ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

NASHVILLE LEGEND ENDS HIS QUEST George Richey, songwriter, producer, publisher and manager dies of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at 74 on July 31, 2010. George is the husband of the late Country Music Hall of Fame singer Tammy Wynette. Richey is born George Richardson on November 30 1935 in Promise Land, AR. He co-writes Classic Country tunes by artists such as Tammy Wynette and George Jones. George produces records for Wynette, Merle Haggard, Johnny Horton, Wanda Jackson and many others. He aids in the creation of one of my all time favorite songs, Tammy Wynette’s Til I Can Make It on My Own along with George Jones’ (A Picture of Me) Without You and The Grand Tour. As a session musician, he works on recordings by Ringo Starr, Marty Robbins and Lefty Frizzell. In recent years, he devotes his time to educate others about the dangers of smoking. Richey also aides the Country Music Hall of Fame in developing the Tammy Wynette: First Lady of Country Music exhibit that opens on Friday, August 20, 2010. George Richey's survivors include his wife, Sheila Richey; daughters Tatum and Deirdre and son Kelly plus several relatives and friends.

DR. LAURA IS THE NEW DON IMUS
These days a new term - political correctness - takes over our vocabulary and strikes down our Fifth Amendment rights. We're like a bunch of children in a rompus room. Provocateurs bring down Don Imus from MSNBC TV because of his words about the players on the Rutgers University women's basketball team on his radio show. His talk program on WFAN-660 NYC loses its sponsors due to a backlash from agitators. The latest to give in to anti-First Amendment combatants is Dr. Laura Schlessinger whose Talk Radio Network program airs on almost 200 radio stations across America. During a telephone conversation on her radio show Dr. Laura uses the - here we go again - N word. Like Don Imus, Schlessinger apologizes for her usage of that dreaded pronouncement to try to quell the rabble-rousers. But the real reason behind their fracas is to bring down a popular talk show host who is not politically correct. So, on Tuesday night, August 17, 2010 on CNN’s Larry King Live she declares that her radio career ends after 17 years when her contract expires. At the end of the year, when my contract runs out, I’ve decided not to do a radio show anymore. I want my First Amendment rights back, which I can’t have on radio, without the threat of attack on my advertisers and stations. JRRR predicts that Dr. Laura heads to satellite radio where there are no Fifth Amendment constraints or restrictions.

GIOVANNI LUCA FABRIS (Vicenza-Thiene, Italy) Subject: Elvis Presley and Tex Hendrick. Hi Jim, How are you? This is Fabris G. Luca, Italy. Still searching on early Elvis. I'm now trying to gather info on a DJ or TV personality (or said to be) from Texas (around Tyler) called Don 'Tex' Hendrick...Pic enclosed. Have you ever heard of him?? Hope to hear from you soon. Sincerely yours, Luca

JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) I remember exactly where I was when Elvis died. [Part I] On our way back to Seminole (TX) I was enjoying the new GM talking on a CB because he was a quiet man until we broke him in at the station in Dallas. The young announcer came back to the CB and told Paul it had just come across the AP that Elvis had died and what should he do. Paul told him to play everything they had of Elvis and just make the simple announcement until we got back. I still have a copy of that AP announcement. I had left instructions that I was not to be bothered for any reason unless lightning struck the tower. The moment I walked into my parents’ house, I was greeted with, "Lightning struck the tower at Cedar Hill and no one knows what to do." After a quick call to tell them I would get in touch with the VP of Radio and locate our Chief Engineer, and there was basically nothing they could do except do whatever needed to be done around the station as they normally would, then everyone go home except the person who would normally be on the air, I drove back to Dallas as fast as I could. The local engineer had tried to tell them that basically there was nothing anyone could do until the tower was repaired. Joyce "JC" Webster

JEFF THOMPSON (Winston-Salem, NC) Yes, Jim, I certainly DO remember where I was on August 16th, 1977. (Part I) I was reporting the news of the day on NBC Radio Network at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, where I broke the bulletin on the air that Elvis had died. We were shocked... and unprepared for that! Nobody had an obituary ready for Elvis's passing (as is usually the case for elder celebrities including everything but the date and cause of death). So after putting the simple fact out to the world, I jumped the elevator down to WNBC Radio local on the 3rd floor, where my friend and fellow broadcaster Norm N. Nite worked. I knew, even if he was not on duty, there would be a copy of his famous book "Rock On" about all the stars of Rock & Roll. *(Norm, native of Cleveland, is one of the founders of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.) Got it, zipped back up to the 5th floor. Wrote the obit, put it on the air, then did a feed to the BBC about the King's demise. When I came out of the studio, my producer handed me an airline ticket and said, "Here, you're going to Memphis". But, just thought you'd like to know, Jim, for the record how it came down that day at NBC. - Jeff Thompson (Part II in the Friday issue of JRRR)

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX)
Subject: Elvis' Death Issue #856. Greetings Jim & Lacy! It's easy for me to remember the anniversary of Elvis death. It falls on one of my best friend's birthday. Two of my favorite Elvis tunes are: Marie's The Name (1961) & If I Can Dream (1968), saw an Elvis impersonator perform If I Can Dream at Chip Moody's funeral in 2001. (Many will already know that was done per Chip's request, he loved Elvis impersonators & would do an Elvis impersonation himself.) Take Care, David Faulkner

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX)
Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#857) August 18, 2010 [Wednesday] Jim, I’m really sorry to hear that Cuzzin Lennie is so ill. I remember working at KDSX up in Grayson county in the early seventies, and driving down to Dallas occasionally for a night on the town. Listening to Lennie was required…he was about the coolest thing on radio at night in Dallas back in the day. I listened to Mike Selden in afternoon drive, and the rest of the time, I listened to KNUS. I wasn’t even in the conversation with the guys working at those stations, but it sure gave me something to shoot for, and a reason to spend countless hours taping and critiquing myself. It’s a real shame that the only way anyone can hear DJ’s that good anymore is by going to websites that feature air checks from years gone by. I spend a lot of time on Airchexx.com. Yours Truly, John Hale; Mobile Magic Music "We're at the best parties!"

TRIVIA ANSWER: Lee Ann Womack's favorite TV show is Andy Griffith.

JERRY HEILMAN (Nacogdoches, TX) Subject: ACM show. A little touch of Country music/radio trivia here. Lee Ann Womack's father is Aubrey Womack. He was a teacher at Jacksonville (TX) Junior High for many years, and worked summers at Dudley Waller's KEBE/KOOI there. Great guy, and he and his wife did a good job raising their daughter. Last I heard, he was working as part of Lee Ann's management team.

BOB HOPE (May 29, 1903-July 27, 2003) When she started to play, Steinway came down personally and rubbed his name off the piano.
