ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

YANKEE PASSES Legendary NY Yankees ballpark announcer, Bob Sheppard, dies at 99 in his home in Baldwin, NY on Sunday, July 11, 2010. Some say that Bob has the voice of God as it radiates off the baseball stadium walls. From the last days of Joe DiMaggio through Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Reggie Jackson and Derek Jeter, Sheppard's resonant voice greets Yankee fans with the words Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Yankee Stadium. R.I.P Bob Sheppard.

DALLAS RADIO STATION SHUTS DOWN KVTT-1110 is a daytime AM operation with an FCC license to broadcast in Mineral Wells, TX that shoots a signal to the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex. Heritage Christian originally offers Christian music and talk programs on KVTT FM (97.1) until 2009 when its parent company sells the frequency to North Texas Public Broadcasters. But after 34 years on FM and on KVTT-1110 the AM frequency goes dark on Monday, July 5, 2010. Doug Price, KVTT GM, announces on its Web site: We are shutting down the operation and will no longer encourage giving to our ministry. We attempted to build an audience for 1110, but we were unable to build enough of an audience to get the financial support we needed in sufficient time to keep us on the air.

RED JONES (Washington, D.C./Reston-Centreville, VA) Subject: Summer songs. In surfing the net folks have named hundreds of songs re/summertime. Here's one not yet mentioned. Roger Miller's In The Summertime. At the time (late 50s) it got loads of air play because it ran a minute 45. And back then any song under 2 minutes received lots of air play...how else would you cram 16-18 records an hour with a huge spot load? 3 in a row? Not on your life back then. Segues were verboten. Even Capitol Records got smart and edited longer songs down to 2 minutes on special Radio only discs. No "bathroom" songs came along until El Paso. You had to find a dry empty pocket! Red Jones, Georgia Radio Hall Of Fame, WKNG

BOB MILLER (Detroit-Plymouth, MI) Subject: Summer Songs. Hi Jim, I guess my favorite summer tune would have to be "Theme From A Summer Place" by Percy Faith. Bob Miller

Ken's struggle with Parkinson's progressed into dementia; in addition, "Bones" has lost 30 lbs. His wife Doris is with him. I will keep everyone posted. Ken was inducted into Texas Radio Hall of Fame several years ago and turned 85 last Texas Independence Day. Mike McHenry (son-in-law) Sent from my iPhone [urgent news!] Ken did pass away this afternoon, 7/11. I will send you the details of his funeral in Houston once known. Thanks. Mike

CHUMBE SALINAS (Benevides, TX)
Subject: Summertime. Another summertime song that just came to mind that I really like and that became popular the summer of '66 (between by freshman and sophomore years at U of H) is "Summer in the City" by the Lovin' Spoonful. According to Wikipedia, "...the song is ranked number 393 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of all Time." Great summer song! :) Chumbe

JACK BISHOP (Dallas, TX) My all time favorite summer song "Summer In The City". Thanks. Jack Bishop

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: Summer Songs. Jim, A couple from the 70's that I remember hearing often on KLIF (1190 in those days): Summer by War, Saturday In The Park by Chicago. Take care, David Faulkner

BUD BUSCHARDT (Dallas, TX)
Subject: Summer Songs. Wow. Didn't know you were getting all that rain down there. It is a beautiful day here but I think we have a 75% chance of heavy rain with gusty winds. Summertime, Summertime goes back to 1958 where it was a #2 hit. It was reissued in 1962 and made it up to #38. Something about it still sounds fresh. Good weekend. Bud

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Subject: summer song. Personality by Lloyd Price and Summertime by the McGuires..Gary D.

MIKE MARSHALL (Dallas, TX) Subject: Summer Song. Jim, Both songs are from the summer of 1963, but the lyrics of That Sunday are much more meaningful, especially to me since it was the year I met my wife. (but not in the summer. It was in November) I was with American Forces Radio in Berlin that year. Mike

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Beatles' Penny Lane comes from a street in their hometown, Liverpool. Penny Lane gets its name from 18th century slave trader, James Penny.

FRANK B. WRIGHT (Dallas, TX) Hi Jim, Summer songs are interesting to consider since they evoke special (sometimes adolescent) memories of where you were, who you were with, a girl, a special occasion...well you get the drift. I really wrestled a favorite summer song, but finally settled on "That Sunday, That Summer". Other contenders included "Summer in the City" by the Lovin' Spoonful and Johnny River's "Summer Wind". Of course, I could probably have another favorite tomorrow!

REVEREND BILLY GRAHAM (November 7, 1918-p) Love is to the heart what the summer is to the farmer's year. It brings to harvest all the loveliest flowers of the soul.
