ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

CLASSICAL MUSIC HOST PASSES INTO THE NIGHT For 55 years, Ralph Schoenleben hosts Sunday Evening Concert on Bliss Communications News-Talk WRJN-1400 in Racine, WI. Ralph operates a record store downtown for many years. When he reaches 89 he closes the store but carries on his rare recording endeavor online afterwards. Schoenleben is multi-talented. He is a member of ASCAP and is a music composer since he is 18. Ralph has not been in the studio to host his Classical music show since December 2009. But WRJN-1400 continues to air the Best of Ralph Schoenleben weekly. The Racine Journal-Times says that Ralph Schoenleben dies at 94 on Monday, July 19, 2010. JRRR expresses our sincere sorrow for his family, friends and many listeners.

THE TV TIMES THEY ARE A CHANGIN'
Due to our country's economic situation TV stations lay off TV anchors and cancel newscasts to save money for the bean counters but this also chases viewers away to other means for their daily news hungers. The once-proud media company Tribune Broadcasting's CEO Randy McMichaels, who is a former radio executive, comes up with a better idea that he calls NewsFix. This new experimental news plan involves the elimination of TV anchors and newscasts. On the local scene here in Houston, TX KIAH TV CH39 reverses its ad campaign that begins in 2009 which promotes its news anchor Mia Gradney. When CH39 launches NewsFix in fall 2010 it ends its on-camera TV anchors and reporters to instead place emphasis on natural sound and video to tell stories. JRRR believes that this sounds like something right out of Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Magic show. KIAH TV's GM Roger Bare declares that KIAH will be the pilot program for Tribune Broadcasting's NewsFix, which is expected to launch in late September or early October.

TRIVIA QUESTION: The Drew Carey TV Show (2nd season) uses Five O'Clock World as their theme song. What Pop group has the tune's hit single in 1966?

JOHN SUMMERS (Los Angeles, CA)
Subject: WEZO/Augusta, Ga.--Summers. Jim, Thought you might want to alert fellow broadcasters to my latest project which I bought mid-June & retooled, a full time thousand watter...Augusta's Easy 1230, WEZO...launched July first with a music library of nearly 4,000 cuts & growing! The audience I find is starving for '...all the good stuff...' they haven't had an opportunity to hear on the radio in years. Getting tremendous response in this beautiful Southern city, up against the two 800 pound gorillas in the room, Clear Channel & Beasley Broadcasting. Our website's: http://wezo.am/ It's getting to be a very popular place on the internet as we have thousands listening to our stream. Cheers... John Summers; Los Angeles

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR)
Subject: Sorry it's taken so long...Jim, Love the favorite summer songs idea. Having been raised mostly outside of Dallas until my senior year in Dallas, but always being a fan of KLIF (1190) and having worked there, one of my favorites is: Summer Breeze. In CA listened to American Bandstand, of course, while in the LA area. After moving near Modesto, we listened to Wolfman Jack at night...hard to limit my favorites. Love Lemon Tree, Summer Summer, Summer Wind. Who couldn't love Theme From A Summer Place?!? And, Mother-In-Law by Ernie K. Doe was a big-time favorite while driving around in all the beautiful cars in the Modesto area with everyone rocking the car to do a funny thing that was "the thing" as a teenager there. Spent nearly 3 years in Panama City, Panama and the Panama Canal Zone in the late 60's where I listened to "Guantamera" and "The Girl from Ipanema" played from an album by Ferrante & Teicher. JC

CHUCK BLORE (Los Angeles-Encino, CA) Subject: Summertime. I dunno. How about; 'In The Summertime, when all the trees and leaves are green...' you know the rest. It's only 96 today in Encino. What a relief. Chuck

BOBBY COPELAND (Oak Ridge, TN) Subject: Chubby Checker. Chubby Checker recently appeared here (Oak Ridge, TN). He looked great (much younger than his years) and put on a terrific show. Perhaps your readers would like to check out his bio. (www.chubbychecker.com/bio.asp)

DENISE SCHMIDY
(DFW-N Richland Hills, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose. Is that you Jim Rose from Grand Rapids MI? I may have found who my pal Mike Ray is looking for….Please reply. Am looking for a dear friend from my Collage days. I've lost track of him some 30 years ago. Does anyone know the where abouts of Jim Rose. He performed in many of the school plays at Grand Rapids Baptist Collage. Any info on him would be most helpful. Denise Schmidt; Konica Minolta Graphic Imaging, USA

GRAND RAPIDS, MI is not in my radio resume but most of TX biggest and best plus a couple of its worst radio stations are there. Some are awesome broadcast outlets but others are not quite so groovy. Over the years I discover that all across America there are a handful of Jim Roses in radio but as far as I know I am the only real Jim Rose on the airwaves. It says so on my birth certificate. Yes, I do have a birth certificate.

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: Hall of Fame, etc. Greetings Jim, Hope that you & Lacy are both doing well. Sorry that you didn't make it into the Hall of Fame this year. I would like to be one of the first to nominate you when the nominating for 2011 begins. Using the emails (JRRR) you've sent me, I should be able to write a good one. Bob Grant Issue 847: Was that lady sellin' those signs? How much are they? Take Care, David Faulkner; Dallas, TX

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Subject: Four Chords. A friend of mine is a guitar instructor. One of his students got tired of playing in 3 chords (1-4-5 songs) so he found a guitar teacher down in Deep Ellum in Dallas. The old blues man asked him why he was changing instructors. "Because he only lets me play in 3 chords." The blues man said "Three kawds? Lawd have mercy. Lemme axe you sumpn' son. Whachoo gonna do with them other 2 kawds?" The kid went back to Joe and took lessons for about 2 more years. Jeff Cunningham, DC Kyle, TX

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Vogues Five O'Clock World lands at #4 around Christmas 1966. It's the theme song for 2nd season of The Drew Carey TV Show.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas-Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: When Radio Was. Hi, I like Mike Shannon's page about History Of Dallas Broadcasting. But since I am on the fringe, about a mile from where Mesquite starts, looking for stations I still recall KGGC 89.7 with an Underground Format. I thought it was cool since I liked it better than KNUS and almost as much as KFAD. I was not sure I was going to graduate, can anything good come from Samuel High School anyway? But I put on my choices for college ETSU, WTSU, and Grayson Community College. Anyway on the SAT or whatever it was, I was accepted to the Social Science Department. I went to East Texas State University planning to be the next Hemingway. Well one can dream can't they? I put as a choice Grayson Community College because of having been hearing KGCC. I visited a church, Sunday and there was some one who I use to work in the grocery business with, I thought I was where no one would know me. Makes me realize that Darkness and Light are the same to God. Like when asking for IDs. I was told better to over ID on the radio than under ID. Charles, KC5RAI

ROBERT MILLIKAN [American physicist and Nobel Prize winner - 1923] The radio craze will die out in time.
