Did they have a repeater transmission somewhere along the line? All I know is that they had one h***uva news team, which I thought was the best after us at KONO. Since I'd covered JFK the day before, I wanted to follow what was happening on his motorcade through Dallas, so I was tuned in to KBOX when I heard the news. There's a whole other back story running along with this front tale, but it has nothing to do with radio, TV or news, so I won't bother you. Tom

SCRIPPS TV RELOCATES Gannett's The Tennessean reports that Scripps TV's unit relocates its official HQ to Knoxville, TN. The city already has the largest piece of the company's operations. This includes the HGTV and DIY networks. Approximately 850 of its 1,950 employees already work in Knoxville. Scripps TV's previous location has its base in Cincinnati, OH. Scripps top execs continue to maintain dual offices in both Cincinnati and Knoxville. In March 2010, Scripps opens a 150,000-square-foot building on the west side of Knoxville that consolidates operations from three buildings. About 40 employees work for Scripps at the Great American Country (GAC) network in Nashville, TN.
LOUVIN BENEFIT CONCERT Alison Krauss headlines the Charlie Louvin benefit concert on Saturday evening in Bell Buckle, to raise money to offset the cost of his pancreatic cancer treatment. The 83-year-old Country Music Hall of Fame member, Charlie Louvin, hands over the headliner reins to Krauss: I’m going to sing, but I’ll go on right before Alison. I wouldn’t follow her with nothing less than a Caterpillar d12 bulldozer. She is a singing piece of machinery. Louvin’s singing career goes back to 1940, which is 31 years before Krauss is born. Charlie and his brother Ira are The Louvin Brothers which are one of country music’s most celebrated duos. Charlie is a solo artist since 1964. He says that Saturday’s all-day event also serves as a CD release party for his new album, The Battles Rage On, that releases on November 9, 2010.

CHET MAXWELL (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Wonderful KBOX-1480. Hi Jim, You asked me to send a short note about my time at KBOX-1480. It is difficult to select just one item out of the 17 years I spent at KBOX and our fm KMEZ. I joined KBOX-1480 in December, 1968 after 5 years at KILT in Houston. This was shortly after the KBOX format had changed to Country from the legendary Rock format. The change was made because of an obvious format "hole" in the Dallas market for a full time country station. I say the "Dallas" market, because this was several years before Arbitron combined the Dallas and Fort Worth markets into one. KBOX's weak signal could compete in Dallas, but the signal was almost non-existent in Fort Worth. The move to country was an almost immediate success. KLIF, KBOX and KRLD were almost always the top three in the Dallas rating books. You have discussed several of the great personalities that were at KBOX during the Rock'n'Roll Days. The KBOX succession of very talented people continued through the years of playing country. Space, and my memory, won't permit me to mention them all. I would like to name a few: Joe Long, Dick Moore, Jay Ward, Dave O'Brien, Rick Fulgham, Tom Allen, Bobby Dark, Jack Weston, Allan Peck, Penny Reeves, Peggy Sears, Ken Knox, Ken Loomis, Tim Kase, Hymen Childs, Dusty Black, Liz Barber, Al Lurie, Dennis Sealy, Frank Carter......and of course Jim Rose. Thank you, Jim, for the opportunity to mention these folks.

GARY DELAUNE (San Antonio, TX) Subject: Chuck Dunaway. Jim; Reading what Chuck Dunaway wrote about his days at KBOX and KLIF, when I was at OU, I remember hearing a guy on WKY Radio who said; "This is the round mound of sound" Chuck Dunaway. He was on with a guy named 3-D Danny, Danny Williams, Wakefield Holley was on the air then and also an overnight guy I think by the name of Jerry Kunkel. On KOCY, we had Monte Hoyt, Dale "Wehba and others. Chris Daniels, John Doremus, Bill Fountain and some others were also on WKY and I said then and I say it now, Chuck Dunaway was perhaps the best straight deejay I ever heard. He didn't try to be funny or witty or clever, just what you wanted to hear and I thought he was great. Of course, there were other talented and great deejays I worked with; Russ Knight "the Weird Beard", Kenny Dowe "Granny Emma", Ron Chapman, Paul Berlin, Jerry Mueller and many more. Oh yes, and another one, Bill Ennis who later became a sportscaster in Houston and died all too young of a heart attack. Gary DeLaune (www.garydnews.com)

RAY WHITWORTH (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#886) October 25, 2010 [Monday] Yeah Jim, The Rangers are on the way to the world series. I know Jerry Jones is hacked off because it takes the spotlight away from his mediocre football team. The downside, prices at restaurants, gas stations and grocery stores in the immediate area around the ball park (7 mile radius) have sky rocketed. Gas at my local station was 2.57...now its 2.75...loaf of bread was 99 cents, its now 1.29. Hamburger at a local joint was 2.25 it's now $4.00. Nothing like gluttony and greed to celebrate. The AVG Ranger fan who has waited so long since 1972 is like the avg Cowboy fan...they simply can't afford to attend. Ray
