HAPPY JULY 4TH WEEKEND!

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

MARTY AMBROSE DIES! All I can think of to say is: OH NO! What a complete shock this is! Marty is one of the nicest and most talented people in radio. First meet Marty in 1978 when I'm the noon-3 pm DJ on KNUZ-1230. Ambrose drops by the radio studios to let us know about his new radio traffic reporting venture which is a first for Houston, TX. Last year Marty and his wife sit beside me at the JRRR table at the 2009 TRHOF induction ceremonies. Marty Ambrose truly is a Texas radio legend.

IF YOU THINK THIS ISSUE OF JRRR IS WORTH READING...Please forward this entire issue to five of your friends and associates! To subscribe to Jim Rose Remembers Radio send your full Name, City, State and Country of residence plus email address to rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

THE KING WILL LEAVE THE BUILDING
After 25 years, 76-year-old talk host Larry King announces the end of his CNN Larry King Live program on Tuesday, June 29, 2010. Larry's contract expires in spring 2011. He first makes the announcement in a post on his show's Web site: I talked to the guys here at CNN and I told them I would like to end Larry King Live, the nightly show, this fall and CNN has graciously accepted, giving me more time for my wife and I to get to the kids' little league games. Larry King Live is at one time competitive but the program's ratings are in a decline mode in recent years. Sean Hannity's Fox News talk show leads the 9 pm time slot in the cable TV news competition. Rumors are afloat that America Idol's host Ryan Seacrest might be King's successor. Ryan already brings home a cool $15 million a year from his radio show plus its syndication. Seacrest is #44 on the 2010 Forbes' Celebrity 100 which is a list of the most powerful celebs. Stay tuned to this Bat channel.

There's still time for you to vote your choices for the 2010 Texas Radio Hall of Fame Inductees! I don't get it. I voted for you and Scott Hodges & Bruce Hughes. ANDY WALDROP (Houston, TX)
Jim, Marty Ambrose passed-away this morning, As you probably knew, he had been diagnosed not too very long ago with ALS. He took himself off the air several weeks ago when he just couldn't do it anymore. He had been getting progressively worse. Early yesterday he reportedly told Scott Arthur that he would be going home to be with the Lord today (meaning yesterday). He was correct. I haven't heard of any service plans as of yet. Andy

JOHN JACKSHAW (Houston, TX) Subject: Marty Ambrose. Posted on Facebook a few minutes ago: Traffic legend Marty Ambrose was diagnosed with ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease, back in April. It was already advanced at that time. Marty died this morning, he was 69. Marty was a gentle soul with a smile that would light up a room. RIP Marty. The airwaves won't be the same without you.

MIKE BRAUN (Fort Worth, TX) Subject: Buddy Bostick birthday. Jim, Here are items I hope you’ll use in your next newsletter: I’d like to say "Happy Birthday" to Texas broadcasting pioneer M.N. "Buddy" Bostick. He celebrated his 92nd birthday last month. Buddy was the longtime president and general manager of KWTX Broadcasting Company, which owned and operated KWTX-AM, KWTX-FM and KWTX-TV, Channel 10 in Waco. This year, Channel 10 marks its 55th year serving Central Texas. Next year, KWTX-AM will celebrate 65 years on the air. In addition to the Waco stations, Buddy and his business partners also started KBTX-TV, Channel 3, Bryan; purchased KXII-TV, Channel 12, Ardmore, Okla.; KNAL radio, Victoria; and KLFY-TV, Lafayette, La. Buddy was voted Pioneer Broadcaster of the Year in 1996 by the Texas Association of Broadcasters. I had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spin records and talk on the radio at T-X AM and FM when I was hired in 1975 by program director Dave South (who is now the Texas A&M sports announcer) and the late Frank Fallon, station manager and the fabulous sports voice of the Southwest. Frank was inducted into the Texas Radio Hall of Fame in 2004. Thanks, Jim, and best wishes. -- Mike Braun

ED MILLER (Austin, TX) Jim, We kept after it all night, and only stumbled back across the river at breakfast time. We were all broke, having spent everything on beers and young Mexican beauties. Got back to the hotel not long before time for our return flight, with no money to pay for our room. We lowered the luggage out the back window into the field behind the hotel, hoofed it casually out through the lobby like we were headed out for breakfast, slipped around back, got the suitcases, and headed off down the road towards the airport as fast as we could walk in our seriously weakened and still considerably impaired condition. Hitch-hiked up a ride, made it to the plane on time, and got back to Dallas less than 24 hours after we left. Only sleep we got was on the flight back to Dallas. Don't know how or if you can clean this up for a family-oriented website, Jim, but there it is. Different world back then. They'd throw us in prison for that kind of behavior these days. -Ed
