ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

CHANNEL 5'S CUTS RUN DEEP
London, England's Channel Five TV operation has a new sheriff in town. Of the UK terrestrials, an advertising slow-down hits the TV station the hardest. Its new owner Richard Desmond plans huge cut-backs for the TV channel that he buys from RTL in July 2010. Many insiders describe the coming sequences as a bloodbath. Channel Five's staff learns their fate at 10 am on Wednesday, August 11, 2010. Most of the senior management team leaves the building as the economy hands pink slips to more than a quarter of its staff. CEO/Chairman Dawn Airey quits for a new but yet unknown position at Five's old owner, RTL. Richard Woolfe, incumbent program honcho, exits. Jeff Ford moves on up to director of programs. Of the existing nine board directors, only two remain: Ford and sales director Kelly Williams. Desmond intends to ax up to 80 out of a total of 300 staff members. He anticipates a savings of £20 million ($31 million) with these drastic moves. Richard who is a print mogul makes his fortune from pornography, expects to invest about £300 million ($472 million) annually in Channel Five over the next five years.

NEWS CORPORATION UNLOADS CHINESE TVS
After years of difficulty in the market, Rupert Murdoch's News Corp announces on Monday, August 9, 2010 that it releases control of its three Chinese TV channels to a fund that is backed by China's #2 media company. Private equity fund China Media Capital acquires a controlling interest in News Corporation’s Xing Kong, Xing Kong International, Channel V Mainland China and its Fortune Star Chinese movie library. Established in 2009, China Media Capital is a private equity fund with 5 billion Yuan ($739 million) in assets and a focus on investments in the media industry. Vivek Couto, media analyst with Media Partners Asia, says the three channels combined generate no more than $50 million in revenue annually at the time of the deal.

FRIDAY THE 13TH Well, it's time for radio stations and businesses to roll out their Friday the 13th promotions. Anything for a promotion. Right? How often do these remarkable coincidences occur? Any month's 13th day falls on a Friday if the month begins on a Sunday. In the superstition world, Friday the 13th is a day of bad luck. But every Friday is wonderful no matter what day of the month it may be. TGIF is a motto of a lot of us humanoids because we look forward to weekends of joy. The fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia. If we say that word five times in a row fast, we become discombobulated. We hope that your Friday the 13th is one of the best days of your life.

JIM ZIMMERMAN [James-MPD] (Washington, DC) Good morning: Jim. Nice to hear from you, am in the Washington DC area. I was a cannon cocker, can't hear too much now (lol) Those DJ’s were on at midnights up and down the east coast and WV, where Buddy Ray was on Radio Station WWVA in Wheeling, WV Larry James and Tom Miller at WBT in Charlotte, NC, Charlie Douglas on the road gang show out of NO, LA. I bet Bill Mack knows these guys. When I was a kid growing up I wanted to be a DJ, but the Marines called me in 1968 and the next 30yrs I made history with the Marines. Take Care and keep in touch by e-mail. Jim

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Hi, Jim and Lacy, One of the main reasons I get such a kick outta connecting with you is although we're some years apart in age, (I'll be 78 in just over a month) we've covered some of the same territory geographically and professionally. When I was a kid living in the Big Thicket, WFAA and WBAP were THE stations we listened to because their signals were strongest. We didn't have electricity, so the old battery operated radio we had, with wire strung out among the pine trees to pick up a signal, would only get certain stations. My father was a fan of the Stamps Quartet and the Light Crust Doughboys, and we usually could get them tuned in on one of those super stations. So it was only natural for me as a young pro to wanna gravitate toward one of those stations. You made it, so I'm somewhat jealous. But I remember the cavernous studios you mention at WFAA, and being somewhat intimidated (or maybe turned off) by them. Also, after the Navy, and my stint as an electrician at the Lone Star Steel mill, I moved back to Arlington and began working at a tiny daytimer in Fort Worth. My station of choice then was KLIF (1190). You also spent time there. Then, after a couple more years I moved to UT and worked at KVET (1300), another of your stops...if only briefly, etc., then Seguin, and on to San Antonio. I think you covered all of those bases, plus a h****** lot more, a few years later. Anyway, it's a pleasure hearing your stories. Tom

SAM LEE [Walter] (Beverly Hills, CA) Subject: Some real sad news. When my daughter, Samantha, passed Syd (Small) was there for me and my family. He loaned me all of the funds I needed to move my family from Texas to New York. And he did it without me asking, and put no conditions on repayment. I will always remember his kindness. Thanks, Bro: Peace & Blessings, Sam Lee, KLIF (1190) News; The Zeitgeist Corporation; Beverly Hills, CA (www.ZeitgeistCorp.org)

JIM BELL (Lufkin, TX)
Subject: Howard Stern and NRHOF. Hey Jim, I've always thought induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame should be reserved for people who've made positive and lasting contributions to the field of radio broadcasting. Speaking just for myself, the only thing Howard Stern will be remembered for was dragging the radio business down into the sewer. The fact that he and the imitators he inspires make millions of dollars a year putting filth on the air says everything that needs to be said about the sad state of 21st century radio in this country. Jim Bell; Public Radio News Broadcaster (Retired); Lufkin

LYNN WOOLLEY (Waco-Killeen-Temple, TX) Clint (Formby) owned the station (KTEM-1400) while you were there (1973) having bought it from Frank Mayborn. I worked at WACO (1460) and cried when I heard it was leaving Waco (KCLE-1460 Ft. Worth-Burleson, TX). Chaney (KTEM-1400 GM) worked for Formby. I only missed you because I was at UT working at KNOW (1490). (Ed) Brandon hired me at KTAP 970...PM drive jock at KTAP...1971. I had just gotten to UT. Both at KNOW at various times.
