ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

HIGH TICKET PRICES EQUALS CONCERT CANCELATIONS Charlotte Observer newspaper columnist, Théoden Janes, writes that ticket prices are a key factor in the cancelation of big shows in the Charlotte, NC area: Average price of a ticket to see one of the top 100 tours in 1996, according to Pollstar data: $25.81. Average price to see one of the top 100 tours in 2009: $62.57. That's nearly a 150% increase. Price for a cheap seat to see red-hot Justin Bieber at Time Warner Cable Arena: $31.50. Ticket sales...extremely strong. Price to see uber-popular Adam Lambert at the Fillmore Charlotte: about $40. His concert sold out almost immediately. Price for good seats to see Santana - which hasn't had new material in five years - at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre: $81.50. The show cancels. Price for a premium seat/VIP package to see Lilith Fair at Verizon: $756. The show cancels. Neighborhood Theatre owner Zach McNabb claims: It's a simple formula that's gotten lost amongst the larger bands and promoters: Cheap tickets plus desired artists equals higher attendance, and higher profits.

LONDON BUYS TEXAS
The FCC gives its nod to London Broadcasting's acquisition of ABC KIII TV that serves the Corpus Christi, TX market from its owner Michael McKinnon for $31.3 million. In 2009, London buys ABC KMBT TV in Beaumont-Port Arthur, TX from McKinnon for $25 million. This leaves Michael with just one other station, IND KUSI TV with mostly news in San Diego, CA. Other London properties in TX include: CBS KYTX TV in Tyler-Longview; NBC KCEN TV in Waco-Temple-Bryan and KMAY-LP TV also in the Waco-Temple market. The FCC gives approval for London to purchase CW KCEB TV in Tyler-Longview. The FCC also grants London a failing station waiver of the rule that bans ownership of two TV stations in a small market like Tyler-Longview. London's honcho is Terry London. Sun TX Capital Partners is the backer.

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

JO TRAVIS (Hot Springs, AR) Subject: Roy Rogers Web Site---TRIGGER. Jim, I guess you've read by now about the closing of the Roy Rogers Museum in Branson and the upcoming auction of Trigger. I am outraged! This is the email I sent to the administrator. With everyone you know I'm hoping that maybe you, or the many legions of readers you have, might be as po'd as I am. I even sent an email to Randy Travis' site. He either bought or was given the grandson or great-grandson of Trigger way back when, when I was still on the air. I just don't think it's fitting that Trigger may become someone's coat rack at their house instead of being buried out at Apple Valley where Bullitt and Buttermilk are buried, and where Dale and Roy are. I think it's time to reunite the Happy Trails family. Can you help? Thanks, Jo (www.JimWWTravis.com)

LYNN WOOLLEY (Temple, TX)
Subject: Joe Salvador. Jim, I got the biggest shock of my radio career from Joe Salvador. It was 1972 and I was fresh out of UT/Austin and working nights at KNOW 1490. I made three airchecks and drove to Dallas with my girlfriend. First, we dropped by TSN and KFJZ and dropped off one tape. Next to KLIF, and finally to WFAA where Joe was News Director. WFAA was last because I had high hopes, having been told by J. David Joiner that he was leaving and thereby creating an opening. The shock was that Joe hired me on the spot. I took a physical and was soon moving to Dallas to work with Ted Agnew, Max Williams (Tooker), Don Norman, John Allen, Bill Blanchard -- and later Frank Gentry and Dan Cutrer. Joe -- if you're reading, thanks for those halcyon days and for taking a chance on a young and very green broadcaster. Lynn Woolley

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX)
Subject: summer time song. Howdy Jimbo. My favorite summer time song is "IN THE GOOD OLD SUMMERTIME. Recorded by many but my favorite was recorded by Connie Francis. summertime and the living is easy (here on Cedar Creek Lake.) That was a good song to go to sleep by. You sure stirred up some memories in my brain when you requested summertime songs. I will more than likely be trying to stop my brain from singing old songs all the day long. Going way back, my favorite album was Bongo, Flutes and Drums. Remember Whipped Cream? I dearly loved that tune.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SUMMER TIME TUNE? JRRR wants to take a poll as to your favorite summer time songs. Give some thought as to at least one of your favorite summer time tunes and send it to us. We'll put them all together for a Top 10 favorite summer time songs list. Send your favorite summer time song title along with its artist to rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

FRANK B. WRIGHT (Dallas, TX)
Subject: Summer songs. My favorite? That Sunday, That Summer - Nat King Cole. Frank B. Wright

BOB RILEY (Houston-Cypress. TX) Subject: Best Summer song(s). "Lazy, Hazy, Crazy, Days of Summer--Nat King Cole, "Dance, Dance, Dance"--The Beach Boys, "Summer Time Blues"--Eddie Cochran

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX) Subject: Summer Songs. Jim, The first song that comes to my mind as a favorite is "Summertime, Summertime" by the Jamies. I know I should probably look at the summertime hits list because there are a lot of great summertime songs. But that one particular song has always said to me "let's bring on the summer!" Bud

CHUMBE SALINAS (Benevides, TX) Subject: Summer tune. Hey, Jim and Lacy! Hope all is well on your end!! Just read your newsletter and I'm submitting my all time favorite summertime song from the summer of 1970, Mungo Jerry's In the Summertime!! Makes me think of summer and good times!! Another one of my favorites is Gershwin's Summertime but the original is not necessarily my favorite...probably Louis Armstrong's rendition is! This choice is a little more nostalgic sounding than Mungo Jerry's, but I've always liked it. It was one of the first songs I learned on the guitar (when I used to play). [Next email] And speaking of Summertime...woke and couldn't go back to sleep (went to bed too early). Someone posted this on my Facebook page 2 hours ago!! And here I don't believe in coincidences! :) www.youtube.com/watch?v=mzNEgcqWDG4 Hope all's well and your computer problems are in the past! Chumbe

TRIVIA ANSWER: John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John sing Summer Nights in the movie Grease.

MIKE MARSHALL (Dallas, TX) Subject: Summer Song, Lee Douglas. Jim, The best all-time summer song is, "That Sunday, That Summer" by Nat Cole, Summer of ' 63. I've heard that he considered it his favorite recording. About Lee Douglas, I was working 4 till 7 on WFAA in Dallas in 1968. I took my summer vacation and drove my '56 Porsche to Montreal to visit my future wife. When I came back I discovered that Charlie Van, the PD had hired Lee and started him in my slot to fill in for vacation. He liked him so much that when I got back to Dallas Charlie told me I was the new all-night man. Mike Marshall

EVELYN PATE-ALLEN (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: Favorite summer song. Glen Campbell's Lazy Crazy Days of Summer. Evelyn Pate Allen

MARK TWAIN (1835-1910) It is the will of God that we must have critics, and missionaries, and Congressmen, and humorists, and we must bear the burden.
