EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL CONNELL MILLER (Bella Vista, AR) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#837) July 02, 2010 [Friday] Jim, Ed (Miller) and I were real close as we grew up in Dallas. My path went askew in June of 1959 when our family sold our station in Weatherford and bought KMUS in Muskogee and KWON in Bartlesville, and we then moved to Muskogee (dubbed the "Sin City of the Southwest" in a magazine article that came out about that time. Coming from Big D, talk about culture shock!). Anyway, I moved back to Dallas for a time in the '60s and did visit KPCN on several occasions, getting to meet Randy, Horace Logan, and Poovey. This was all before '67, so I probably didn't get to meet you. In the '80s, when Ed had his Texas Tube Room recording studio in Ft. Worth, I came down and played guitar on some stuff Poovey did. Always a good time and a funny cat! Like so many, gone way too early. Except for the time I spent back in Dallas, I worked at our stations starting in 1959. But I have to tell you, it probably wasn't near as much fun as everyone seemed to be having at KPCN. I had no thought of asking my uncle Giles (Miller) for a job there, but if he'd offered, I would have come in a heartbeat! I hope you and Lacy can weather whatever might come your way. Stay warm, dry, and may the gods of Ready-Kilowatt keep the electricity flowing! Have a good weekend...Connell BARRY KILGORE (Houston-Conroe, TX) Jim, Jerry & Merry Burgess have returned from Florida and we are finally getting them on the air. CASH BOX EDITOR DIES From July 1942 to November 16, 1996 Cash Box magazine is a weekly publication that devotes itself to the music and coin-operated machine industries. Cash Box's most prominent competitors include Billboard and Record World. Beginning in October 25, 1952, Cash Box places a star next to the names of the most important artists. During the formative years of recorded sound from 1956-1980 the name Marty Ostrow is very well-known as the Editor-in-Chief of the influential trade publication Cash Box magazine. Under Marty's tutelage, Cash Box becomes the first publication to coin the term Red Bullet to report tunes that move quickly up its music chart list which becomes the industry standard. Ira Howard, who works with Marty from 1952-1965 recalls, Everybody I knew in the industry liked him, and he knew almost everyone in the industry. Like it is with rock 'n' roll, Marty will live on in the hearts of all his friends. Jerry Ross record producer (Sunny, 98.6, Sunday Will Never Be the Same) remarks, I am saddened by the passing of one of the truly fine gentlemen of our Music Industry as we used to know it. His door was always open. Marty Ostrow, the editor, the friend, #1 with a Bullet! On Tuesday, June 29, 2010 Marty dies at 80 from a long time illness. Marty Ostrow's survivors include his wife, Phyllis and three children, Steven, Robin and Karen. In 2006, with the approval of the family of the late president and publisher of the original edition of Cash Box, George Albert, the new Cash Box resurfaces as an internet-only magazine with Bruce Elrod as its owner, editor and publisher. (www.cashboxmagazine.com/cbradio.htm & www.cashboxmagazine.com/index.htm) In 2009, the new paper edition of Cash Box magazine reappears. Since 2008, Cash Box magazine's radio reporter is Jim Rose who also owns, edits and publishes the Web column-newsletter that you now read, Jim Rose Remembers Radio. HOUSTON PACIFICA BACK ON THE AIR What will thieves think of next? Pacifica KPFT FM (The Sound of Texas 90.1) Houston, TX returns to the airwaves after it suffers a 36-hour power outage when copper thieves damage its transmitting facility. Probably due to the current recession, a growing problem is the theft of copper. RBR-TVBR reports that thieves discover a goldmine, or copper mine, inside telecommunications facilities and radio transmitter buildings...full of copper components which can be ripped out and sold for their scrap value. Despite the inherent risk, we have not heard of anyone being electrocuted while stealing copper from a live transmitter site.
TRIVIA QUESTION: How does Marvin Gaye's half-million selling 1982 tune Sexual Healing come about? The answer appears below.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: When Radio Was. Hi, I use to ride the bus to work and also while taking developmental courses at El Centro, etc. The bus driver worked the Urbandale route which I rode. He was always giving advice to the teenagers and me also. He also worked as an announcer at KNOK 970 doing a Gospel Show. He told me I should give up the Jazz and Blues for the Gospel. What give up Jackie Wilson, Otis C., Tyrone Davis, you got to be kidding. He told me that I should think of voice work, I said funny I was told the same by Ron Chapman, I guess that is the way of telling me to think of another career.
