EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL BILL CONWAY (San Francisco, CA) Hi Jim, Yes the WFAA AM studio is that big room but they had just reached the deal to have 820 be WBAP. The green boxes with the ability to switch any studio to any frequency still existed but we never used. I started at WFAA on weekends for WFAA FM- Stereo 98. Grady Royster was the PD. So on Saturdays I tended to and intimately knew the automation system known affectionately as Winkie (on the Blinkie). On Sundays I ran the PA shows Norvel Slater and tended Winkie. I had lots of free time between automation tape changes and would go sit in that big studio with Lee Douglas, Tony Lawrence, Ron Gray, Jeff Dale, Charlie Pro or Chuck Murphy (who attended Bishop Dunne High School just like me.) I would listen, run errands, pick their brains, pull sports scores, anything. I also visit the newsroom and with my North Texas classmate Dave Cooke as well as Bob Morrison, and Jay Ward. PRO FOOTBALL'S OLDEST PLAYER DIES George Blanda, the ageless Hall of Fame quarterback and kicker who plays seven seasons with the Houston Oilers dies at 83. He is the Oilers first quarterback who leads the team to the first two American Football League titles in 1960 and 1961. George brings pro football to its utmost both on the field and on our TV sets. Blanda spends 10 seasons with the Chicago Bears, part of 1 with the Baltimore Colts, 7 with the Houston Oilers plus his final 9 with the Oakland Raiders. George retires one month prior to his 49th birthday before the 1976 season. When he retires, Blanda holds the pro football scoring record with 2,002 points. He kicks 335 field goals, 943 extra points, runs for nine touchdowns and throws for 236 points. George plays longer than anyone else in pro football history. Before Monday night's Green Bay Packers-Chicago Bears football game, a moment of silence is held in George Blanda's honor.

CITADEL CONNECTICUT CONNECTION DISCONNECTS Lately, several AM News-Talk radio stations begin to simulcast their programming on FM in order to gain younger demographics. But just the opposite is true for Citadel WXLM FM (News Talk 104.7) in Montauk, NY because it flips its call letters to WELJ FM with a Gospel format. But is that the route that WELJ FM will end up with because there is a similarity between WELJ and sister Adult CHR WPLJ FM (95.5) in nearby NYC. Citadel also operates Classic Rock WMOS FM (The Wolf 102.3) and CHR WQGN FM (Q105) in the New London market. Spanish Tropical WSUB-980 (Caliente 980) switches its call letters to WXLM. Citadel says that WXLM’s talk format follows its call letters over to the new WXLM-980 in October 2010. WXLM-980 has an FCC license for Groton, CT which is across the Long Island Sound. But WXLM-980 operates at 1,000 watts daytime and only 72 at night. Not quite a powerhouse frequency.
TRIVIA QUESTION: What year does crooner Bing Crosby have his first radio show on CBS? The answer appears below.

IRA [Eye] LIPSON (Dallas, TX) Subject: Radio Caroline. Jim...At one of my first jobs in radio I worked with Tom Lodge, a great guy who had a fascinating history as one of the first pirate DJs at England’s Radio Caroline. Tom has just released a book about those days and asked me pass along the info to friends. There’s also a fun video with music of the era. (www.shipthatrocked.com/radiocaroline.html) I think your readers would enjoy it. Thanks! Ira "Eye" Lipson; Certified Media Hotshot (www.LipsonWorks.com)
TOM LODGE (Santa Cruz, CA) To: Eye Lipson. Subject: Radio Caroline. My publisher has sent me the copy below. I would love it if you would send this out to your friends. It is a fun preview of the book and he has created an interesting web page for the book. There's a new book that reveals the amazing, true but unknown story of the British Invasion, and how pirate radio changed the face of rock and roll forever. It's called The Ship that Rocked the World: How Radio Caroline Defied the Establishment, Launched the British Invasion and Made the Planet Safe for Rock and Roll, and was written by Tom Lodge, Radio Caroline's top Deejay. It has a Forward by Steven van Zandt. Think we're exaggerating about the importance of Radio Caroline and Tom Lodge to the history of rock and roll? Pete Townshend said: "Without Caroline we would not have sold a single record. Tom Lodge was a vital figure in Caroline's most vital times." And, Paul McCartney said: "Pirate radio, and in particular Radio Caroline, was a really exciting part of all of our lives in those days and summed up the spirit of the times culturally and musically." Here's a video preview. There's some great music in it, so make sure your sound is turned on: www.shipthatrocked.com/radiocaroline.html Thank you for this. All the best, Tom Lodge

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#874) September 27, 2010 [Monday] Jim, I just thought I would let you know. I try not to brag on my 11 year old daughter and her efforts to become a productive citizen, but yesterday was the apex of what she is becoming. She participated in the Special Olympics swimming contest yesterday and she got a Silver Medal and a Bronze Medal. As I looked at all of these kids out there trying their hearts out to make their families proud, I realized what a wimp I am. I complain about intractable back pain and the stroke, among many other things. Zoe doesn't complain about what she CAN'T do, she does what she CAN do and does it pretty well. In Greek, Zoe means "life". She is full of life and she is a winner, too. Sorry to brag, but it is a feeling like you have never had when you watch society's neurologically atypical doing the best that they can possibly do. I wish I were as worthy of praise as they are. Jeff Cunningham, DC
TRIVIA ANSWER: Throughout the Great Depression and on into World War II, Bing Crosby is America's most beloved crooner and one of its favorite stars. On September 2, 1931, Bing Crosby opens his first radio show on CBS with a new theme song: Where the Blue of the Night Meets the Gold of the Day. The Mills Brothers hitchhike to NYC from Cincinnati to audition. CBS hires them on the spot. From her audition and appearance, Kate Smith gets her own CBS radio show.
BOB GRANT (Abilene, TX) Subject: Roger O'Neil, NBC. Jim: Roger O'Neil of NBC news will be inducted into the West Virginia Broadcasters Hall of Fame on Oct. 2, 2010. He moved to W. Va. in late 60's as news reporter at WSAZ-TV, Huntington. He covered the Marshall Univ. football team plane crash & other major stories. He was also at WAVE-TV, Louisville, KPRC-TV, Houston & WMAQ-TV, Chicago. He moved to NBC Network as news correspondent in 1979 & was named NBC News Denver bureau-chief in 1983. He now contributes occasional pieces for the network. O'Neil joins 12 other inductees being so honored for class of 2010. BOB & Sonny Lee
MARILYN MONROE (June 1, 1926-August 5, 1962) Fame will go by and, so long, I've had you, fame. If it goes by, I've always known it was fickle. So at least it's something I experience, but that's not where I live.
