ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

KLIF DALLAS DUO DONS NEW PD Paul Duckworth, radio programming vet, is the new PD of Cumulus News/Talk KLIF-570 and clustermate CHR KLIF FM (i93) Dallas, TX. Paul succeeds the late Steve Nicholl who dies suddenly in May 2010 after an apparent heart attack. Duckworth tells NTS MediaOnline Today, I’m excited about the opportunities ahead. These are legendary call letters, we’ve got some key pieces in place, and I am thrilled to join the folks at Cumulus. KLIF-570 is originally WFAA-570 since its inception. When the original KLIF-1190 drops its legendary call letters WFAA quickly scoops them up. Ironically, from 1967-68 I'm a DJ on 50,000 watt clear channel WFAA-820 M-F and on 5,000 watt WFAA-570 on Sunday afternoons. In 1972, I'm a newscaster on KLIF-1190. These call letter switch-a-roos destroy radio history plus it's mighty confusing to keep up with who's who and what's what. Paul comes to KLIF-570 from his stint as PD at WMAL-630 Washington, DC. Also in his radio resume are KPAM Portland, OR; KOMO-1000 and KVI-570 Seattle, WA and WDBO Orlando, FL.

BROADCASTING & CABLE YEARBOOK
formerly the Broadcasting Yearbook is a major institution in the broadcast industry since probably before WWII ceases publication with the 2010 issue. Guess that free online access to most of its data replaces the $395 reference book. Can remember paying I believe $25 each for the annual issues in the mid 1960s. Somewhere inside boxes are my copies of the 1965 and 1966 issues. Sure love to have a copy of any issue of Broadcast Yearbook because it is so helpful. Another piece of radio history evaporates right before our eyes.

CONNELL MILLER (Bella Vista, AR) Subject: "Grazing in the Grass". Hi Jim, In JRRR #845 you mentioned the Friends of Distinction's version of Grazing in the Grass. The arranger and conductor (and long-time RCA employee) for that song was Ray Cork. Ray, nice guy and a great musician, is now retired from the LA music scene and living here in Bella Vista, where he occasionally plays in a local big band. My wife and I see Ray and his wife Gilda occasionally, and we trade emails quite often. I'll have to let him know of your mention of his big hit from 1969. Take care...Connell Miller

DAN MURPHY [Daniel] (Providence-Warwick, RI) Subject: DJ passes, request for subscription. I just stumbled into your site while searching for info on a former Providence, RI DJ, whose name came up while another favorite of days gone by was being remembered on Facebook, where one thing leads to another... The FB thread started when a friend noted that John A. Manzi, broadcasting under the name Andy Jackson and from that the nickname Big Ange, had died. The news report in The Providence Journal is here: www.projo.com/news/content/MANZI_OBIT_07-20-10_AOJ8NRN_v9.16839fb.html And please sign me up for an online subscription at danmurphyvet@hotmail.com. I like what I see, and radio for me was a lifeline to the greatest time in my life. DAN MURPHY [occasionally known as O.B. Dan, Dan From Oakland Beach, and DanVVArider]

MIKE MARSHALL (Houston, TX)
Subject: Mike Marshall commented on your Facebook photo: Jim, if you remember the cart machines at WFAA were on the right at waist level. When you were facing the mic, you couldn't (see) them and it was a mental challenge to remember what you had had loaded where.

MIKE IS CORRECT. Forget all about that cart machine catastrophe at WFAA. But I'm still young in radio and do not pay it much attention because just a couple of years before WFAA I'm on KASO-1240 in early 1965 in Minden, LA where we have zero cart machines. We read all of our commercials live. But we ad-lib the Beall's department store spot from full page newspaper ads. Crinkle, crinkle, crinkle. About a month after I arrive, the KASO co-owner/GM buys one record/playback cart machine for the control room. At my 2nd radio station KTER-1570 in Terrell, TX our production room begins to not produce plus our 2 Collins cart machines run through the cue tones. So, it's back to reading all of the ads live. It's not until my 3rd radio station the magnificent KHFI FM in Austin, TX that I am on a real radio station with a full complete staff. The 1st two radio stations have no news departments or even a receptionist. KHFI FM is in a modern 2-story building along with sister stations KHFI-970 and KHFI TV 42. Really great place to be with real radio pros. The 3rd radio station KPCN-730 in Dallas, TX is well equipped too but much smaller building and staff. So, WFAA-820/570 in 1967 in Big D is just my 4th radio station in less than two years time.

MIKE MCHENRY (San Saba, TX) Subject: Ken Grant funeral. On behalf of Doris and the rest of Ken’s family, thank you for the kind and thoughtful emails and cards. We especially thank Mike Marshall, Chuck Joseph, Arch Yancey, Ladd Bednar and other KNUZ/KQUE associates, past and present, who attended his funeral yesterday in Houston. Your presence, reminisces and comments were greatly appreciated. God Bless. Mike and Lynn (Grant) McHenry

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX)
Greetings Jim & Lacy! Enjoy the birthday announcements in your newsletters. You must keep a birthday calendar. "I Walk The Line" by Johnny Cash hits # 1 in the week of July 21st 1956. (Newsletter 845) Awhile back in a couple of your newsletters there was some discussion about Johnny Paycheck's name & was it possibly a play on Johnny Cash's. (I have no idea if it was or not.) Johnny Cash's popularity at the time was mentioned. A thought that's been stuck in my head is that during the height of his career (mid to late 1950's thru early to mid 1970's) Johnny Cash could've sang the phonebook & had a gold record. Looking the other day I saw that he had 105 songs make it into the Top 40 of the Billboard Country Charts. He was a good man. I've long been a fan of his & also of his daughter Rosanne. Take Care, David.

TRIVIA ANSWER: In 1971, Simon & Garfunkel's 5th and final record album Bridge Over Troubled Water wins the Grammy Record of the Year and Song of the Year plus 4 more Grammy Awards. The album is #1 both in the USA and Australia.

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) I was working at KDSX, Sherman & Denison in the early seventies. Early one afternoon, the program director, the late K.B. Lorance, came by the production booth and said something about a tornado being less than a mile away. I didn’t have much experience with twisters, but knew I didn’t want to be in one’s way, so I made a beeline for the transmitter room, which was reinforced, thinking I’d be safe there. After about five minutes, Lorance poked his head in, asked what I was doing, and I told him hiding from the tornado. He got me to go out to the front porch of the station, to see that the tornado was headed away from KDSX, and then said: "The time to hide from one of those things is when it’s headed TOWARD you, not AWAY from you!" I was embarrassed, but a lot smarter about tornados after that. John Hale; Mobile Magic Music (33.Music) "We're at the best parties!"

JAY LENO (April 28, 1950-p) As you know, Hurricane Rita is headed toward Florida, Texas and Louisiana. Another hurricane! It’s like the ninth hurricane this season. Maybe this is not a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance
