ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

THUNDER ROLLS AT THE EARLY SHOW The AP's David Bauder reports that ratings-challenged CBS TV Early Show anchors Harry Smith, Maggie Rodriguez and weatherman Dave Price are all on the chopping block. Weekend Early Show regulars Erica Hill and Chris Wragge are anxious to become the new main morning duo. Reportedly, Marysol Castro will ease into Price's weather spot. David Freidman, who joins the Early Show as executive producer 11 months ago, tells THR, Obviously if things were quote-unquote ‘working’ we wouldn’t make changes. The Early Show lies in third place behind NBC’s Today and ABC’s Good Morning America, welcomes new co-hosts Chris Wragge and Erica Hill, with Jeff Glor and Marysol Castro who join the show as news reader and weather anchor. In 2007, Rodriguez comes to the Early Show from CBS TV's Miami, FL O&O WFOR TV. Hill joins CBS TV earlier in 2010. Of course, we know that anchor Harry Smith is a CBS vet for years.

TEXAS NONCOM ADDS TRINITY FM
KTYR FM Trinity, TX goes to a new owner before it goes on the air. Roberto R. Villareal, head of Aleluya Christian Broadcasting, plops down $350K for Class C1 100 kW KTYR FM which is north of Houston, TX. But that top-five market is beyond the reach of KTYR FM's signal. Bill R. Wright, owner of KXVI Communications, says that ACBI will pay $15K for a down payment along with $160K cash at closing. The other half comes via a $175K promissory note. Aleluya owns four other Texas radio stations: Country KUZN FM (105.9) Centerville; Spanish KFTG FM (88.1) Pasadena; Country KBRZ-1460 Missouri City and Spanish KRTX-980 Rosenberg/Richmond.

MARTIN FILLS CTV ANCHOR SEAT Don Martin, columnist on Parliament Hill in Ottawa for the National Post and Calgary Herald newspapers, replaces Tom Clark, veteran CTV journalist who abruptly exits Power Play in summer 2010 after they pass over him to replace Lloyd Robertson as top network news anchor on CTV. Power Play is a daily political talk show on the CTV News Channel. On Tuesday, November 30th, 2010 Martin says: There was only one way to get me to give up a dream job as a newspaper columnist. That was to offer me a dream job as a CTV host. He beats out several CTV journalists for the anchor spot on Power Play which includes CTV's Question Period co-host Jane Taber, who is a recent stand-in on the political talk show during the search for Clark's replacement. This takes place as Canadian cable news continues its industry-wide turn-around. Evan Solomon replaces Don Newman who retires as host of CBC's daily politico show Power and Politics. Quebecor Media prepares to launch Sun TV News, which is a first-ever Canadian conservative news channel.

FRANK HALEY [Ex KLIF-1190 Newscaster] (Albuquerque, NM) Thanks Jim, just sent John (Bass) an e-mail. When was the last time you heard from him? He really is a wonderful talent. I worked for him in Tyler at KDOK (1330) when Bill Young was the PD there. Then John was in the news dept at KLIF (1190) when I showed up to work there. to you and your sweet puppy I now have a poodle mix and a Papillion. The poodle's name is Prince and he's the first dog I've ever had or that has really bonded to me. He is a wonderful little white dog. Sticks to me like glue. The Papillion is Alice's lap dog. They sleep in kennels next to our bed. No fuss no muss. The Haley's are fine. Hope you had a good Thanksgiving. Merry Christmas to you both. Frank

JOHN BASS [Former KLIF-1190 Newscaster] (Tyler, TX)
Hi Jim. Dick Mock and I worked together at KBOX (1480) in its heyday also. The funniest thing I remember about the time together we had at KLIF (1190) was...when I got off at 10AM on KLIF, Dick took over the newsroom. We had a file-card box with commercial intros for the newscasts. The one for the 11:00 AM broadcast for Dick was "Jack's Meat" in Dallas. So...I retyped the card for Dick's next newscast one morning. The card then read: "This edition of KLIF news brought to you by Jack's Meat. Remember...you just can't beat Jack's Meat". Dick read that line at 11:00 AM, and when he got to "you just can't beat".......he realized what it was saying & stopped reading, all choked up! He could not continue for about 20 seconds! It was SO funny! Next day when he came in at 10:45, he informed me that my funeral would be forthcoming the next day!!! John Bass

DON SUNDEEN [Ex DJ/record promotion] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Dick Glancey. Hi Jim, Passed on John Bass's request for info on Dick Glancey and he asked for John's email address. Dick's address is in the copy line in this email or you can have John contact me. You're doing the good work buddy, give Lacy a treat for me. Don Sundeen

DAVE TUCKER [Former KBOX-1480, KFJZ-1270, KXOL-1360 DJ] (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: Thoughts on KBOX. Jim, KBOX had a Gates console. Very simple board with speed potential. Two turntables with light switches on and off. They were mounted right at knee level. It was fast. I had a ball with the setup. We had just the right amount of reverb with a boom box on the floor. It was a pedal and you stepped on it for a huge amount of reverb. Used sparingly of course. One of the great pleasures at KBOX was listening to your fellow jocks. Being in the room with them as they did their shows. I'll never forget the experience. Dave Tucker

GENTLEMAN JIM CARTER [KNUS FM, KONO-860, KLIF-1190, WFAA-570 DJ] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: 1950's e-mail. Howdy back atcha Jim: I, too, loved listening to KBOX & KLIF. My fave jock was Bill Holly, (the night creature as he called himself). That guy could cram more tunes into an hour than any jock I ever heard. He used to brag about it. Those good old days are not gone forever for they will live on in my memories of growing up in the 50's in Dallas. Gentleman Jim Carter/San Antonio, Texas
