MIAMI TALK HOST TOO ILL WQAM-560's 68-year-old retired often-controversial South Florida Talk show host, Neil Rogers, suffers a heart attack and stroke. Doctors schedule him for open-heart surgery last week but instead move him to a hospice. Physicians determine that Neil is too ill to undergo the surgery. In summer 2009, Beasley buys out what is left of his contract. Rogers retires from FL radio and relocates to Toronto, Canada. Then he decides to return to South Florida for medical care. JRRR asks for prayers that Neil Rogers regains his strength, has a successful surgery and begins to enjoy his retirement.

HOWARD STERN'S RISE TO FAME This week, Howard Stern, who turns 57 in January 2011, works out a multi million dollar contract extension to remain on Sirius XM Satellite Radio for another five years. He joins Sirius satellite radio in 2006 for a five-year pact at $100 million each year. Howard's rise to fame and fortune begins way back in July 1979 when he becomes the morning DJ on WCCC FM (106.9) in Hartford, CT. In February 1980 Stern leaves WCCC because they refuse to give him a raise that he requests. On April 21, 1980 he begins a new morning show on WWWW FM (106.7) in Detroit, MI at $30,000 a year. After nine months he exits WWWW FM when it flips to Country music. On March 2, 1981 Stern starts his third morning show on WWDC FM (101.1) in Washington, D.C. at $40,000 a year. Also in March, Robin Quivers who is a News anchor and consumer reporter on WFBR-1300 in Baltimore, MA joins his morning show. In summer 1981 his audience on WWDC FM doubles from 2.6% to 5.2%. By 1982 his listener share grows to 8.0%. On June 29, 1982 Howard's contract with WWDC FM terminates. His co-host Robin flees to WCBM-680 in Baltimore, MA. On August 4, 1982 Stern steps up to the plate for his 4–8 pm airshift on WNBC-660 in America's largest radio market, New York City. Quivers rejoins Stern on October 18th. Howard makes TV guest appearances four times between May and October 1984 on Late Night with David Letterman on NBC which places him into the national spotlight for the first time. By spring 1985, Stern has the top afternoon show in NYC with a record 5.7% audience share which is WNBC-660's highest ranking since 1981 set by Don Imus. Stern takes WNBC-660's afternoon rank from #11 to 1st place in three years. But Stern's controversial approach to radio threatens WNBC-660's stellar corporate image. So on September 30, 1985 WNBC-660 cancels the Howard Stern show due to conceptual differences. On November 18, 1985 he signs on for afternoons 2–6pm on NYC's WXRK FM (92.3). In February 1986 Stern switches to the morning show 6–10am. On August 18, 1986 Stern's show goes national when it simulcasts on WYSP FM (94.1) in Philadelphia, PA. Howard remains on WXRK FM for about 20 years until his final terrestrial radio broadcast on December 16, 2005. Stern joins Sirius for $500 million in cash and stock. In 2006 Star Trek's George Takei's deep baritone voice becomes the show's official announcer.

JIM BELL [KUFH FM 88.7 Retired 1997-2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Politics update. Hi Jim, I'm a Conservative, but I think people like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity deserve a fair amount of blame for this. I've heard both say over and over that compromise is a betrayal of your principles, and they refuse to do either. Limbaugh says he can't stand moderates because a moderate is someone who doesn't know what he believes. Sadly, that's the attitude that's causing much of our political and social gridlock. There are millions of moderates in both parties who are willing to work out compromises on the issues that are now dividing us, but unfortunately, the people who represent them in Congress are in the minority. Jim Bell
DAVID FAULKNER (Dallas, TX) Subject: Jim Bell Issue 905. Greetings Jim & Lacy, Enjoyed reading Jim Bell's email about moderates & extremists in JRRR Issue 905. Amen! Well said! Take Care, David

JOHN or VICKY PICKERING (Houston, TX) Subject: Grammy nomination includes John Pickering's voice. John Pickering received word from Casey Monahans, Texas Music Office, Governor's Office that for the 2011 53rd Grammy's Award nomination the "Buddy Holly Not Fade Away - The Complete Studio Recordings and More" album has been nominated for Best Historical Album. The Picks (John and Bill Pickering and Bob Lapham) are singing backup vocals with Buddy Holly on nine of the songs including "Oh Boy" and "Maybe Baby". The original 1957 Brunswick LP "The Chirping Crickets" which contained 9 songs with The Picks voices listed them as "vocal group with orchestra". Vicky Pickering (www.buddyhollyandthepicks.com)
DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) KXOL (1360) had gone country when I was there and it was actually pretty good. But it was still AM radio in a time of FM expansion. I had worked through the Arbitron at KSCS (FM 96.3), as I promised them I would and I worked hard. I decided that KSCS was stuck at about #10 in the market, so I wanted to go to a station with more potential. WRONG. When the book came out, KSCS had gone to the top 5 in the market and KXOL tanked to almost nothing. I had kicked my own b***. (www.zoesplaceclinic.com) / (www.myspace.com/drjeffcunningham)

GENTLEMAN JIM CARTER (San Antonio, TX) Subject: 1950's e-mail. Jim: Growing up in south Oak Cliff in the 50's was a hoot! I recall many street drag races streets on Kiest Blvd. & other streets...you don't see much of that anymore. My favorite eatery in those days was the greasy spoon burger joint called the Top Hat. They had three locations that I can recall...one was near the Dallas Morning News, another at Main & Ervay & the other one on west Jefferson down from the Texas Theater. I was a member of the Oak Cliff YMCA for a couple of years when I was 11 & 12. Gentleman Jim Carter/San Antonio, Texas
