ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

ENOUGH ALREADY!
Hollywood movie actress Lindsay Lohan is back in radio and TV news again. Judge Marsha Revel hands down a 90-day rehab sentence in the UCLA Medical Center to the Mean Girls actress. Her lawyer Shawn Chapman Holley asserts that Lindsay receives a misdiagnosis and she isn’t in the dire state that the court originally thinks her to be. According to Gossip Cop, a new judge is assigned to her case, Judge Elden Fox, who is in the process of issuing an order that LiLo be released. And that's not all. Getty news desk reports that E*Trade airs a TV commercial which features a milkaholic baby by the name of Lindsay. Lohan's lawyer retaliates by saying the actress deserves single-name status like Oprah or Madonna. So he files a suit against E*trade in Lohan's behalf. Will wonders never cease to amaze us?

RADIO STATION FLIPS OVER A SIMULCAST
Border Media's Regional Mexican KRIO FM (104.1) in Pearsall, TX (about 50 miles southwest of the Alamo City) flips to a simulcast of its sister station Norteno KSAH-720 in San Antonio-Universal City, TX at 12:01 am on Tuesday, August 24, 2010. Border Media claims that this act expands the reach of KSAH in south TX. The 100% simulcast brings shows to the FM dial such as The Jobs Hour, The Vicente Fernandez 12 in a Row, and Flea Market on the Air. Alfonso Flores, PD/OM for Border Media's Spanish stations brags: In the world of communications with multiple delivery platforms such as Internet, iPods, and so on, our listeners have told us that they would like to see Norteno's programming moving from exclusively AM to include options on the FM dial.

TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Subject: Hi, Jim and Lacy, You've had such a broad band of experience in the radio world that it's no wonder you're such a whiz at putting out JRRR. I'm surprised that you were able to remain cool and calm when your boss was screaming at you about your poor job at ad libbing commercials (KASO-1965). One of my main problems was always not being able to endure BS from some pip squeak of a boss who seemed to be threatened by my popularity, which sounds a lot like what you were dealing with from your boss. I really suspect he was jealous of you being able to do what he couldn't, and had to find some way to vent his frustration. You obviously have a treasure chest full of stories, and as I've said to you before...you gotta put em down in print so all of us early broadcast junkies can read em and be reminded of how great those days were and how much fun we had. Anyway, thanks for the stories. They are delightful. Tom

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (San Angelo, TX)
Subject: Another Country Music death. Jim: Just learned about death of my long-time friend, Bill Phillips @ 72 on Mon, Aug. 23 in TN. He was a part of the touring Kitty Wells-Johnny Wright shows from 1969 to 1984, and also a regular on their syndicated TV show. Bill had 3 top-ten country chart hits on his own, 1966-69. Funeral will be Friday, 27th, 1 P.M. in chapel of Hermitage F.H. & Memorial. Gardens, 535 Shute Lane, Old Hickory, TN. We visited at many shows together & corresponded over the years too. He was a fine artist indeed. BOB & Sonny Lee

BILL PHILLIPS calls me in 1969 at KBUC FM-AM in San Antonio, TX. He asks what does it take to get a song on your playlist? Advise him to record one of the Pop hits from the 1950s or very early 1960s before the Beatles invasion of America. His next release on Decca records is Johnny Burnett's Little Boy Sad which hits #17 in 1961. That puts Bill Phillips' recording at #10 on Billboard Country chart and #1 on our KBUC survey.

DON SUNDEEN (Dallas, TX) Yes, Frank (Anderson-Warner Brothers record promotions) had diabetes and had a foot removed. I spoke at his funeral and Ed Spacek and Jon Dillon and I were the pallbearers.

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: Radio Stories Part Two. Greetings Jim & Lacy, In Feb 86 The Dallas Morning News runs an article about KTNS & KLIF (which had flipped to become "Talkradio 1190" in Jan 86.) Also, in Feb 86 The Columbia School of Broadcasting (since I'm working full time in Radio) graduates me & sends a diploma (which I seem to have lost in one of the several times I've moved since then.) I still have a newsletter from them that list me as a graduate. There are a number of major events in the news during KTNS's brief life, such as, the crash of Delta flight 191, the explosion of the Space Shuttle Challenger, the meltdown at Chernobyl. Harold Baker was my boss at KTNS; he was also the News Director & anchor of the KTNS Morning Report. Some of my other duties at KTNS being the only one there overnight & for a time on Sunday mornings. during those times I Board Op., read news headlines after top of the hour ABC news, break with weather bulletins when necessary & prepare for Harold's "Morning Report" if it's weeknight. He'll arrive to start writing the state & local segments around 3:30am. I'm in charge of the national & international, carting the features & sound, running between the news & control rooms during the 6 to 9am show, etc. stay tuned... Take Care, David Faulkner; Dallas, TX

TRIVIA ANSWER: John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John sing Summer Nights in the movie Grease.

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Jim, It was great to have them (Barry Kaye and Jeff Taylor) stay with me. My first year in Brady at the first Hodges Lodges I stayed in at Brady had NO heat. So about 2 am on the first morning :) I'm laughing now Barry was in his bedroll on the kitchen and other bedroom floor and Barry yells out "Beats a Tent". In February 1996 after Canyon/ and Amarillo I join Barry to help him and his band get their equipment set up at their next event then I'd break it down at 2 am and take his truck trailer and his band's equipment then I'd park it at his place. I had a great time. Just over a year later in June 1997 I was in Bellville at AM 1090 KNUZ where Clay Gish Manager at KZTR FM in Bryan has sent me where I was the lone employee in what two years later a FEMA Representative said is a pioneering effort and asked if he could take my photo in black and white and send it to Washington for them to see. I miss having Barry getting me to laugh a the stuff he noticed I did and said. Thanks. Leslie Wayne Hodges (www.kzqx.com)
