TV STATION RESCUES CALF A helicopter pilot for an Oklahoma City TV station rescues a calf that is stranded on an icy farm pond in northwest Oklahoma. On Monday morning, December 27, 2010 a rancher near Watonga puts in a call to KWTV TV CH9 after his calf gets stuck in the middle of an ice-covered farm tank. This is not the normal type of item to cross the news desk at KWTV TV but station helicopter Pilot Mason Dunn flies to the scene. He hovers over the lagoon and uses the wind from the rotor blades of his helicopter to push the calf toward the shoreline. Voila! The calf regains its footing on land. This is not a first for Dunn. It is the second time that he rescues a stranded animal. Three years ago he helps push a stranded deer to safety from the ice-covered Lake Thunderbird. JRRR sends up three cheers for KWTV TV helicopter Pilot Mason Dunn for going far and above his normal call of duty.

RADIO TALK HOST HEADS TO DC Taking a hint from Jimmy Stewart's 1939 film Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Crawford Broadcasting Talk KLZ-560 (The Source) Denver, CO morning host Jim Pfaff heads to America's Capital City as chief of staff for Congressman-elect Tim Huelskamp (R-KS). BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger] (Abilene, TX) Sent: Thursday, December 30, 2010 5:25 PM Subject: Our pal, Tommy. Jim: RE, your ref to Tommy Overstreet, Issue #912, 12/24. I had the pleasure of bringing Tommy Overstreet & his great band on stage at American Legion Park, Culpeper, VA at height of his recording career. I told him then that his band was the only one I've ever seen or heard to completely duplicate on stage the actual sound of the hit records. (The only pop artist I ever saw do this was the late Laura Brannigan.) Promo man Marvin Myrtle in Staunton, VA had told me previously that Tommy was now in Oregon, so I am pleased to see your mention. I would like to hear from him anytime. Meanwhile, may you & Lacy have a Happy & memorable New Year! BOB

CHARLES GEORGE (Dallas, TX) Subject: More bad news. Hi, I just saw that Dr. Billy Taylor passed away. I remember him from being the Music for David Frost. I have him backing Gerry Mulligan on an LP, Jeru. I am glad to see that you got your newsletter back up. However; if you took a break for the Holidays I think we would understand. You prove the difference between a sprinter and a long distance runner. I hope you do well in the New Year. My mother got a virus on her computer Christmas Day, Spy Guard. But she had it taken care of today and her computer is back up. I am trying to locate a song I liked to hear done by Jesse Lopez about California Girls but don't know the title. I always liked the tune but could never make out the correct words so just added mine when I heard it on the radio. I think he is the little brother of Trini Lopez. 73, Charles George

DAN MCCURDY (Sherman-Denison, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#912) December 24, 2010 [Friday] Jim...an the Fred Foy passing mention in JRRR #911..."We also hear his distinctive voice on The Green Hornet and Sgt. Preston of the Yukon radio series." The announcer who voiced Ralston Purina commercials and all 'announcing duties' for Sgt. Preston of the Yukon was, in actuality, recently retired Lloyd Moss, mainstay PM Drive air personality on NYC's classical WQXR-FM for a span of 50+ years. I had called Lloyd to congratulate him on his retirement and to thank him for featuring the 'Donna Diana Overture’ earlier on his show. This classical masterwork (a 3-act comic opera) by Emil von Reznicek, was the dramatic theme music for Sgt. Preston of the Yukon, the very favorite late-40s/early-50s radio thriller of an 8 year-old future DJ in Tyler, Texas. When I mentioned this bit of useless personal trivia to Lloyd, he told me with a chuckle, "Yep, that was a good radio show, I was the announcer for the good Sergeant and his great Husky, Yukon King." Astounded by the Lotto-like odds of the occasion, I said, "You did the Ralston Purina commercials?" "Sure did, and all the in-show announcer lines." Wow! Lloyd Moss had been my favorite on-air classical radio host for years, and now, he was more famous than ever to that, um, somewhat more seasoned 8 year-old. As long as we are Obamified, we are in danger. Have a Merry Christmas. I'm glad you had a good time at the awards dinner. I couldn't get Bruce to drive over and my wife had a fit when I said I would drive. So I stayed home. Gary D. (www.garydnews.com)
