ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

RADIO - ELECTION DAY BLUES? The up coming 2010 mid-term election may prove to be the most expensive one yet that can shatter records. But radio seems to be playing second fiddle to TV in terms of election dollars. Political analysts predict $3 billion or more to be spent by Election Day. Wells Fargo researcher Marci Ryvicker reports that local TV stations receive $1.23 billion in election ads through October 10, 2010 while radio’s political bucks so far fall below that figure. Late in the game, radio begins to see political spots increase over the past week that indicates radio’s role is mounting.

HOUSTON'S BUZZ PUTS THE POINT TO SLEEP
Clear Channel Modern Rock KTBZ FM (The Buzz 94.5) in Houston, TX rises to the top of the heap with its non-classic Rock market all to itself. The Buzz's everything to everyone works pretty well as long as there is no competition. But can KTBZ FM succeed if it has a direct competitor? Cox Radio will soon find out as it retires Best of the 80's and More KHPT FM (The Point 106.9). Other stations in the Cox Radio Houston cluster include KGLK FM, KKBQ FM, and KTHT FM. They lie in the Uptown Houston district at 3 Post Oak Central. Radio Insight reports that on Friday, October 22, 2010 Cox registers 1069TheZone.com along with Twitter account @1069thezone. Will KHPT FM out zone The Buzz? Only time will tell.

ELVIS' DR. NICK'S LAWYER SUCCUMBS Nashville, TN attorney and Watergate prosecutor, James F. Neal, dies at 81 on Friday evening, October 22, 2010. From 1961 to 1964 Neal is Special Assistant to U.S. Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy. The native of Sumner County successfully prosecutes Teamster Union president James Hoffa for jury tampering. From 1964 to 1966 he serves as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee. In 1971, James founds Neal & Harwell. In 1973 and 1974 he serves as Chief Trial Counsel of the Watergate Special Prosecution Force. Neal associates himself with some of America's most notable legal cases that includes the defense of Elvis Presley's physician, Dr. George Nichopoulos, Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards, the Ford Motor Company in the Pinto criminal trial and Exxon Corporation after the Exxon Valdez Alaskan oil spill. We don't hold it against him but he also serves as private counsel for VP Albert Gore Jr. in the late 1990s. Neal lectures at Vanderbilt's School of Law from 1966 to 1979. He takes leaves of absence in 1973 & 1974.

TRIVIA QUESTION: What is CBS' first FM radio station? The answer appears below.

MOVERS AND SHAKERS

•NBC UNIVERSAL and Google discontinue their ad-sales partnership that begins in 2008. This split causes Google's TV ad-sales unit to lose one of its major alliances. Google still deals with Dish, DirecTV plus a handful of smaller networks that includes Ovation and the Tennis Channel. •CLEAR CHANNEL makes changes in its Norfolk, VA cluster. CCR moves Oldies from WCDG FM 92.1 to 105.3 which is the former home of Urban AC WKUS FM and relaunches it as Magic 105.3, Greatest Hits of All Time. WKUS' programming edges over to 107.7 which overrides Smooth Jazz WJCD FM and simulcasts on 92.1.

ENTERTAINMENT AND NEWS MILESTONES

•1957 WOWL TV NBC/CBS CH15 in Florence, AL begins broadcasting on October 27th. •1962 KRISTEN HALL singer-songwriter founding member of the trio Sugarland born on October 26th in Gross Pointe, MI. •1973 ALLAN [Rocky] LANE western cowboy actor dies at 64 on October 27th. •1984 ALABAMA's single If You're Gonna Play In Texas (You Gotta Have A Fiddle In The Band) scores #1 on Billboard on October 27th. •1999 FRANK DE VOL film and TV composer My Three Sons theme dies on October 27th at 88. •2001 BROOKS & DUNN's Only In America rings #1 on Billboard's Country singles survey on October 27th.

