ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

MAJOR SHAKEUP AT THE ALPHABET NETWORK
The ABC Entertainment Group asks its President, Stephen McPherson, to resign. Stephen, who is on vacation, is supposed to return to the office on Monday but when he is not there by Tuesday rumors begin to fly about his possible departure. McPherson issues a statement: I want to thank the wonderful team of individuals who have worked with me throughout my time here and wish them nothing but the best. Paul Lee, President of ABC Family cable TV, is Stephen's replacement. Insiders say that this is no surprise because in 2009 under Paul, ABC Family TV is on a roll with hot new shows Pretty Little Liars and Huge. ABC Entertainment hopes to attract ABC Family TV's young demographics. McPherson oversees ABC Entertainment as its President since 2004. In January 2009, ABC expands his role to be in charge of both the ABC Entertainment programming and ABC Studios. Also, talk is that McPherson often clashes with Disney/ABC TV Group honcho Anne Sweeney. Their disagreements appear to smooth out but industry watchers expect their turmoil eventually causes McPherson's exit from ABC. And the beat goes on.

CRESCENT CITY MAKES CHANGES
On Friday, July 23, 2010 Citadel flips Hot AC WDVW FM (92.3) New Orleans, LA to Modern Rock with new call letters, WRKN. Jason Ginty is the new Program Director. Stacey Brady is its Music Director. Jason also remains PD of Rock KRDJ FM (Acadiana's Classic Rock Station 93.7) in nearby Lafayette-New Iberia, LA. Ginty brags: New Orleans has been craving a REAL Alternative Rock station for years now. We couldn’t be more pumped about being able to bring rock back to the Crescent City and fill a much needed void in the market.

BEATLES' PIANO FOR SALE A coffee-stained upright piano that the Beatles use to record Paperback Writer, Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da and Tomorrow Never Knows goes on the auction block. Experts expect its price to exceed $300,000. The Challen upright piano is part of the Abbey Road studios in London. Abbey Road buys the piano in 1964. Its legend extends past the Beatles because Pink Floyd also plays it on their Wish You Were Here album. The piano is used in Abbey Road's smallest workshop, Studio III. But Abbey Road retires the piano in 1980. Its current owner has it on the auction block at a Bonhams auction at Goodwood in West Sussex scheduled for August 15, 2010. Also included in the sale are copies of The Beatles Book magazine that features pictures of Paul McCartney at the piano.

TRIVIA QUESTION: Which song wins a Grammy for Best Rock and Roll Recording in 1965: I Want to Hold Your Hand (Beatles), House of the Rising Sun (Animals) or Downtown (Petula Clark)?

BILLY PARKER (Tulsa, OK) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#844) July 19, 2010 [Monday] hello jim: as always you are on top of the biz. I appreciate your knowledge and caring. however I am no longer associated with kvoo/kxbl/kfaq, due to my retirement. CHUCK CASHMERE (San Diego, CA) Subject: Dizzie Lizzie. A few columns back Dizzie Lizzie was mentioned. She was one of a kind. I was listening to a Micky Newbury CD yesterday and remembered he had a song by that title. Upon listening I know he'd written it about her..."I was just a kid of seventeen". That song is about a real event. I remember we used to listen to the R&B station of which there was two. One was downtown and the other was a few blocks from KNUZ. Mickey was a really cool kid and keep up with whatever was happening. A lot of parents didn't want their kids listening to R&B (or race music). Dizzie was a white lady who was married to ole time producer and Elvis's local contact Gabe Tucker. She could talk the jive in those days. She was also the only DJ to play my first record Please Be Sincere. She should be in the Texas DJ Hall of Fame.

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AK) I remember Joe Salvador from listening to him but I don't think I ever met him. He was at WFAA when I returned from the Panama Canal Zone. JC

GRADY PRICE BLOUNT (San Angelo, TX)
Hi Jim: Not real sure how I found your website??? I was sharing some emails today with a former radio compadre and...of yeah...we were trying to figure out who had DIED and I Googled one of my former bosses hoping to find an obituary. Instead, a note from him came up on your website, so that was how I found you. Looking forward to reading your screes. -Grady Price Blount, Ph.D.; Dean, College of Sciences; Angelo State University

TRIVIA ANSWER: Downtown by Petula Clark wins the Best Rock and Roll Recording Grammy in 1965. At my first radio DJ position in 1965 on KASO-1240 in Shreveport-Minden, LA a teenage boy and girl call in to request that song almost every night. They tell me that when they hear Downtown on my radio show it's their cue to meet in beautiful downtown Minden. Guess that I serve as their Quicksilver messenger service.

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman, TX) ...Jim, re: <<When CH39 launches NewsFix in fall 2010 it ends its on-camera TV anchors and reporters to instead place emphasis on natural sound and video to tell stories.>> WOW...further proof that nuttin' is new...this 'NewsFix' approach sounds exactly like the old WBAP-TV (Channel 5) late night 'Texas News'...no talking heads, just film galore with narration; pretty well covered most everything that moved in North Texas, with some footage sent in by other outlets around the state. I always enjoyed 'The Texas News' due to the wall-to-wall actualities. I always left the show thinking, "Well, there ya go...I've just seen everything that's happened around town today." I remember Cary Sims, one of the Ch. 5 filmsters at the time, telling me the way they 'edited in the camera' in order to conserve film and maintain continuity/story flow, so the editors essentially processed the film and would be able run the stories with very little additional editing, if any. The show ran during the later '60s, and if I recall correctly until the mid '70s. Any JRRR reader with correct broadcast years, please correct my dates. Film of the 'Texas News' show opener can be seen at:
