RICHIE HAYWARD (1946-2010) R.I.P. Drummer and founding member of Rock band Little Feat, Richie Hayward, dies at 64 of pneumonia and complications from lung disease on Thursday, August 12, 2010. Richie is born on February 6, 1946 in Clear Lake, IA. Originally he is in an L.A. band, The Factory. Its front man Lowell George and Hayward form Little Feat. He is also a part-time actor with a small role in the 1960s TV comedy F Troop. In 1979, Little Feat disbands after the sudden death of Lowell George. In 1988, they re-form with the addition of Fred Tackett and Craig Fuller. Their next album release is Let It Roll. Richie is Little Feat's drummer until his health causes him to leave the band in 2009. It seems like Hayward plays drums with half of the members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at one time or another. As a session player he records and performs with legends like Eric Clapton, James Cotton, Bob Dylan, Buddy Guy, Robert Plant, Carly Simon, Tom Waits, Warren Zevon, and many more. Anyone who wants to remember Richie financially is invited by his family to make a donation to Sweet Relief, the Richie Hayward Fund, at www.sweetrelief.org. You can sign Richie's guest book, leave comments and memories at www.featphotos.com/RichieTrubute.

UH BUYS RICE'S RADIO STATION In Houston, TX there's an uproar on the campus of Rice University because of a potential sale of their FM radio station to the University of Houston for $9.5 million. If the purchase goes through, U of H wants to rename the station from KTRU FM to KUHC FM. This further ignites a flame on Rice's campus. U of H already has one public radio station, KUHF FM (88.7), which features both news and classical music plus other arts programming. Both radio stations will be affiliates of National Public Radio. KTRU FM (91.7) with its new call letters KUHC FM will broadcast classical music and arts. This allows KUHF FM to concentrate on NPR news and talk. U of H officials say that KUHF will raise the $9.5 million purchase price through private fundraising and increased underwriting also that no state or tuition funds will be used.
TRIVIA QUESTION: In Tom Jones' 1965 song It's Not Unusual what is it that it's not unusual to see him do? The answer appears below.
RED JONES (Washington, D.C./Reston-Centreville, VA) Still enjoying your site. I get interesting information not found elsewhere. And even though I left Texas in 1961 I enjoy reading about Texas radio in today's world. Did want to find out if Gaylon Christie was still around. Last I heard he owned a station in Killeen. After I came home from army service he and I worked briefly together at KTEM Temple before I went to Houston. Birthday number 79 coming up this week and still have a good time doing mornings. 62 years in the business. Retire to what? I had a paper route before I got into radio. Don't want to throw papers again. Keep up the good work. Red Jones; WKNG 50,000 watts; Georgia Radio Hall Of Fame
JOYCE WEBSTER [JC] (Mena, AR) Subject: Bob Tomlinson's latest... Jim, I was at KLIF (1190) and worked the weekend Bob Tomlinson referred to in the last JRRR. It was a Silver Anniversary celebration, and so much fun for not just the public but for people who worked there. As I recall, I worked on Saturday and the following day was off...seemed like KLIF was on most people's radio that weekend. One of my radio heroes came from WLS in Chicago, and I was excited about that. Of course, my radio was on my every waking moment that weekend. Would sure be interesting to know what share of listeners we had during that period! Joyce 'JC'

DON SUNDEEN (Dallas, TX) ...I'm more or less retired. As I mentioned spent most of the last two decades of my career in television commercial production, radio and records kind of lost their allure for me in the early 80's. We did in fact, go to Ft. Worth most Tuesdays en masse, my buddy Lee Arbuckle, Frank Anderson, Jeff Hackett, Patt Morriss, and many others. Those were the days and those of us who lived it were very privileged and didn't even know it.
DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Hey Jim, I was going to put an update on my Facebook page if there was anything new to report about Cuzzin' Lennie. Your having two Facebook pages is probably why it periodically ask if I want to be your friend even though you're on my friends list. I went through a similar mess with Hotmail a few years ago. Took awhile (a couple of years) but I only worked on getting it resolved intermittently. David. (maybe I should say david & lois, she always finds a place near the computer to nap, while I'm in here using it.) Take Care. David Faulkner

JERRY HEILMAN (Tyler-Nacogdoches, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#846) July 23, 2010 [Friday] The old Spotmaster cart machines were the toughest. I remember sometime in late 60s, Dudley Waller, owner of KEBE/KOOI in Jacksonville (TX) purchased the "latest and greatest" cart machines on the market. They were made by KRS Industries and featured a 8"X6" plastic cartridge. Idea was good--but... We had a single stack record model in production and news, and a six stack in control room. The "carts" were hard to handle and the player made a loud "ker-thunk" noise every time you pushed the start button. The boss did not like the noise, so we had to turn off the mic before punching the start button. So much for "tight programming" with no dead air. Thankfully, we did not keep these very long. He found a new creation--part of Schaeffer Automation's setup that used two reel-to-reel players. You programmed the code number for the commercial in, and it would forward and rewind until it settled on the correct spot. What you usually got was an old Christmas spot in July because the "sensor" got dirty. Spent all our time cleaning the sensors with Q-tips. What fun it was in those days.
BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo, TX) Subject: Johnny Ragsdale. Jim: Just noted an interesting bio from days gone by: ever hear of Johnny Ragsdale & his Sundowners? They were on KNUZ and KPRC-TV years ago, along w/ Big-D Jamboree & signed with Columbia records in 1952. Thought of you when I saw this info. BOB
TRIVIA ANSWER: Tom Jones sings It's Not Unusual to see him cry.
JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#857) August 18, 2010 [Wednesday] …and the funny thing is, even if we could envision our broadcasting careers coming to an end, I don’t think anyone could envision radio itself turning into nothing more than a free background music service, and eventually becoming irrelevant enough to virtually disappear from modern society. This isn’t the arrogance of age, but I feel sorry for the last two or three generations who, if they think of broadcasters at all, think of Howard Stern. None of us anticipated broadcasting devolving this badly, and this rapidly.
LILY TOMLIN (September 1, 1939-p) The trouble with the rat race is that even if you win you're still a rat.
Houston, Texas - Laus Deo
