ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
R.I.P. LESLIE NIELSEN A Hollywood actor who charms motion picture audiences for decades with his dramatic roles pleads to do comedy in film. Actor Leslie Nielsen strikes gold with his comedic roles in the hit movie Airplane! plus the accident-prone detective Frank Drebin in the Naked Gun comedy series. He dies at 84 from complications of pneumonia at a hospital near his home in Ft. Lauderdale, FL on Sunday, November 28, 2010. Leslie Nielsen is born on February 11, 1926 in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. His acting career in motion pictures and TV covers more than 60-years. It all begins in the 1950s in episodes of The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse and Tales of Tomorrow. He wins an Emmy nomination for lead actor in the TV comedy series Police Squad! Six years later, Nielsen brings back his role in a feature-length version of the TV show in the film Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad along with two sequels. Instead of flowers, Leslie Nielsen's family asks that donations be made in his name to the charity of your choice.

NEIL YOUNG'S ELECTRIC CAR CATCHES FIRE Pop-Country icon Neil Young’s 1959 Lincoln Continental that he modifies to run on electrical energy stumbles after the auto’s charging system starts a massive fire in his San Francisco, CA warehouse. The car is plugged into a charging socket and left unattended. But the wall charging system is not properly tested and causes an electrical fire. Neil sighs, We are rebuilding. The reason we started this project has not changed. On a project like this, setbacks happen for a reason and we can see that very well from here. Young’s company, LincVolt, owns the warehouse which is estimated to have $1 million in damages. Neil says that the car will be rebuilt from a parts car given to him by his wife Pegi for his 65th birthday.
TV ADS REVIVE POP HITS Another popular Oldie but Goodie tune graces our TV screens to promote a product. Melanie's hit song Brand New Key from 1971 now fills our TV screens telling us about Hewlett-Packard printers. Her tune revives fond memories of our younger days. Melanie's husband of 45 years, Peter Schekeryk, passes away at 68 on Wednesday, October 26, 2010 while he shops in Framingham, MA. Peter is also producer of all of Melanie's record albums except for one. We remember Melanie Safka best for her 1970's hits Brand New Key and Lay Down. Peter Schekeryk's survivors include his wife Melanie and their three children Beau Jarred, Jeordie and Leilah.

JOHN BASS [Legendary KLIF-1190 Newscaster] (Tyler, TX) Hi Jim. Ron Selden contacted me today and told me of your newsletter. I have known Ron and his brother Mike for umpteen years from our radio days. In fact, Ron & his wife are moving to Tyler soon, in order to look after his wife's aging parents who live here. I have often wondered whatever happened to Dick Mock, Dick Glancey, and a few of the others I knew back in those days. I still hear about Ken Dow (and Granny Emma) occasionally, but otherwise, it is a whole new ball game out there now in radio...and also in TV!! The internet has changed EVERYTHING!!! Take care, and let me hear from you from time to time. Let me know what you need from me RE: signing up for your newsletter, and I'll get back to you. Take care, and God Bless!! John Bass

DAVE TUCKER [Legendary KBOX-1480, KFJZ-1270, KXOL-1360 DJ] (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: Thoughts on KBOX. Jim, you asked me to print a few thoughts on my time at KBOX. I remember having so much fun working for KBOX. The greatest guy in the world, Dan Patrick McCurdy, recommended me to Bill Ward the PD. I came to Dallas to look at it and I was impressed. Bill Ward and I would stay friends after KBOX. I visited with him in California in his later career. Anyway, I remember you could use all of your imagination on the spots you'd cut at KBOX. And that turned into fun. I remember making good friends. Dan Patrick was great on the early morning gig. I came along at nine. Bill Ward worked 12 to 3 PM. Then came Bill Holly for afternoon drive. Frank Jolly came on for the night slot. Jerry Knight as on the all night show. His real name, I believe was Chef Diaso. I never heard anyone have a bad show at KBOX. I apologize for wrong spellings on names. I also remember having Joe Long for a newsman. He was a real gentleman. Irene Runnels was just terrific as a manager. Hyman Chiles was a salesman at that time and a good friend. I'll never forget the experience. Dave Tucker

Well, there's another thing we share besides a fondness for good ole Rock n' Roll Radio, because I premiered in Tyler, Texas on November 25 -- this year falling on Thanksgiving Day (as it does every 7 years or so). JAY WEST [Legendary KILT-610 DJ] (Houston-Richmond, TX) Good day Jim, I have not used "consolidated" email address for about 4 years. As I understand it, CONSOLIDATED is no longer in biz. Anyway, I moved about 4 1/2 years ago from Katy to Richmond in a subdivision known as LAKEMONT. Yes, destroy any of the old addresses to me as they are non-existent. The official new email address to me is: jayweststudio@gmail.com and now I have added your email also to my list. Hopefully this clears up the misunderstanding. Sorry. Jay West
