EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL JOYCE WEBSTER [J.C.] (Mena, AR) I remember exactly where I was when Elvis died. [Part II] I had driven out to Seminole, TX to visit a friend who was managing his first radio station on a very rare vacation away from the station. (I had taken my kids to my parents in Graham and was going to come back and spend a few days with them.) Paul's entire staff except for a young boy was so excited about going to see Jim Drury in theater in the round at Odessa and they were going in a two car caravan. I had tried to warn Paul that he wasn't a nice guy. I helped a young news intern at KLIF interview him at a nearby bar/restaurant when I was at KLIF (1190) while a/c was out in the production room. That was my very first interview of anyone and she was floundering just because he acted like a star. I knew he was a jerk when I asked what he thought about his first visit to Texas, and he said, "You can't get a decent shoeshine or cigar in Texas." Joyce "JC" Webster Jim Rose and Lacy
CNN PUTS ITS KING ON HOLD In July 2010, CNN's Larry King Live talk host proclaims his retirement after 25 years by way of a Tweet, I'm ending my nightly show this fall but continuing at CNN. Larry's retirement begins in fall 2010. CNN says wait just a minute! America's Got Talent judge Piers Morgan is the front-runner for King's replacement and they are very close to signing the dotted line. But there is a problem. There are scheduling conflicts with Piers' talent deal with NBC's The Celebrity Apprentice plus he keeps his judging duties with America's Got Talent for the remainder of his contract. These minute items present interesting scheduling conflicts for CNN's live versions of the Larry King Live show. Many American citizens are out of work but Piers Morgan has more jobs than he can perform. CNN asks Larry King if he will put on hold his vanishing act until scheduling difficulties with Piers Morgan's other duties can be worked out.

MIKE HARTMAN (Ft. Worth-Joshua, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#858) August 20, 2010 [Friday] Hey, Jim...Mike Ray Hartman here. I'm a little late on comments about the 33rd anniversary of Elvis' death...but, here goes. It was on a Tuesday (Aug. 16), and I was working 2nd shift in Dallas. My wife and I had been married for only 2 years...33 now. She called me at work and told me. I thought she was kidding at first. I got permission to take the remainder of the shift off. By the time I got home, Geraldo Rivera had already put together a brief tribute to Elvis. He aired it about 9:30pm or 10:30pm. As you know, I sing for a living. I started this rather late in life...at age 54. I specialize in 50's and early 60's Rock and Rock. I have over an hour of Elvis songs memorized. This time of year I usually do my own personal Elvis tribute...My "Tribute Without a Jumpsuit". When I finish singing an early Elvis song, like "That's Alright Mama", I'll tell the audience that they just received a double package...Early Elvis, with the later Elvis look...By this time I've turned sideways with my gut hanging out. He didn't like the name "King". He believed there was only one King...The Lord Jesus Christ. He wasn't someone divine...just one very talented, extraordinary man...One of few known around the world by his first name. His generosity proved that he never forgot what it meant to be poor. I had the honor of doing my Elvis Tribute earlier today at a nursing home in Granbury, TX. Uh...Thank ya'...Thank ya' ver' much.
DON SUNDEEN (Dallas, TX) In Texas I was at KELP in the mid 60's and then went to KCOH in Houston where I was Pd/Ops manager. In late 60's I went into record business in Houston, than San Francisco (69) and then Hollywood. Finally, back to Texas and Dallas in 72 where I set up regional promotion and distribution, traveled Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas. As the years passed I worked for several labels and my territory expanded to include New Orleans, Memphis, St. Louis and Kansas City. I had a pretty high-profile so we probably ran into each other. After the record business I went into advertising and spent 17 years repping TV commercial directors and producing spots. Your column was mentioned to me today by Eye Lipson with whom I record radio programs for the blind on Thursdays. He mentioned that he had seen that my old bud Cousin Lenny was in the hospital in your column and I asked him to send me the link. It's a small world.

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Jim, I owe you some more writin'. I said I would write more later. Wow! The movers broke all three of your turntables, must've been the same movers we used when we moved into this place, they could've easily destroyed a bowling ball collection! If I hear of any unwanted turntables I'll be asking for an address to ship them to, right at the moment I don't know of any, but I'll ask around. Glad to hear that you have so many records. I'm working on collection number four. I've had three sizeable collections. (I won't go into what happened to the first one.) I sold off numbers two & three a box full at a time on different occasions when my bills were more than my income. Collection number four is small but growing & it will grow slowly, but steadily. Hope you've been able to put the next JRRR to bed & go to sleep. Take Care, David
TRIVIA ANSWER: In To Sir With Love LuLu is sad because she is leaving her best friend.
JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#857) August 18, 2010 [Wednesday] Trust me Jim, I remember hearing you on various impressive stations over the years….KLIF (1190) was perhaps the most impressive, but you were at several others I would have loved the chance to have worked at. Back in those days, I was still trying to learn how to talk on air without a central Texas accent! Yours Truly, John Hale; Mobile Magic Music "We're at the best parties!"
BOB SAVAGE [WWDJ-1150's last day as Top 40 before it flips to a religious format] Tomorrow Sean Casey (PD) will read to us from the book of jobs.