JIM PREWITT [Catfish] (Sacramento, CA) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#885) October 22, 2010 [Friday] Hello Jimbo. Greetings from the left coast! I read in JRRR about radiobop.com. Thoroughly enjoyed this website! All of it was put together just perfect. Jingles, Promos, Music. Hope you and lacy ARE doing well. TOM ELLIS (Boston-East Sandwich-Newton, MA)
Subject: Oldies. Hi, Jim and Lacy, Your knowledge of the record business is absolutely amazing. Never saw anything like it. I knew a little "surface" info about the artists, but nothing in detail...like the Elvis fade out - fade back in. I was particularly fond of the Diamonds "Little Darlin", and played it most days on my High Time show on KVET in the 50's. But I never knew they were a group from Canada who recorded the tune as a joke on the do-wops. Anyway, thanks for the inside tidbits. Very interesting to an old 50's DJ like me. Tom

FRANK HALEY (Albuquerque, NM) Subject: Wonderful KBOX-1480! JIM: Thanks... What about Dick Moore, wasn't he of the same caliber as Joe Long. I seem to remember that they both worked at KLIF (1190) at different times. Frank PS: I've got a new e-mail, the memory of Juno is just not big enough. new e-mail: frank.haley.p38@gmail.com I'm still using both...the Juno account will go away in the near future. Not sure when. fh

CHET MAXWELL (San Antonio, TX)
Subject: Wonderful KBOX-1480! Dick Moore died several years ago. I will come up with 200 words without any trouble. I will send you something on Friday. Tom Allen was PD from about '73 to about '76. He then went to KVET (1300), where he spent the rest of his career until his recent retirement. He would be a good addition to the piece. What do you think?

TWEED SCOTT (Houston, TX)
Hi Jim, By any chance did we work together at KTRM back around '76? I worked with a Jim Rose back then. I had moved off the air and into sales and he came in and worked some stuff. I worked in the business for 31 years before I had my fill. I'd love to get your newsletter. I loved what I did I just got to where I couldn't stand the people I worked for. I'd love to meet you for coffee one of these days and share some radio war stories. (www.TweedScott.com)

KTRM-990
is my domain from 1976-77 as Music Director and noon-3pm DJ. This is after I depart noon-3pm on Top 40 KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth when they flip to Country in 1976. KTRM is once the home to the Big Bopper J.P. Richardson (Chantilly Lace #6-1958). Willie Nelson also serves some time on KTRM. One year is all my body can endure inside KTRM's raging lion's den. Chris Collier makes me one of those offers that I cannot refuse to be a DJ on KIKK FM (95.7) in Houston. On the day that Elvis Presley dies - August 16, 1977 - is when the movers and I lay down tracks of rubber on I-10 west to the Bayou City. Over 30 years in Space City with about a dozen FM and AM radio stations under my belt plus Clinton's disastrous Telcom Law of 1996 combine to ignite my departure from radio in 1996.

BLAKE LINDSAY (Dallas-Addison, TX) Hey Jim! Sorry it took me a minute to get back with you. I am the communications direct with the Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind. It’s been challenging and rewarding. I joined them one year ago last week. I produce audio production for us, facilitate meetings, write stories and reports and more. I also continue to work part time with Ziglar Incorporated in Plano TX. They have lots of audio goodies for me to knock out and our weekly Inspire Podcast which is a freebee at www.ziglar.com/podcast. They are only ten minutes long, and the very best of Zig throughout the past thirty years. Timeless encouraging and inspiring stories. I have a hand full of clients I perform imaging for. Life is more enjoyable, when you are working hard. I know that you can relate with that, with all of the collecting and wonderful writing you do several times each week. Keep on knockin’ us alive Jim. I enjoy reading your work very much. Blake Lindsay (www.blazinblake.com)

TRIVIA ANSWER:
In 1941 CBS gets its first FM station, WCBS in NYC. After the war ends, CBS picks up its other FM frequencies.

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX)
Subject: Old KSKY (660) Site. Jim, Should've included in the KSKY story that Scott Fybush's website www.fybush.com has numerous photos from his many tower site tours. Also of interest to many will be his featured Tower Site of the Week. David

NATALIE WOOD (July 20, 1938-November 29, 1981)
At night, when the sky is full of stars and the sea is still you get the wonderful sensation that you are floating in space.
