EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL BILL CONWAY (San Francisco, CA) Subject: chuck murphy. I saw Tony Lawrence and Bud Buschardt’s mentioning Chuck Murphy who truly has pipes. Here is a link to his web site www.dreamgiftmedia.com/ Chuck was a year ahead of me at Bishop Dunne and as I recall played drums and sang in a high school band called Sammy & The Only Ones. SOUL SINGER CANCELS SHOWS Acting on the advice of her doctors; Aretha Franklin cancels her appearance in Charlottesville, VA plus her show at Drury University in Springfield, MO this week. The Drury University press release also states that she will not perform again in 2010. If what we understand is true, it also means that her appearances are off at the MGM Grand at Foxwoods in Mashantucket, CT on November 20, 2010 and at the Fox Theatre in Detroit, MI on December 9th. But, her representative tells Pollstar.com that, so far, only the October dates are off. Aretha's physical condition appears to be a hushed up matter. She does have a few setbacks this year. Two months ago she falls and breaks two ribs which causes her to call off two concerts in NY. Last month Franklin' son receives injuries from a confrontation, which requires emergency surgery. Her Charlottesville appearance is a make-up date for the October 1st concert that she postpones to aid her son during his recovery. JRRR prays that Aretha Franklin’s health improves so that she can return to the stage to belt out her Classic hit tunes.

ORLEANS NOT STILL THE ONE? Remember the great summer 1976 feel good tune Still the One by Rock group Orleans? John Hall is the one who lays down those terrific guitar licks. After the mid 1970s Orleans' tunes fall off of the national charts. John decides to get into politics. Since 2007, he represents New York District 19 that serves all of Putnam County plus parts of Dutchess, Orange, Rockland and Westchester Counties. But the recent GOP tsunami brings his defeat at the hand of tea party favorite Republican Nan Heyworth. Nan beats Hall 53% to 47%.

CHUCK DUNAWAY (Houston-Katy, TX) Jim; You wanted a few words about my memory of K-BOX (1480) in Dallas. "It wasn’t long before one of the monthly Hooper surveys indicated we had beaten KLIF by a small amount in at least one day-part. That was enough to get the attention of KLIF GM Bill Morgan, one of McLendon’s top lieutenants, who called me at home the night the survey was released. He requested I come to his house and talk to him the following day. We met at the pool in his backyard, and I was hired to do afternoons at KLIF for substantially more money. Chuck Dunaway

DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: Old KSKY Site. Greetings Jim & Lacy, Looking at this picture recently www.fybush.com/site-021107.html (scroll about 2/3 of the way down for photo of the old KSKY transmitter site) brought back some memories. This site was out on Scyene Road in Dallas. Ike Blevins (our Chief Engineer at KTNS) helped with the construction of the night pattern portion of it. Prior to 1986 KSKY was a daytimer @ 10 KW through one tower. The new night pattern would be 250 watts using three towers. When it was ready to go, Ike invited me to stop by for a tour. Not long after KSKY started broadcasting at night, they hired my friend Judith Powell to do an evening air shift playing Gospel music. She did her show from this site. I remember stopping by to visit with her during her show. Just some memories of an old site torn down several years ago. It's probably a housing development by now! Take Care, David Faulkner

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Abilene, TX) Subject: B-Western movies. Jim: yes, we could talk all day about the ole B-Westerns & those stars of the big-screen. I have been most fortunate to have met several of them including: Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Gene Autry, Tex Ritter, Tim Holt, Johnny Mack Brown, Al "fuzzy" St. John, Tim McCoy (whom I brought on stage once in a show), Buster Crabbe, Eddie Dean, George Montgomery, Johnny Bond, William "Hopalong Cassidy" Boyd, Dorothy Fay, Stuart Hamblen, Rex Allen, Gregory Peck, Jimmy Stewart, Bob Nolan, Dick Foran, Gale Storm, Merle Travis, Wesley Tuttle, Jimmy Wakely, Bob Wills, Chill Wills, Dale Robertson, Pee Wee King, Jimmie Davis, Tex Fletcher, Lloyd Perryman, Jimmy Bryant, Spike Jones, etc. (Served as MC on a few Tex Ritter shows too & have autographs still on file for several above list, of which I believe only perhaps two survive..) So plan your trip west & we'll meet for an ole-fashion gab-fest. Besides, Barb & I are good hosts.
TRIVIA ANSWER: The Gene Autry Show premieres on CBS TV on July 23, 1950. The popular TV western's last broadcast is on August 7, 1956.
CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Hi, It is like Jazz where performers claimed they did better in Europe than at home. You don't miss water until... I think the young kids miss out when they toss something aside because of age, but then we do also. There is money in being new even if it is repackaged... Like Classical Music stations that remove the slow movements of a concerto and play only pieces that are well known and upbeat. I like making homegrown music but I know there is no market, so have made money doing other things like working in the grocery industry. Charles
JOHNNY GRIFFIN [tenor saxophonist] (April 24, 1928-July 25, 2008) Jazz is music made by and for people who have chosen to feel good in spite of conditions.
