EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL DERRILL HOLLY [E] (Arlington, VA) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#881) October 13, 2010 [Wednesday] RIP is often seen on headstones. I was raised Catholic, so we have heaven, hell and purgatory. In the case of Mr. Lane, I hold him no ill will and only hope that his soul will not be troubled in the afterlife. (On background, there was lots of intrigue in Cleveland R&B radio in the late 60s and early 70s as black broadcasters began to assert themselves for more of a voice in station operations.) By the way, WABQ was 1540 an AM daytimer, WJMO was 1490 (1000 kw days 250 kw nights), but sometime after about 1990, the two stations did a frequency switch. Glad you and Lacy are doing well.
NPR SHOOTS ITSELF IN THE FOOT! National Public Radio says that it is increasingly uncomfortable with comments news analyst Juan Williams was making on Fox News. Bill O’Reilly says, It’s ridiculous. Bill's favorite kickboxing opponent Whoopi Goldberg agrees that it is ridiculous. In all of our opinions, it seems, the firing of Juan was a total mistake and sends the wrong message, and NPR – get yourself together. NPR awakens a sleeping giant because its tens of millions of dollars in federal funding come into question after they bounce Juan Williams. The GOP readies itself to probe NPR's federal funding. FNC's Bill O’Reilly is ready for action: We’re going to make a big deal out of this on The Factor. Immediate suspension of every taxpayer dollar going into the National Public Radio outfit. We’re going to get legislation. We’re going to freeze it down, so they don’t get any more money. This is outrageous. NPR is a strictly liberal radio network. JRRR believes NPR's outrageous action boils down to one simple factor. They are extremely jealous of the fact that Juan Williams appears quite often on the #1 cable TV news network, Fox News Channel. Moderately liberal news analyst Juan Williams opens his eyes to how NPR plays the news game. NPR might just be closing the door just as it prepares for its fund raising drives. Stay tuned because JRRR believes the axe is about to fall on NPR's head.

SO LONG RANDY Media giant Tribune slowly inks it way out of bankruptcy. Their board of directors ousts one member of its trio at the top, Lee Abrams. Next out the door is Randy Michaels. That leaves only Sam Zell. Former News Corporation #2 honcho, Peter Chernin, who is now Fox TV and film mega-producer has something else up his sleeve in his quest as a Big Media mogul. Deadline Hollywood reports that Peter Chernin is on the short list to possibly replace Sam Zell as chairman of the Chicago-based Tribune Company when it emerges from bankruptcy. Don't touch that Bat dial.
TEXAS RANGERS ADVANCE TO WORLD SERIES! Many fans watch the Texas Rangers beat the New York Yankees 6-1 on Friday, October 22, 2010 in the deciding Game 6 of baseball's American League Championship Series in Arlington, TX to advance to the World Series for the first Time. Rangers Hall of Fame pitcher Nolan Ryan who is the Texas Rangers president and co-owner hugs his wife in the front row before he goes out on the field to join his team's jubilant celebration. In the late 1990s, the Yankees knock Texas out of the playoffs in each of their three previous appearances. Texas Rangers ace left-handed pitcher Cliff Lee readies himself for Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night in either San Francisco or Philadelphia.

HENRY WILLIAMS (Austin, TX) Yes, Jim. Got that. Thanks. I worked at several stations in Austin over the years, but never KNOW. I knew a lot of the people who worked there and remain friends with many. My timeline in Austin was: 1970-1973 KVET DJ; 1973-1982 KOKE FM/AM MD & DJ, 1982-1998 KVET/KASE MD & DJ. I was also at KHFI for a brief time in the '70's, but my chief duty was DJ at its sister station KTAP (AM 970). In the 2000's I was DJ at Lone Star 93, an L.B.J. station, and at Oldies 103, an Emmis station. At most of the stations my air name was 'Steve Gary'. Jim, you have worked at several of the stations in San Antonio and Fort Worth where friends of mine worked. In a future e-mail to you I'll be running some of those names past you to see if you knew them. All the best. - Henry Williams

JOHN HALE (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#881) October 13, 2010 [Wednesday] Jim, Thanks for the link to Tom Lodge’s book on Radio Caroline. My favorite movie of the last several years is "Pirate Radio". It’s good, but based on everything I’ve heard about the so-called pirate radio ships, can’t touch real life on Radio Caroline. Broadcasting in the mid and late sixties was nowhere near as structured as it is now, but even back then, stories about what it was like aboard the pirate radio ships made me wish for that kind of creative freedom at land-locked stations. I can’t wait to get the book. Yours Truly, John Hale; Mobile Magic Music; 512.336.8742 (33.Music) "We're at the best parties!"
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES (Marshall, TX) Hi Jim, Thank you for your birthday greeting. I am now the age of the KCRS Midland Texas AM Frequency (550). Leslie Wayne Hodges (www.kzqx.com)

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Abilene, TX) Subject: Thoughts For Day. Noted 2 recently you may wish to use in future: (1) "The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don't want, drink what you don't like, and do what you'd rather not." (Mark Twain) (2)"Constantly choosing the lesser of two evils, is still choosing evil." (Jerry Garcia) You can add years to each name as my big book still in packing in garage. Are you aware that this month has 5 Fridays, 5 Saturdays & 5 Sundays?? Happens once in 823 years!! I hope that is right...sounds good anyway. BOB
EDWARD R. MURROW (April 25, 1908-April 27, 1965) Good night, and good luck.
