COLUMBUS DJ DROWNS Popular afternoon host and Program Director of Columbus, OH WWCD FM (CD 101.1) John Andrew Andyman Davis drowns on Sunday, July 18, 2010 while on a family get together at Outland's Long Lake Resort in Michigan. For years John takes his wife and sons to the resort. Davis drowns while swimming in Long Lake in the Manistee National Forest in northwest Michigan. Andy's brother-in-law who is a Columbus paramedic gives him CPR for 20 minutes but he does not respond. Mason County undersheriff Tom Trenner says My understanding was that he loved swimming and was a halfway decent swimmer. I don't have any concrete evidence, but speculation is that he has a medical problem such as a heart attack. Davis' survivors include his wife Molly and their three sons Johnny (10), Oliver (3) and Sammy who is born this year.

ANOTHER SMOOTH JAZZ IS DUST IN THE WIND KOCD FM Smooth Jazz (CD 103.7) Okemah, OK which shoots a rimshot signal to Oklahoma City and portions of Tulsa flips its lid to AC as Oklahoma’s 103.7. KOCD FM billboards itself as The New Version of FM and Building The Playlist You Always Wanted. Broadcast Architecture’s Smooth Jazz Network syndicated radio hosts bite the dust in favor of a local airstaff. Sounds like a win-win situation to bring back local programming to radio's airwaves.
TRIVIA QUESTION: Who is San Jose, CA Rock group the Doobie Brothers original lead singer? The answer appears below.
JIM PREWITT [Catfish] (Sacramento, CA) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#844) July 19, 2010 [Monday] Jim, Reading in JRRR Michael O'Shea and others stories about KLIF. Not that I would ever put myself in that group of talent but one of my stories is being on the air when Elvis died. It was about 10:30 in the morning and Of course with those big KLIF news bulletin intros The newsman broke in and announced Elvis was dead. The phones immediately lit up. I played Elvis songs and took calls all morning. Another thing I remember when I did 10p-2a late nights on KLIF each jock had his own newsman. Mine was Ch.5 KXAS News Anchor Mike Snider. Two newscasts an hour with jock/newsman banter out of news regularly. Also news when it happens break ins from the KLIF mobile unit. All this going on between 10-2 AT NIGHT! Those were the days! GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Subject: "Bones" Grant and other things. July 18th; Sorry to hear about Ken "Bones" Grant. He was one of the softest spoken men I ever worked with. Even though Dave Morris went through several PD's and operation managers, Ken was always a guy you could talk with he would listen. He was never actually my boss, as Dave made all the decisions about budget, talent etc. but Ken would always explain some of the things Morris would do. I spent five years as News and Sports Director at KNUZ/KQUE and he and Buddy McGregor had convinced Dave the stations needed to emphasize more sports as well as news. That was why I was hired from KRLD-TV in Dallas. I replaced Dave Ward who went from radio to television. I convinced Buddy and Dave it would be good station PR to let me do the Houston Mavericks games after Slater Martin called me and asked me to do the play-by-play for the new ABA team. We didn't do play by play on KNUZ. He allowed me to do the games on a station I think was KXYZ. I lasted over five years at KNUZ and some of the experiences were good and a few were bad. It was great working with Joe Ford, Jerry Mueller, Paul Berlin and others. When Larry Wilson, the program director, started writing scathing memos to the news staff, I went to Morris and told him it had to stop. He backed Larry saying he was PD although I had equal status. I resigned the next day although Morris tried to talk me out of it. Not long after that, they had a new PD. Dave told me years later that he had made a mistake in letting me go but I told him I wasn't sorry and wasn't upset with him. He had also allowed me to do five years of the PA at the Dome for the Oilers and Astros and everything else that took place in the Hofheinz hacienda. But that was to supplement my income because he was tighter than Rosie O’Donnell’s panty hose. Just a memory from out of the past. Gary D. (www.garydnews.com)

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: KBUY 1540. Greetings Jim & Lacy, I posted a similar note to this on the DFW Radio Discussion Board & had some wonderful responses. I'm interested in any stories, memories, technical info, etc that anyone would like to share about KBUY (KCUL, etc) 1540 Ft. Worth. It was a station that I enjoyed listening to growing up. Their 50kw day pattern was loud & clear in Oak Cliff, fairly strong in Garland. Night pattern didn't hit Dallas Co. at all. But during daylight hours it was great to listen to. Lots of well known radio people worked there. Jay Weaver has fond memories of the place. Would enjoy hearing any recollections that anyone (employees or listeners) would like to share. Take Care, David Faulkner
MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX) Subject: Vacation. Jim, I'm leaving Wednesday for my annual summer stay in Italy. Would you put the newsletter e-mails on "vacation hold" for me until September 22? I'll have limited computer access in Italy so I can read JRRR from there. Thanks, Mike
TRIVIA ANSWER: Tom Johnston is the Doobie Brothers original lead singer as well as guitar and keyboard player.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: Summertime Is Here. Hi, I always liked Ice Cream Man by John Brim after hearing it. Also a song for out swimming at a pool party, Double Shot, not sure that is the real title, that I still think of hearing before the News would come on. Also Grazing In the Grass make up my list of songs for the summer.
SWINGIN' MEDALLIONS have the #17 tune Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love) in summer 1966. Two different forms of Grazing In the Grass make the charts. South African trumpeter/band leader Hugh Masekela's version in summer 1968 rises to #1 and remains there for 2 weeks. It sells over a half million copies. Los Angeles, CA R&B vocal group Friends of Distinction bring the song back in summer 1969 which lands at #3 on Billboard. It, too, sells over a half million copies.
FAITH HILL (September 21, 1967-p) [Sunshine and Summertime #7-2006] Hey that's the way we like it. Good times, sunshine and summertime.
Jim Rose and Lacy
