EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL JIM PREWITT [Catfish] (Sacramento, CA) Subject: Barry Kaye Story. Hey Jimbo...I've got a Barry Kaye story for ya...When I worked at KLIF (1190), Barry Kaye was doing Afternoon Drive. One day we all got this memo from PD Jim Davis about "Content". He said in the memo he would like to hear more content on our shows. In the memo Jim encourages us to tell a "local story" on the air. Barry reads the memo on the air and all day calls himself "Content Kaye". Toward the end of his show he's reading the memo on the air again about having to tell a local story. Barry paused for a second and said, "Had a great day today played golf with the Mayor, AAAAAhooooga! This is Content Kaye on KLIF!" I have many more Barry Kaye stories but most of them would not be appropriate for your newsletter :-) Jim Prewitt; (www.JimPrewitt.com) / (www.Facebook.com/CatfishJimPrewitt) / (www.MySpace.com/Catfishonline) AOL Instant Messenger: Netcatfish Jim Rose and Lacy

WTOP GOES TO POT On the AM dial in the Washington, DC radio market the WTOP call letters move around a bit. Originally. WTOP-1500 flips to WFED-1500. Then WTOP-1050 catapults into WBQH-1050. The call letters resurface on the FM dial as news-talk WTOP FM (103.5). When you gotta go you gotta go. But if nearby Montgomery County, MD has anything to do with it you're in a heap of trouble. Due to budget cuts Montgomery County decides to remove all of the portable toilets from its parks. This involves 136 portable potties in more than 80 parks. Jim Farley, VP of news at WTOP FM (103.5) in nearby Washington, DC, says that when WTOP first hears about the removal of the portable latrines from the parks, its morning news crew does an on-the-air story about this very interesting subject and they have a hearty laugh about it. But they immediately realize that this issue is a serious matter. So, why doesn't WTOP sponsor a toilet? The Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts and WTOP Radio both now sponsor portable privies in Montgomery County, MD's parks. Others join in as sponsors.
TRIVIA QUESTION: In The Chiffons 1963 song He's So Fine why do they say he's fine? The answer appears below.
JEFF THOMPSON (Winston-Salem, NC) Yes, Jim, I certainly DO remember where I was on August 16th, 1977. (Part II) Grabbed a cab to the airport in a terrible, blinding rain storm, and held the plane for about a half hour, since Johnny Carson and Rock Hudson were reportedly to be on the same flight. That would have given me a great coup for insightful interviews, with the great NBC showman, whose son, Ricky, was my friend) and the actor, Elvis' other career. But the weather apparently delayed them, and we took off into the rain and the night. A car was waiting for me in Memphis and I headed straight to Graceland, and found about 10,000 or more people standing there in the rain. I interviewed many and found where ever in the country they had been that afternoon....when they heard the terrible bulletin that Elvis was gone....they simply made a turn in the road and headed for Memphis. Surprisingly often, I talked to people to whom Elvis had generously given them a Cadillac. So the legend is true. About that time, a group of us reporters was taken to see Elvis lying in state. And yes, the King was dead. What was UN-true, (though already widely being reported) was that he died on the same day of August as his mom. But, just thought you'd like to know, Jim, for the record how it came down that day at NBC. - Jeff Thompson (Part III in the Wednesday issue of JRRR)

JERRY HEILMAN (Nacogdoches, TX) Subject: engineering tale. This is a true story. Our engineer at Waller Broadcasting in Jacksonville (TX) was a young electronics whiz named David Higginbotham. When our old Ampex 350 broke down, we were left with no recorder in the production room. David immediately got on the phone and called "Information" for a telephone number for Ampex in California. I was sitting there when the operator told him she was unable to find a number for Tampax in Redwood City. In his normal, dry delivery, David informed the operator that he was looking for Ampex because Tampax had gone in the hole years ago. There was silence on the other end, then uncontrollable laughter from the operator. When she was finally able to control herself, she gave David the number. The old days of "Information" could be fun sometimes.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Houston-Jersey Village, TX) Ran into an interesting bit of info recently...you may wish to check out or already know this: Johnnie & Jack & Tennessee Mtn. Boys had first of many chart hits (1951-62) with a #4 hit on RCA 1/51: "Poison Love." I learned the writer of that song was an Elmer Laird, auto-dealer in Houston on KLEE! (Johnnie Wright, B 5/13/14-p & married to singer Kitty Wells; Jack Anglin, 5/13/16 to 3/7/63...killed in car crash enroute to Patsy Cline's Memorial Svc in Nashville). Seems like a local bit of interest there indeed. Ironically, I was once a DJ on WLEE, Huntington, WVA & got to meet Johnnie & Jack at several shows, along with Kitty in mid-50's. Ever heard of brother Laird?? BOB

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Chiffons say He's So Fine because he's soft-spoken. The song is #1 for 4 weeks in spring 1963.
DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Jim, Meant to thank you for mentioning Tammy Wynette's "Till I Can Make It On My Own" in Friday's issue. Hadn't heard that song in several years. Found it on YouTube. Was good to hear it again. David Faulkner
HENRY GILES (February 28, 1814-August 5, 1880) A song will outlive all sermons in the memory.
