ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

SCULLY IS STILL IN THE GAME Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully returns in 2011 for yet another season as the lead play-by-play announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team. In 1950, Scully begins calling games for the original Brooklyn Dodgers. In 1958, he moves with the team to the City of Angels. The 82-year old Scully announces over the weekend his intentions to return for the 2011 season to call Dodger home games and travel with the team as far east as Colorado. Vin's 61-year run with one team is the longest in U.S. sports history. Scully tells MLB.com: I'm very grateful for the opportunity to be with the Dodgers for all these years. It's a marvelous organization. And baseball, I love it with my heart and soul. And I found, deep in the recesses of my mind, I didn't want to sever the relationship. Reportedly, he works out a one-year contract over the weekend. Dodgers owner Frank McCourt is ecstatic: I'm as thrilled as our fans that Vin will be returning. He is not only the greatest broadcaster of all time, but also a wonderful friend. In 1982, Vin Scully receives induction into the broadcasters' Baseball Hall of Fame.

REPORTER BLOWS THE LID OFF
A woman in Venice Beach, CA reports to city officials that RVs dump their waste onto her street but she receives no response. She next contacts KFI-640 Los Angeles reporter Steven Gregory who investigates. Steven literally blows the toilet lid off of the story. The city then brings out a hazmat crew to sanitize the street. During the waste clean up they discover more human waste on at least two more streets in the area. Venice Beach City officials claim that they never receive any clean-up requests from residents. But Steven says he has emails that indicate otherwise. JRRR sends out a hearty atta-a-boy to Steven Gregory and KFI news for demonstrating the power of local investigative radio news reporting.

JIM PREWITT [Catfish] (Sacramento, CA) I was at KLIF from 1977-78. Did 10-2 at night. In early of 1977 Jim Davis from KHJ was brought in by Paul Drew to bring back KLIF. For awhile (1976) KLIF went AC and bombed. Hit a low of 2.5 ARB. Jim revamped the sound. More compression, Hot Jingles: KLIF 1190-Where it's Good Again!,Tight Playlist, former KLIF DJs like Cuzzin Lennie and Randy Robbins were Hired. Barry Kaye was originally hired for afternoons. He quit after 3 months and Randy Robbins replaced him. Tom Kent did 6-10 for awhile then they moved 10-2a late nighter Harry Nelson who took 6-10. That's when I did 10-2. Nick Alexander was middays. We had two different morning shows. Originally Charlie Brown from KJR Seattle and then Charlie Van Dyke came in. When we beat KNUS, KLIF hired #1 night jock in the city Cat Simon from KNUS. He replaced Harry Nelson at night. Cat eventually went to KVIL. For about two years KLIF was HOT. KLIF in 1977 toppled the #1 CHR KNUS and was barely behind new CHR Z-97. KVIL was the #1 Station in the market. KLIF went from 23rd place to 5th place! One of our promotions we gave away 30 cars in 30 days. A car a day! THAT was radio my friend! But like always owners came in and started to interfere with programming. Next thing you know KLIF was down to a 3.0 and in 12th place. Everybody bailed out. KLIF was bought by Fairchild and in 78 it was sold. We were all out of jobs by then. After KLIF, I went to another legend WAPE-Jacksonville and worked with the Greaseman! RAY WHITWORTH (DFW-Arlington, TX)
1981 - KLIF (1190) flips to country. Yeah the history of the station was magnificent. I can remember sitting in that studio in 1977 with Andy Waldrop looking out over Commerce street and feeling the sense of legacy in that studio. 22 years later I sat in for Bill Mack doing the Midnight Cowboy Radio Network (WBAP-820)...and when a break for news came I went to the window and felt history there too and felt my Dad listened to this station back in the 30's while he was a teenager. History that is lost on many. Later, Jim. Ray

LARRY SCOTT (Dallas-Terrell, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#862) August 30, 2010 [Monday] Jim, tell Bob Grant that Elmer Laird didn't write "Poison Love" even though his name is on it. Tilman Franks wrote it and gave it to Mr. Laird for sponsoring Tilman and Jimmy and Johnny ('If You Don't Somebody Else Will') on radio. Mr. Laird also had white suits made for them. Later Tilman returned to Shreveport and shortly after that Hank Williams came to Shreveport. He didn't have a suit so Tilman had his white suit altered to fit Hank and that suit became a trademark. Tilman and Jimmy Fautharee both told me the story. Larry Scott

JIMMY AND JOHNNY are Jimmy Fautharee who is born in El Dorado, AR in 1934 and Johnny Mathis who comes to life as John Wesley Mathis in Maud, TX on September 28, 1933. Their big hit is If You Don't Somebody Else Will (#3-1954). In the 1960s, Johnny resurfaces as Country Johnny Mathis with Please Talk to My Heart (#14-1963).

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: Issue 861. Greetings Jim & Lacy, Tom Ellis Issue 861. I agree. You should write a book! Quote from Mark Twain (No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session.). I've heard that said for years about the Texas Legislature. Didn't know its origins. Take Care, David Faulkner

JOAN PATE-DAY (Cedar Creek Lake, TX)
Subject: Video. Hearing so much about the Eryah Budu video, stripping at Dealey Plaza, I decided to watch it to see what it was all about, even though that is not my style of music, if one can call it music. I was shocked to hear in the beginning of the video my brother Sam saying the words he had made so famous while reporting the mobile news on KBOX (1480). Sam has now been gone a year this week and yet his voice lives on. I am guessing, knowing Sam, he would have received a kick out of this video and sure his friends on the site would agree. As for me, I did not care for it at all. If it had been me walking around the Plaza pulling my clothes off a piece at a time I would have been thrown into the hoosegow.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Jimmy Gilmer and the Firewalls song Sugar Shack is about a coffee house made out of wood.

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, I have fun at El Centro when they had a studio set up in the basement, and using a Gates Cart Machine and 2 turntables, a Wollensak Reel to Reel, with a Spotmaster Mixing Board. They had us playing Top-40; however; I would stick in R&B that I liked. Like Al Green, The Snake and Show And Tell. It was fun also getting to be at KCHU (FM) the short time I was there. At night I used to listen to a Blues program over XEG 1050, the station sent me my first QSL for a report I sent. Charles George
