EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL JEFF THOMPSON (Greensboro-Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: Congrats to Jim Bell on Retirement. Congrats, Jim Bell on your recent retirement from KUHF 88.7 and from broadcasting itself. You've certainly had a long and varied fruitful career from local to major network to public radio. And thanks for your kind comments in you published farewell about my role in the beginning for your career. Building and running KMSC radio in NASA's shadow was a daunting task...so I sought young new staffers. People that I thought could "cut it", whom I believed had the drive and talent to "make it" in this crazy industry. I picked you, Jim, along with Gordon Basham. Chuck Cashmere, Hurt Porter, Steve Edwards and our late, great friend, Clarence Chaline, (on-air, Bob Elton). Well, you ALL certainly DID make it, coast to coast...and you made me look good in the process. So thanks and congratulations...my friend and colleague. Jeff Thompson
CUMULUS TAKES GREENVILLE, TX In 2009, Cumulus Broadcasting sells Classic Country KGVL-1400 and Country KIKT FM (Rhythm of Texas 93.5) in Greenville-Cooper, TX to Alpha and Mike Horne. Mike becomes the GM. The Greenville Herald-Banner recently reports that Mike Horne resigns his GM post at the radio stations and that Cumulus retakes control of the pair. He tells the Banner: Recent FCC decisions about the future of the stations have caused us to make a business decision to leave Greenville. We are grateful to everyone who has helped us with the stations and wish everyone in the area nothing but the best in the future. On July 1, 2010 Cumulus takes back the management of KGVL-1400 and KIKT FM. KIKT originally goes on the air as KGVL FM on April 2, 1984. On September 4, 1984 KGVL FM flips its call letters to the current KIKT.

TRIVIA QUESTION: What is songwriter Chip Taylor's real name and what are his ties to motion pictures? The answer appears below.
ERNIE PHILLIPS (Greenville, MS) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#837) July 02, 2010 [Friday] Jim: wonder if any of your readers know the whereabouts of Dave Ambrose who worked at KLIF back in the 70's? Have thought of him many times and wondered where he might be. I spoke with Rowdy Yates in Houston as his dad Joe Holstead worked with Dave and lived near him as well during this time period.
DAVE AMBROSE is one of the several morning show hosts that we have on Top 40 KXOL-1360 when I'm MD/noon-3pm DJ from 1975-76. His wife's dad owns a big construction or roofing company in the Ft. Worth, TX area. When he leaves KXOL he goes to work for his wife's father. That's the last that I know about him.
CONNELL MILLER (Bella Vista, AR) Subject: Senior citizens. Hi Jim, Yeah, I know these senior jokes sometimes play "pin the tail on our keesters." My mind certainly hasn't been feeling like I'm 67 (on June 6); unfortunately, my body is intently studying the fact that it might be! About the only pluses I can see for us to be in this semi-advanced position in life is that I can now get my Social Security (until the anointed one depletes it) and that our local Golden Corral restaurant just down the road in Rogers charges us $4.99 (drinks included) from 1-4 p.m., Monday through Friday, for its all-you-can-stuff-down-your-gullet Senior Buffet. Can't get a McDonald's or Subway meal-deal that cheap! For $10.88, including tax, my wife and I do that a couple of times a week. I think I'll wait until July 26 when cuz'n Ed (Miller) turns the big 67 to forward this to him. I will say, however, that he is looking and feeling pretty darn fit at this time. By the way, I'm certainly enjoying your posting of The Three Traveling Radio Horn Dogs, chronicling the misadventures of Ed, Randy, and Groovy Joe! He could probably spin those tales off into a whole blog by itself! Have a good'un and take care, Jim... Connell

BOB CROWLEY (DFW-Arlington, TX) Subject: Ms Danahey. Jim; Thanks for the update on Meghan Danahey. She was our go-to meteorologist at WBAP when she was at WFAA. On more than a few occasions, she was live with me as we went to wall-to-wall coverage of severe weather. Not only was she completely competent and up to date with her information, she was cooperative and flexible in meeting our time constraints and contingencies...and she was a very pleasant person to deal with. We had many nice conversations when she called in the Saturday morning forecasts too; always willing to give that little extra to help make the news block better. I always found that dealing with a complete pro (like Meghan) made me a better newscaster too. I've had the pleasure of working with some top-notch meteorologists like Steve McCauley (WFAA) Troy Kimmel (KVUE) and Roger Smith (NWS-SAFO), and Meghan ranks right up there with the best. Good luck to her in her new location and her new relationship. Bob Crowley

JERRY HEILMAN (Nacogdoches, TX) Subject: KDOK. I think both of those (Bill Young, Frank Haley) were before my time (lol). I do have some great memories made during my 30 yrs in radio (1966-1996) here in the Piney woods. Was fortunate enough to work with some great talents. Larry Graham (Alexander) went on to serve as McLendon's National Production Director for a short time (hated the big city), and Jerry Houston (Litteral) did a lot of voice-over work, production, and character voices at his own studios. Both were super guys and taught me a lot. Of course, this was back in the days when you had to physically splice tape, etc., and only had an AMPEX 2 track recorder.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Chip Taylor is the stage name of songwriter James Wesley Voight who is the brother of actor Jon Voight and uncle of actress Angelina Jolie. A few songs written by Chip Taylor include The Troggs' Wild Thing, Merrilee Rush and Juice Newton's Angel of the Morning, plus I Can Make It With You by The Pozo Seco Singers and many other tunes.
DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: Rick Stoughton. Greetings! Jim & Lacy Hope you are both doing well. Feel free to use this in your newsletter if you like. This is way after the fact, but I recently noticed (while reading Mike Shannon's History of DFW Radio website) that Rick Stoughton passed away in September of 1988. I had no idea. In addition to being Chief Engineer at KZEW/KRQX, Rick was one of the instructors at the Dallas Columbia School of Broadcasting when I was a student there (1984-86). He taught the engineering course & did some of the other teaching, taught us all a bit about the engineering side of it (whether we were engineering students or not.), took as many of us as wanted to go on a tour of the KZEW/KRQX studios & transmitter sites, built our in-house student station (KDCS), shared stories of working at KLIF in the 70's, etc. He was a good man who helped a number of people that were just starting out in the business. I know that you have space limitations, so I'm going to stop at this point. Peace, Take Care, David
