us. There was a lot of drinking and carrying on, and then we started making trips back to the girls' rooms. First one I went with had an infant asleep in a crib in her room. Details escape me after that point...then went back inside and hooked back up with Ryder and Poovey. PART III of KPCN-730'S Ed Miller, Joe Poovey and Randy Ryder's border town adventures are in Friday's issue of JRRR.

JERRY HEILMAN (Nacogdoches, TX)
Subject: KDOK. KDOK was a great station in the 60s. We would listen to it when KLIF would drop power at night. Several of their greats went on to McLendon stations, including Larry Graham (Alexander), John Bass, Hal Martin, Jimmy Rabbitt, Malcolm Landess, and more. Others ended up working at major market stations around the country. Even Jerry Houston (Litteral) r.i.p. worked there. Larry, Jerry, Malcolm, and Larry Mack (i.e.) all worked at KEBE/KOOI in Jacksonville for a time after leaving KDOK. Great talent.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Swedish Rock group ABBA does not speak English but they pronounce the lyrics phonetically in all of their 1970s hit records.

BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Subject: cancelled due to bomb. Jim, today's (Sunday, June 27, 2010) Lunch With Lawyers show was cancelled when police had to evacuate the building due to a bomb threat to the radio station. DAVID LETTERMAN (April 12, 1947-p)
Experts say that Iran may have nuclear weapons. That's bad news - they may have a nuclear bomb. Now the good news is that they have to drop it with a camel.
