EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL MICHAEL O'SHEA (Bellingham, WA) Jim...A memory I had forgotten, revived by Tony Lawrence's email: When I first "pitched" the PD job of KLIF in August 1970 Lee Douglas was our midday air personality. I agree with Tony, Lee was a terrific announcer, and a great guy. I recall the day Ken Dowe appointed me as program director...barely 23, never been a PD, never been a boss of anything other than my dog. Ken told me that unfortunately my first duty as KLIF PD would be to fire Lee Douglas. I was stunned...but KLIF had already hired an east-coast "flame thrower" of a jock, Dickie Heatherton...who was the brother in law of Dallas Cowboy Lance Rentzel, who'd just married Hollywood heart-throb (and Dickie's sister) Joey Heatherton. So, my first duty was to give Lee "the bad news". Nervously waiting in my office for Lee to sign off at 3PM...I was fidgety and folding and re-folding his license and final check, listening to his final minutes on-air...and then he said (and I quote precisely): "Well, if the boss didn't hear the show I'll be back on Monday, Ha-ha, now here's Engelbert Humperdinck's 'Please Release Me, Let Me Go'...". My program assistant Gail knew what was comin', ran out of the office crying leaving me alone to face the happy Lee as he strolled out of the studio. Gulp!! Lee went on to WFAA after that. He knew the termination wasn't my idea and forgave me for it. Like Tony, I've completely lost contact with Lee. Sincerely, Michael O'Shea
EVERGREEN SONGSMITH DEPARTS A member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame who pens some of our favorite all time Classic tunes, Hank Cochran, passes away at 74 on Thursday, July 15, 2010. Hank writes many memorable tunes - Patsy Cline: I Fall To Pieces, She's Got You; Eddy Arnold: Make The World Go Away, I Want to Go With You; Johnny Paycheck: A-11; Mickey Gilley: That's All That Matters and Ray Price: A Way to Survive. Several artists like Ronnie Millsap, Ray Price, George Jones, Jack Greene and Gene Watson record his Don't You Ever Get Tired Of Hurting Me. He also co-writes George Strait's Ocean Front Property and The Chair as well as Johnny Bush's 1968 Top 10 hit Undo the Right. Cochran and Grand Ole Opry star Jeannie Seely are husband and wife from 1969 to 1979. Hank writes Jeannie's 1966 smash record Don't Touch Me. The list goes on and on. A private memorial and a public service are in the planning stages. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

THE KILLER STRIKES AGAIN! Fabulous Fifties Rock ‘n’ Roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis has a new record album on the way that features many hot Rock artists. The Pumpin' Piano man's last studio album is Last Man Standing in 2006. For his new record album, Mean Old Man, Jerry Lee puts together a whole slew of famous friends: Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, John Fogerty, Ringo Starr, John Mayer, Slash, Kid Rock, Eric Clapton, Ronnie Wood and Willie Nelson to name just a few. The record arrives in two forms, a 10 track standard release plus an 18 track deluxe version. Lewis fans who buy the record through iTunes receive a bonus track, Here Comes That Rainbow with Shelby Lynn. We can look for Jerry Lee Lewis' new record on September 7, 2010 on Verve/Universal.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Who is the piano player on British Rock band T-Rex's 1972 dynamite tune Bang a Gong (Get It On)?
REMEMEMBER Dickie Heatherton well. When I become a newscaster on KLIF-1190 in 1972, Dickie is the mid-day DJ. One day on the intercom he tells me that vivacious actress songbird Joey Heatherton is his sister. In summer 1972 she has the hit record Gone. The Heathertons are hot commodities. Being an avid Dallas Cowboys fan I know that Joey's husband is all-pro wide receiver Lance Rentzel. Michael O'Shea is the KLIF Program Director. The legendary Mike Selden is PM Drive DJ. Ted Agnew is the News Director who hires me after I leave KBOX-1480. Bruce Hughes is one of the best newscasters around. Deep-voice buddy John Butler holds down weekend DJ duties. At that time KLIF-1190 remains the best-sounding radio station in America. KLIF is a fun and extremely exciting place to be.
CHUCK BLORE (Los Angeles, CA) I love that...Thanks Jim. Chuck

MIKE SHILOH (Houston, TX) Jim: I'm glad you wrote to me yesterday, I just haven't had a chance to write back. As you know there are practically no radio jobs in Texas these days so I'm preparing to leave this afternoon to take a job in Florida. I had intended to write you back when I get to Florida tomorrow night. Don't despair about the situation with the website, and I hope you won't let the unkind words of a few people make you consider giving up, they're just a few people when so many of us enjoy what you do and want you to continue. I'm going on the road but I'll write back as soon as I can. Best wishes always, Mike Shiloh

TONY LAWRENCE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Favorite Summer Song. Has anyone mentioned Kirby St. Romain's 'Summer's Comin' ?
KIRBY ST. ROMAIN's tune Summer's Comin's highest position on Billboard in summer 1963 is #49. As many of us know, Kirby is a Louisiana boy who is a graduate of NTSU north of Dallas in Denton, TX. Pat Boone and Roy Orbison also are NTSU students. St. Romain and Rock singer Scotty McKay (Max K. Lipscomb) are songwriters from my hometown Dallas, TX. It is Dick Clark who suggests the name Scotty McKay to Philly based producers Bob Crewe and Frank Slay. In late 1957, Scotty joins Gene Vincent and the Blue Caps as a rhythm guitarist/pianist. In 1965, The Scotty McKay Quintet has a cameo role in an AIP Vincent Price horror flick based on Edgar Allen Poe’s The Black Cat. Scotty appears on screen performing Sinner Man plus covers of Bo Diddley’s Bo Diddley and Chuck Berry’s Brown-Eyed Handsome Man. McKay records on the Ace (New Orleans), Parkway, Swan, SSS, Dot, Event, Desk, Phillips, Capri, Lawn, Falcon and Claridge labels. Up to 1962 Scotty does 6 singles on Ace records with sidemen Mac Rebbenack, Allen Toussaint and Fats Domino’s backing band.
LYNN WOOLLEY (Temple, TX) Subject: KNOW-1490. Jeff Stevens (Bob Botik) was PD when I was there. Bill Watts was ND. Mike Lucas did mornings. Chuck White was there. Jay Allen (Jerry Snyder) and Little Oz. Bill Moss overnights. David Kline did PM drive. Interesting because David Kline is now Creative Director at Chandler/Woolley Advertising owned by my wife Jodie.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Elton John appears on TV as the piano player on T-Rex's 1972 tune Bang a Gong (Get It On). Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman of the Turtles sing back up. Tyrannosaurus Rex lead singer Marc Bolan (Mark Feld aka Mark Bowland) dies in an auto accident on September 16, 1977.
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Subject: Heads Up-date. Jim: Just learned of death today (7/15) of Hank Cochran in Hendersonville, TN @ 74. The consummate songwriter of dozens of hit songs had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer; he is known for the many songs he co-wrote or authored, including 1965's "Make The World Go Away. The list is nearly endless. He was inducted into Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, as well as Miss. State Musicians Hall & once was married to singer Jeannie Seely. Bob & Sonny Lee
